(2) WATERTOWN CATHOLIC COLLABORATIVE, FEBRUARY 21ST, 2021. PASTORAL MESSAGE Joyce Rupp, a Catholic nun and writer says “Seeds of the future plant themselves in our hearts every day. We are unaware of their presence until some significant life experience awakens them and invites us to grow.” These words can be helpful during our Lenten journey, knowing what begins now, the seeds planted so to speak, can take root in many ways not just during Lent but throughout our lives. These words begin her book Walk in a Relaxed Manner where she shares her experiences walking the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The Camino is a pilgrim route, approximately 600 miles that begins in France, meanders through the Basque region of Spain and ends at Cathedral of St. James in Compostela where it is believed the Apostle’s remains are interred. There are lots of stories about the Camino, both fiction and nonfiction. One that is popular is the movie The Way, starring Martin Sheen and written and produced by his son Emilio Estevez. It tells the story of Dr. Thomas Avery, an ophthalmologist who is rather ordered and rigid. His son Daniel is exploring life. The two are not exactly estranged, but are opposite personalities, so the relationship is a bit tense. Daniel decides to walk the Camino but dies while traveling through the Pyrenees mountains. Thomas has to go to claim his body and decides to finish the route as a way to both honor and mourn his son. The route the Camino follows dates to the Middle Ages. People who travel the Camino do so for different reasons. For some, the journey may be solitary, but they are also walking with fellow pilgrims from all over the world so there is a sense of solidarity. There are as many reasons to walk as there are pilgrims. Sr. Joyce whose quote opened this column did so to celebrate her sixtieth birthday, her walking companion Fr. Tom was celebrating his retirement. Luke Larson, author of Keeping Company with St. Ignatius made the journey with his wife Evie. The two were empty nesters and the journey was a way of discerning the next chapter in their lives. Perhaps the most gripping tale of a Camino journey I have read is Redemption Road by Fr. Brendan McManus, SJ. Fr. McManus is a Jesuit priest who traveled the Camino after the harrowing loss of his brother to suicide. The Camino offered him the opportunity to not only come to terms with his loss but also led him to begin a new ministry to people grieving the loss of loved ones. For Catholics, the experience can often be an extended retreat. The alone time can often evoke a sense of closeness to God, especially when seeing the majestic views of the mountains, the crashing of ocean waves, or the simple beauty of wildflowers. The arduous portions of the journey can be a reminder of the pain and suffering of life. Putting one foot in front of the other and walking can be a reminder of following Jesus. For most people who travel the Camino, with perhaps the exception of Martin Sheen’s character Thomas Avery, the journey does not begin by putting one foot in front of the other either in France, or perhaps one of the other routes that begins in Portugal or Italy, it begins by answering the call to walk the route, whether it is after reading about it, hearing of someone’s journey, or stumbling upon it in a travel brochure. Then for about a year, pilgrims are in training and begin walking, first on paved roads, then perhaps hiking in rougher terrain. It may be a mile or two a day, then it increases to a few walks a week that are at least five or ten miles. Next pilgrims have to begin to buy what they will need for the journey such as sturdy hiking boots, a backpack, a sleeping bag, then they have to practice walking long distances with the backpack on, preferably in hot weather. Pilgrims also need to learn about the route and of course, since it is a pilgrimage, they need prayer to truly prepare for the journey. Then pilgrims take the first step along the Camino, the only guide being signs with yellow arrows and scallop shells that point in the right direction. Most hope for hospitable and friendly strangers who will guide them on the way, and finally and most importantly, God’s grace, the true guide along the journey. For many of the pilgrims, the Camino can represent life with its joys, sorrows, challenges, and simply mundane moments. The preparation gets pilgrims ready for the journey. This could be a good way to think about the Lenten season. We can approach the Lenten season as a forty day endurance exercise where we fast, pray, and draw closer to Jesus, and that is fine. We can also see it in a fuller way as preparation for life. During Lent we often give something up, self-denial so to speak. In life, we often deny ourselves of things. Lent reminds us of the call to be generous when we reflect on almsgiving, yet the call to be generous is not just a Lenten obligation. Christ knocks at our door in all sorts of ways both during Lent and outside the Lenten season. During Lent we are called to seek forgiveness and to forgive others in a concentrated way, but the need for forgiveness and the act of forgiving others is not just a Lenten act. It is great to pray more during Lent and read more scripture, it is even better if it becomes a new habit. As Lent concludes we enter into the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, yet some years during Lent we may not feel we are carrying a cross, yet at some point a loss of a loved one, an unexpected diagnosis, or some other challenge will be something we face. Lent is a blessed time and if we approach it as forty day of self-discipline, self-discipline we are doing for the Lord, that is wonderful. However, Lent can be more enriching when we see it almost as a spiritual training session or maybe even boot camp so to speak, where we not only enter into the forty days but see it as a preparation for something greater, following Jesus Christ each and every day. Fr. Tim Kearney.
