Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Do small shock absorbers of Optima and Flash negatively

impact the vehicle?

A Shock absorbers are related to the suspension of an

e-bike. Suspension is complicated and not entirely defined by the length of shock absorbers. The impact on the vehicle depends on the materials such as spray, damping material etc. that are put inside the suspension. Our suspension systems for Optima, Flash and other vehicles maintain sufficient clearance from the ground, absorb the shock adequately and are reliable.

Q2. Why don’t we offer many gadgets and accessories like competition?

A Adding gadgets and accessories is an external and easy task,

which we can do any time. But, we do not want to increase unnecessary costs in the vehicle. Our focus is to increase the performance and efficiency of the vehicle by implementing detailed changes its powertrain, battery, motor, charger, electronic system etc. which are the heart and soul of the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q3. Why don’t we offer a top speed of 70km/h like competition?

A The engine of an e-bike outperforms other IC engines in their

top speeds, acceleration, pickup etc. Therefore, offering speed in an e-bike is not a limitation of technology but depends on its design and features. Every e-bike has a green zone (green mark on the speedometer), guaranteeing its optimum performance. Driving above it adversely impacts the maintenance, range, vibration, heat etc. From our experience, the green zone in e- bikes lies between 40-50 km/h, and ensures the best output w.r.t input. Increasing the speed of an e-vehicle is easy, but it increases the size and cost of the battery by 1.5 - 2 times. Our vehicles are the ideal budget city vehicles that deliver best performance.

Q4. Why don’t we offer a range of 150-200 km like competition?

A A lot of claims of extremely high range in e-vehicles are a

result of twisted figures and facts that are also evident in petrol and diesel vehicles. Generally, if the speed of the vehicle increases, its range decreases. Several brands twist this relation by getting their speed and range measured separately. Therefore, the actual range of the vehicle delivered varies from the sample vehicle used for testing. HE bikes do not make such false claims and stand up to their practical rang

Frequently Asked Questions

Q5. Why don’t we offer both front and rear disk brakes like competition?

A There’s a misunderstanding that disk brakes are better than

drum brakes. The braking system depends on the requirements of the vehicle and factors like its weight, speed, aerodynamics etc. Low maintenance is the priority for an e-bike. They do not run on high speeds or have very short stopping, which is why they do not need such complex braking systems. Adding more disk brakes also increases the maintenance concerning its fluid, disk warping, sludge accumulation etc. HE vehicles have an optimized design whose braking systems are the best suited for an e-bike.

Q6. Why don’t our e-bikes offer Lithium Ion Phosphate batteries like competition?

A Lithium Ion Phosphate batteries in e-bikes are being used by

manufacturers since last year. However, these batteries haven been banned in China and Chinese manufacturers are dumping them at low costs. Manufacturers with no long term goals are buying these batteries that have no follow up technology. Phosphate in batteries is not suitable for the automotive grade vehicles because of its weight, energy to density ratio, decreased acceleration and current drawing possibilities. HE has tested all kinds of cells and is using the technology, not being used by competition right now. HE builds reliable products with long term goals, and thus offer a 3 year comprehensive warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q7. Why should you buy an e-bike when petrol bikes are cheaper

and have no range anxiety?

A If we compare an e-bike and a petrol bike over 3-5 years, the

difference Is clear. For example, if your petrol scooter consumes 1L petrol daily for 3 years, the total cost incurred will be INR 80,000 – 90,000. When you drive a HE bike, the petrol in terms of the battery is free for the 3 years due to HE’s comprehensive warranty. Its charging cost for three years would be INR 13,000- 14,000 for 1200-1300 units of electricity. But, this cost of the customer is saved due to an e-bike’s low maintenance. Therefore, at the end of 3 years, customer saves around INR 1 lakh with an eco-friendly e-bike.

Q8. Why should you buy an e-bike when a petrol scooter has more resale value?

A E-bikes had a low resale value because of their lead batteries.

With Lithium Ion batteries, the resale value of an electric scooter is same as a petrol scooter, since the battery life is increased. The resale value of an electric scooter today depends upon the life of the battery in it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q9. What are our recycling practices?

A Best recycling practices are carried out at HE. At the

manufacturing level, our facilities are clean, tidy and efficient for handling affluents and recycling spare parts or scraps such as steel and plastic. The water discharged at our toilets goes straight to horticulture. Similarly, we have sustainable practices for recycling batteries. Since Lithium Ion has not completed its 15 years cycle yet, the recycling process is already designed, which will be implemented upon cycle completion. For lead batteries, HE follow every practice as per the government norms.

Q10. How is an e-bike green when the power generation creates pollution?

A In India 60% of the electricity is thermally generated. Studies

show that the net pollution also called the ‘well to veil’ of an e- bike is 0. The pollution for a petrol vehicle begins as crude oil reaches India, is consumed by the vehicle and creates exhaust. For an e-bike the pollution begins as the coal is put in the thermal boiler and the power is consumed by the e-vehicle. Upon comparing these, HE bikes consume 75% less energy in spite of the power generation. Consumption of 1L petrol creates 2.4 Kg of greenhouse gases, which is nil for an e-bike, just like its on-road emission. Even at the backend, the power plants are located far apart, contributing to controlled ambient pollution. However, new techniques like electrostatic precipitation, coal wash, use of high calorific value coal etc. are being used in power plants to minimize ambient pollution. With this, India is increasing its contribution of renewable energy by 3-4% every year. Soon, with solar power utilization, an electric vehicle will have a complete end to end green chain.

(7)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q11. What are the emission savings made by our e-bikes?

A Using the thumb rule indicator on our website, the emission

savings can be calculated easily. You are required to enter the daily kms travelled and the years for which the vehicle has been driven. The calculator will give the crude oil and greenhouse savings made during the period. For example, if you drive an electric scooter 60 kms daily for 10 years, the emission savings made will be equal to planting 30-34 full grown trees. In the case of petrol vehicles, this is the opposite.

Q12. How efficient is an e-bike on slopes and flyovers?

A There is no suitable e-bike in the budget price range right now

that is fit and efficient for driving on slopes or hilly areas. However, HE is developing an electric scooter for driving on slopes. But, its initial cost and running cost might not lie in the economy range. All HE e-bikes are currently certified for driving at a 7 degree slope, while most of the flyovers in India are only 4 degree inclined. Therefore, a customer gets an economy bike with maximum efficiency. Adding any accessories to the bike would mean reducing its efficiency and increasing the power intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q13. What is the after warranty cost impact on our e-bike?

A With a 3 year comprehensive warranty on an e-bike, a

customer gets 3 year worth free petrol. The maintenance costs for an e-bike are lesser than half as compared to a petrol vehicle. So, an e-bike user saves money on petrol and also earns a little extra due to no maintenance costs. In comparison to an average consumption of 1L petrol daily, the savings for an e-bike user for 3 years is INR 1 lakh. If driven in the economy zone, the battery of e-bikes last 4-5 years. Depending upon the model its cost may range between 20,000-25,000, which is a fraction of the savings made in the first three years. Moreover, the price of the lithium ion batteries are reducing every year, with 15% In the past year itself. Buying an electric vehicle means saving for a lifetime.

Q14. Why don’t we provide a fast charger that can reduce the charging time to 2 hours, like competition?

A Fast charger is an accessory that was introduced by HE but

later withdrawn due to its negative impact on the life and efficiency of the battery. We have already put the best charging curve in our vehicle and do not recommend fast charging. Fast charging impacts the reliability, predictability and life of the battery in the long run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q15. Why don’t we have an ABS safety feature in our e-bikes?

A One of the most important requirements of an electric vehicle

is simplicity and low maintenance that comes with its fewer parts. In the ranges of speed that Hero electric vehicles provide, the most important features are simplicity and reliability. Features like ABS are mostly needed in high speed cars, and as soon as it is added in a vehicle, the maintenance cost goes up. Since HE has defined bikes as low maintenance, they stand up to it.

Q16. Why don’t we have a walk assist or reverse gear feature in our e-bikes?

A Walk assist is an additional feature that helps in driving a

vehicle at a fixed particular acceleration when you’re not sitting on the bike. However, these are only additional features and not practically used in many situations. HE bikes can be perfectly carried by keeping a constant throttle even when the tires are punctured. The only difference is that a walk assist can be used with one hand, while our bikes require two hands to run them during walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q17. How many controllers do our e-bikes have and are they

better than the competition?

A HE bikes have 12 MOSFET controllers. These controllers are

never judged based on their count, but by their capacity, specification and sourcing of MOSFET. Upon examining several electric vehicles in the market, we discovered that there is no trademark on many competition MOSFET controllers. Thus, you cannot guess their quality, consistency or reliability. Our quality control process is one of the most important factors, which is why the appropriate design cycle is maintained in vehicles.

Q18. Why don’t we offer a mono-shock suspension like competition?

A Using the kind of suspension depends on the design of the

vehicle. It doesn’t really matter whether single or double suspension is used. Generally, a suspension support system from two sides helps in balancing the load better. In a single suspension support system the load is shifted on the cantilever. Having a mono shock system doesn’t have any added advantage apart from space utilization. Double shockers compensate for the shock coming in from both the sides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q19. Why can’t our e-bikes charge 80% in one hour, like

competition?

A Fast charging is a good option for electric cars where the

battery is much larger. They have a reserve of power with a large size and magnitude. For example, Tesla’s chargers can charge their cars up to 60% in 15-20 minutes. It is effective for their models because they have a sophisticated charger that runs on controlled voltages. It is not viable for an electric scooter as it negatively impacts the bike’s battery life and efficiency. Therefore, HE does not recommend it.

Q20. Why don’t we offer a coil spring suspension system, like competition?

A Every suspension will have some kind of spring in their coil.

This can be a leaf spring, coil spring or torque spring. It is ultimately a design feature. Our bikes have a coil spring , which is just covered. While the coil spring suspensions of competition bikes are exposed in their models. The most important attribute of a suspension‘s spring is its ‘k factor’, which comes from its metallurgy. Over time, if the metallurgy of the spring is not right, it impacts the vehicle adversely.
