“Guide Us To Thy Perfect Light”

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Jesus came for everyone. Every human being is a child of God. This insight or epiphany is what we celebrate today. It also expresses our hope that one day every nation on earth will recognize and adore Jesus Christ.
Jesus' message of peace, justice, reconciliation and love are meant for everyone to hear and understand.

"Then, they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh." What a wonderful
example the Magi give us in their visit to the infant Jesus. First of all, they demonstrate profound faith in
God's word, spoken through the prophet Micah: "And you, Bethlehem….from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel" (cf. 5:2). Embarking on a long and difficult journey, they trust that they will find
this newborn king of the Jews in Bethlehem as the prophecy announced. On their arrival at the home of
the Holy Family, the Magi also give us an example of profound humility. These important men, to whom
kings look for guidance and advice, do not hesitate to bow down, to "prostrate themselves" and give homage to a tiny babe. Putting their own position out of their minds, they reverently worship the infant Lord even as he sits on the lap of his mother. The generosity of these three "kings" is also evident as they open their treasure
boxes and give to the poor child the richest of gifts.
Traditionally, we understand the gold to symbolize the earthly kingship of Christ, the frankincense to represent his divinity, and the myrrh to stand as a symbol of the
anointing he will receive upon his death. Finally, the wisdom of these men is evident in their decision to re-
turn to their country "by another way." Understanding the threat that King Herod posed to Jesus, they followed a plan that would help keep the divine child safe even
though it meant inconvenience to themselves. Faith, humility, generosity, and wisdom. These gifts are the
real legacy of the Three Kings. Today, let us ask God for the blessing of having these gifts in our lives.

Eucharistic Adoration
With the new year, many of us take the time to look back and reflect on the events of the past year. In turn, we may try to find ways to make amends in the new year and improve our lives. It is definitely a time of reflection and self analysis. When Christ left us with the Eucharist, it is a gift that offers us a chance to be one with Him and allow Him to be a part of us. By spending time with the Eucharist in Adoration, we are in some ways taking the opportunity to open our hearts to ourselves and put a mirror on our soul so to speak. There, we pray to Jesus to come closer to our lives and ask Him for guidance on how to improve and become a better person. A New Year wish for you is an
invitation to come spend time with the Eucharist. He is waiting for you. Please
consider finding time to make a regular obligation to sit with Christ.
There is always a need for faithful adorers for Eucharistic Adoration.

May the Light of Jesus Shine on You All Year Long.
Today is the feast of the Epiphany, when the Wise Men from the East visited Jesus
after a long journey. Our R.C.I.A.
catechumens and candidates will also continue on their way to receiving the sacraments. We have a new member, Shayla Lopez; her brother and sister are alumni of last year’s class. Tomorrow is the feast of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. This marks the
end of the Christmas season. During January, we will be studying the individual
sacraments and teachings of the Roman
Catholic Church. We too are seeking closeness to God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Holy Spirit. Pray for us as we journey to the full initiation into the
sacraments on March 31st and April 15th.

“ C hristmas in the H oly L and” P ilgrimage
A group of 45 people journeyed to the Holy Land from November 28th to December 7th. The pilgrims visited the sites where Jesus walked. The group
celebrated Mass at Jesus’ place of birth and burial, at Cana where Jesus performed his first miracle in John’s gospel and swam in the Dead Sea.
They also dined at the homes of Christian families who live in Jerusalem, learning their stories of faith in the Middle East.
The first Christian pilgrims went to the Holy Land seeking to verify this proclamation, to see and touch the places where God was born of woman, walked among men, died at our hands, and rose in glory. Those who could not make that long journey did the next best thing.
Pilgrims inside the Church of the Annunciation in Bethlehem
The Evangelist John professes: "What was from the beginning,/ what we have heard,/ what we have seen with our eyes,/ what we have looked upon/ and touched
with our hands/ concerns the Word of Life (1 Jn 1:1).
John proclaims a life made visible, a Word that became flesh, a God who dwelt among us (cf. Jn 1:14) Joyce Traina and
Pat Fisher, parishioners of Saint Mary Nativity, made the journey to the Holy Land with your
prayer petitions.
