Dear Friends, The parish office will be closed on Monday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please note that that there will be only one Mass on Monday to com-memorate the event.

Please join us for the 9:00 am Mass on Monday, January 17. Have a great week!

Father John Dolan

The front page shows a portion of Leonardo Davinci’s

notebook drawings. The fetus and womb, ca.1510, helps

us reflect on the powerful words from today’s 1st

Read-ing:

“Now, the Lord has spoken who formed me as his servant from

the womb.” Isaiah 49:5

Sometimes we forget that from the moment we were

con-ceived, God had a plan for us. We were all fashioned in

our mother’s womb - uniquely designed - for a purpose!

Next Saturday morning, January 22nd, at the 7:30 am

Mass, a special Mass will be celebrated in honor the most

vulnerable servants of God.

In all the dioceses of the United States of America, January 22

shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations

to the dignity of the human person committed through acts

of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal

guarantee of the right to life. The Mass “For Peace and Justice”

(no. 22 of the “Masses for Various Needs”) should be celebrated

with violet vestments as an appropriate liturgical observance

for this day.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

The Knights of Columbus made a pledge last week for $25,000 to be paid over the next seven years. The parish of St. Rose of Lima is proud to have such a great fra-ternity.

In a short while, Father John will be meet-ing with members of the various groups and ministries to ask them what kind of support he can expect from them.

Already, many groups have expressed in-terest in making some pledge toward the new parish hall.

For individual pledges, material with pledge cards and return envelopes can be found you may find at the doors of our church.

Thank you in advance for your willing-ness to help raise needed funds for the new parish hall!

Understanding that “many hands make light work,” all parishioners are encour-aged to make some form of sacrifice to-ward the new project.

If you wish to see how much has been raised, you are invited to visit the parish website. Simply go to strosecv.com and click on the campaign button - “Thy King-dom Come!” There you will see updates on the campaign; including how much has been pledged so far.

As of the printing of this bulletin (we go to the printers on Mondays), the number of pledges received is:

191

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

The Lord has entrusted the building up of His

Kingdom to His Church. We are the Church

and we all have a hand in promoting His

King-ly mission. I invite you to be generous in your

gift of prayer and financial sacrifice as we

be-gin the next step to complete our building

projects with a new parish hall.

Our campaign is to raise $3 Million in seven

years. You may wish to make an extended

seven year pledge for $2,000, $5,000, $10,000,

$25,000 or more. Below, you will find a pledge

card with options to fulfill your pledge monthly,

quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. Please

consider them carefully and select the one

that fits your family’s financial situation.

Not everyone can make the same size gift!

However, everyone can make some sacrifice!

Imagine what we could do - with a parish the

size of nearly 6,000 families - if everyone would

make some pledge toward the campaign.

Please visit our website or call 427-0230 for

in-formation on how you can make a pledge.

My Pledge to

“Thy Kingdom Come”

this is a pledge of $__________________to be billed over seven years. I ask to

be billed for the pledge over the following payments:

On the Fundamental Right to life

Pope benedict Xvi:

God’s love does not differentiate between the newly conceived in-fant still in his or her mother’s womb and the child or young per-son, or the adult and the elderly person. God does not distinguish between them because he sees an impression of his own image and likeness (Gn 1:26) in each one.1

[L]ife is the first good received from God and is fundamental to all others; to guarantee the right to life for all and in an equal manner for all is the duty upon which the future of humanity depends.2

U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops:

[T]he failure to protect and defend life in its most vulnerable stages renders suspect any claims to the ‘rightness’ of positions in other matters affecting the poorest and least powerful of the human com-munity. If we understand the human person as the “temple of the Holy Spirit” – the living house of God – then these latter issues fall logically into place as the crossbeams and walls of that house. All direct attacks on innocent human life, such as abortion and eutha-nasia, strike at the house’s foundation. These directly and immedi-ately violate the human person’s most fundamental right – the right to life. Neglect of these issues is the equivalent of building our house on sand. Such attacks cannot help but lull the social conscience in ways ultimately destructive of other human rights.3

Abortion

Pope benedict Xvi:

Children truly are the family’s greatest treasure and most precious good. Consequently, everyone must be helped to become aware of the intrinsic evil of the crime of abortion. In attacking human life in its very first stages, it is also an aggression against society itself. Poli-ticians and legislators, therefore, as servants of the common good, are duty bound to defend the fundamental right to life, the fruit of God’s love.4

As far as the right to life is concerned, we must denounce its wide-spread violation in our society.... Abortion and embryonic experi-mentation constitute a direct denial of that attitude of acceptance of others which is indispensable for establishing lasting relationships of peace.5

[E]ven in the most difficult circumstances human freedom is capa-ble of extraordinary acts of sacrifice and solidarity to welcome the life of a new human being.6

U.S. Conference of Catholic bishops:

Among important issues involving the dignity of human life with which the Church is concerned, abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent human being, is al-ways gravely immoral (The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family.

With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relation-ship with Jesus. Israel’s relationrelation-ship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2).

The Greeting

At several points during the liturgy, the presider greets us with the words, “The Lord be with you.” These simple words are not like the greetings that we exchange all day long—our “good mornings,” our “hellos” and “how are yous.” This liturgical greeting has roots deep in the Old Testament. In the book of Ruth, the words “the Lord be with you” are spoken by Boaz to the harvesters who are labor-ing in his fields (2:4); in the book of Judges, an angel speaks similar words to Gideon (6:12), where they are words of promise: for soon Gideon will lead his oppressed people to victory and freedom. For us, the words become a greeting of peace, a prayer that the Lord will indeed be with us, and a reminder of his promise to be with us always, to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20). Our response— “And also with you,” soon to be “And with your spirit”—returns to the presider this prayer for the Lord’s presence. As we know from the scriptures, a prayer for the Lord’s presence is no small thing, for when God comes in our midst, God brings healing, grace, and chal-lenge. God’s presence transforms us.

Estimados Amigos,

La meta de nuestra campaña “Venganos Tu

en siete años. Para cumplir esta meta

esta-mos siendo llamados a sacrificar lo más que

podamos, dentro de nuestra capacidad
