Accommodation statistics

2020, March

Nights spent decreased by 48 per cent in March 2020

Due to the market situation caused by the coronavirus, the figures of the accommodation statistics for March are exceptionally released as a rapid estimate. Overnight stays by resident tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments declined by 46 per cent from last year and 0.70 million nights were recorded for them in March 2020. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 53 per cent and 0.26 million overnight stays were recorded for non-resident tourists. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 0.96 million overnight stays, which was 48 per cent lower than one year before. Forty-three per cent of the hotels having reported data for March said they had already closed before the end of the month. The closed hotels were open in March for 24 days, on average. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 36,100 nights. Their overnight stays were 57.8 per cent down on March 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 35,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was French with 30,500 overnight stays. The third largest group was Russians with 26,300 overnight stays, and fourth were Dutch tourists with 17,800 overnight stays.

Nights spent declined from 35 up to 66 per cent by region

Overnight stays declined in each region, but the smallest drop in relative terms was in Kainuu, where overnight stays declined by 35 per cent. By contrast, the overall number of overnight stays declined most in relative terms in Kanta-Häme, by 66 per cent.

Accommodation establishments in Uusimaa recorded 82,000 overnight stays by non-resident tourists and accommodation establishments in Lapland 117,000. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 59 per cent in Uusimaa. In Lapland, overnight stays by non-resident tourists declined by 47 per cent from one year ago. The share of Uusimaa in all overnight stays by foreign visitors was 31 per cent and that of Lapland 44 per cent.

Occupancy rate of hotel rooms decreased by 25 percentage points

The total number of nights spent in hotels was 0.77 million, which was 50 per cent less than twelve months earlier. Overnight stays by foreign tourists declined by 53 per cent and hotels recorded a total of 230,000 overnight stays for them. Recorded nights spent by resident tourists in hotels numbered 0.54 million. The number was 49 per cent lower than in March 2019.

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in Kainuu, 45.5 per cent, and in Lapland, 42.5 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 29.6 per cent, 29.1 per cent in Tampere and 34.8 per cent in Turku.

In March 2020, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 113.95 per day for the whole country.

Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 110.85. There was a total of 54,190 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 208 more than in March 2019.

Hotel room occupancy rate and the monthly average price

Total number of nights spent decreased by 13 per cent in January to March 2020

In January to March 2020, a total of 4.48 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation

establishments. This was 13.0 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 2.89 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 1.59 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists declined by 12.3 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 14.1 from the previous year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. Overnight stays by them declined by 2 200 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Chinese tourists, down by 36,000 nights. Their overnight stays were 34 per cent down on January to March 2019.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Russians with 242,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 152,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was French with 146,000 overnight stays , and fourth were Britons with 141,000 overnight stays.
