Using Basecamp
Basecamp is an online project management tool to help keep track of project discussions, files, and events.
Logging into Basecamp
To login to Basecamp visit: http://basecamp.com/ and click on Log in.
Basecamp Interface
In the Basecamp interface you will see the following:
1. Your Name with a My Info Link to add your contact information to this account (not required) and the Sign Out link.
2. Calendar display is a quick 2 week calendar view of events or tasks from the current date. 3. In the right panel is a list of all Your Projects you are involved in.
4. Groups displays each individual group with files shared with each group. (i.e. PDF's, Documents, Excel Files, etc.)
Working within your Project (ERP Initiative Overview)
Click on your project link, such as the ERP Initiative - Overview, under the Your Project panel to view that project group. There are various items you may use within your project:
1. The Overview tab will display a two week calendar view from the current date, with a link to "View the full calendar."
2. The Messages tab will allow you to send messages to group members. 3. The To-Dos tab will allow you to create and assing to-dos to group members. 4. The Calendar tab will display a full view of the calendar with events listed.
5. The Writeboards tab will allow you to create a writeboard for online discussion and collaboration.
6. The Files tab will allow you to upload and share files with the group members.
7. The People tab will allow you to view all the people assigned or involved in this project. 8. The Search tab will allow you to search for any key terms or words and filter by messages,
comments, to-dos, files, or milestones and events.
9. The links will allow you a quick way to create new messages, new to-do-list items, new events, or new files.
10. The Turn on email updates will give you the option to receive a daily digest notiying you of any to-do items or milestones that were added or completed in the last day.
11. The Project RSS feed will let you stay up to date on new messages, completed to-dos, file uploads and mor in your RSS newsreader of choice.
12. People in this project lists all the people involved in the project.
Posting a New Message
There are two ways to post a message:
1. Click on the Post a new message button. This will allow you to create a message title, set a category, write a message, and attach any files. You may also subscribe people to recieve the email notifications. (The people you select will get an email when you post this message. They'll also be notified by email every time a comment is added.)
Creating a New To-Do List and Adding an Item
1. To creat a new to-do list, click on the New to-do list button. This will allow you to first give the list a name, (e.g. "Set-up for the meeting") Then you may provide a list description or add notes about the list.
In the Enter a to-do item text box you may enter an item and then select Who's responsible for the item and set When is it due?.
Adding a New Event or Milestone to the Calendar
Under the Calendar tab there is the option to add a new event. Just click on the Add a new event button.
Next, add the event title and set when the event will take place with the set time. Set the event in the "This is" section as an event or a milestone. Finally, click on Add this event.
Adding Milestones in Bulk
To add milestones in bulk. Click on the "add milestones in bulk" link next to the Add an event title. This will allow you to add up to 10 new milestones with the due dates and the party who is
Creating a Writeboard
Under the Writeboards tab click on the Create the first writeboard button. This will allow you to name the writeboard.
Writeboards allow group members to be able to make collaborative writing easy. There are options to track changes, make corrections, review multiple versions of a document, and write without overwriting someone else.
This will give you the option to choose a file to upload by browsing your computer for the file. Then you may select the people you may want to notify by email that this file has been uploaded. Then select the "Upload the file" button once you are done.
