The mission of the Centre is to achieve the ultimate aim of health promotion and disease prevention through education and research in sports medicine.

OLLABORATING ORGANIZATIONS

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre

The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have jointly established The Hong Kong Jockey Club Sports Medicine and Health Sciences Centre in August 2007 with the generous donation of HK$88.72 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust . The Centre seeks to develop new services that are in high demand by the community at large and elite sports groups in the designated domains, as well as to provide valuable research evidence on the effectiveness of different sports injury management and performance enhancement modalities.

Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM)

The Asian Federation of Sports Medicine was inaugurated in 1990 at the time of the 11th Asian Games in Beijing. It is one

of the multi-national continental federations under the agist of the International Federation of Sports Medicine. The main objective of the AFSM is to foster the promotion of sports medicine in Asia.

ACKGROUND & MISSION

The postgraduate programmes are designed to provide advanced academic training to sports medicine professionals, especially medical doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, sports scientists and allied healthcare professionals who strive to acquire the latest advanced knowledge and leading-edge skills in order to stay ahead professionally in the field of sports and exercise medicine.

By providing advanced theory, knowledge combined with latest advanced hands on clinical practices for sports and exercise medicine, these programmes are tailored to offer a foundation for future leaders in the field of sports and exercise medicine either in clinical research or professional practice.

Sport injuries and their prevention and treatment will form the cornerstone of the course. However, the course will also cover a wide range of related medical topics and provide a platform in relevant areas of biomechanics, physiology and psychology.

The postgraduate programmes will also draw international contribution as it targets to develop a world-wide reputation education programme in Sports Medicine and Health Science. International contributors includes: International Federation

of Sports Medicine (FIMS), Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM), Harvard Medical School, University of Cape Town, and The Sheffield Centre of Sports Medicine.

ROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

Objectives:

a. To provide students with advanced knowledge and skills in the specialized area of sports medicine and health science, which aims to strengthen their professional knowledge and improve their professional competence; b. To introduce students the currently available diagnostic and assessment tools as well as therapeutic options in

the management of sports injuries. Students will be able to acquire comprehensive understanding of sports and soft tissue injuries, their causes, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation;

c. To provide students with the skills in evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, motivating athletes / individuals to modify negative health habits, and maintaining healthy lifestyle;

d. To create an environment for networking and experience sharing among the professionals from different allied health disciplines to enhance interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration;

e. To learn and exchange knowledge with overseas professionals.

EACHING METHODS

The teaching methods consist of lectures, practical workshops, clinical attachments, group discussions, case studies, seminars, tutorials, courses or conferences organized by reputable local or international sports medicine and health science related organizations, . Instructors will choose the right mix of course materials and teaching methods for the best teaching results.

ARGET STUDENTS

The programmes are targeted at allied healthcare professionals. Priority will be given to medical doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, sports scientists and other allied healthcare professionals.

SSESSMENT

Assessment methods include individual assignments, group assignments, attendance and examinations.

The programmes are supported by a network of highly qualified and experienced professionals in the field of sports medicine. Courses will be taught by the teaching staff from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Furthermore, external guest speakers from other tertiary institutions or visiting scholars may be invited to teach on appropriate topics.

B. MSc in Sports Medicine and Health Science (Full-Time / Part -Time)

The Master programme is offered as a 2-year part-time or 1-year intensive full-time degree. Other than completing the courses same as the PgDip prograames, MSc students are required to conduct a research project, attend clinical attachments and courses or conferences launched by reputable local and international sports medicine and health science related organizations.

Study Modes

To be eligible for the award, students should take modules including a dissertation giving a total of 30 credit units. Maximum study period is 3-year (full-time) / 4-year (part-time).

ROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The programmes prepare students to obtain a higher qualification in sports and health medicine which consists of two parts:

A. PgDip in Sports Medicine and Health Science (Part -Time)

The Postgraduate Diploma Programme is offered as a part-time programme with one year coursework.

On the satisfactory completion of the Postgraduate Diploma, students may proceed to the Master Programme. Credits earned are transferable and equivalent to those earned in the first year of the Master of Science Programme in Sports Medicine and Health Science, provided that they meet the academic requirements set by Graduate School.

Postgraduate Diploma will also be awarded to MSc students who fail to complete the Master programme but finish the first year coursework study (15 credit units) and fulfill the Postgraduate Diploma graduation requirements.

Study Modes

To be eligible for the award, a student shall complete 15 credit units in one year. Maximum study period is 2-year.

Full-time mode of programme is offered subject to the number of applicants.

(Extension beyond the study period may be endorsed under special circumstances with the prior approval from both the Dean of Graduate School and the Programme Director. However, the credits are transferable with a validation period of up to 3 years after graduation from the programme.)

This course aims to provide in-depth explorations of topics in the area of sports medicine by invited guest speaker. Students can gain specialised knowledge from this seminar to design, refine their research ideas.

ORT 0 Research Project and Writing up of Thesis

This course will require students to perform an independent research project in an area of interest within Sports Medicine and Health Science under the supervision of a faculty member. Students are also required to review the literature of their fields of interest and write up a report to form the master thesis.

ORT 0 Clinical Sports Medicine

To further widen the exposure of students and enable them to apply knowledge and skills they learnt from previous courses, this course is designed to provide students with the valuable opportunities of clinical attachment, under the supervision of experienced doctors with expertise in sports medicine. Moreover, students will have the chances to attend relevant educational courses launched by reputable regional and international sports medicine and sports science related organizations. To be more flexible, students are allowed to choose their preferred timeslots from the list of available options for attachment and courses. Students are also required to complete course assignments or other forms of assessment.

Accreditation

Both MSc and PgDip in Sports Medicine and Health Science have been included in the Medical Council of Hong Kong’s List of Quotable Qualifications since December in 2006.

DMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Potential candidates should be graduates from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor degree with a major in medicine, physiotherapy, nursing, exercise science or other allied health or sport - related disciplines.

All candidates must meet the general admission requirements of the University Graduate School. The minimum admission requirements are as follow

Master of Science Programme:

Graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or

Graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than “B” in undergraduate course; or

Completed a course if study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.

Postgraduate Diploma Programme:

Candidates should possess a university degree (or equivalent), and should preferably working in allied health or sport - related areas.

Applicants should have satisfactory scores in TOEFL if they are non-local graduates of universities from non - English speaking countries. A personal interview may be required. Past academic records, work experiences, reference letters will be considered in the admission decision.
