In the night of June 26, 1977, sometime between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. a brutal double mur-der was committed in Duluth.

After climbing into the house through a billiard room window, the mur-derer smothered 83 year old Elizabeth Congdon in her sleep with a pil-low and, while attempt-ing escape, ran into the night nurse, Velma Pie-tila, whom they threw down a flight of stairs and bludgeoned to death with a candle stick. While this is chilling enough in itself, even

worse is the fact that no one knows who commit-ted this crime.

Roger Congdon, hus-band of Elizabeth’s adopted daughter Marjo-rie, was found guilty of both murders, then ac-quitted after further ex-amination in a higher court, then found guilty again after a confession, then (having denied his

confession’s legitimacy) Roger committed sui-cide.

Marjorie Congdon, wife of the accused and daughter of the mur-dered, was the only other suspect. She has been associated with five oth-Online@ www.nw-tigers.org/the-octagon

Last weekend for about 10 hours straight, the three of us watched six so-called scary movies. Oculus, 13/13/13, Big A** Spider, Silence of the Lambs, American Psycho, and The Omen (1976).

1. Oculus

Directed by: Mike Flanagan

Star-ring: Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites The film starts off by releasing Tim Russell (Brenton Thwaites) from a mental health ward then he meets up with his sister Kay-lie (Karen Gillan) after she buys this super old, black, creepy mirror. The plot of the movie is decent enough, though a bit unclear.

2. 13/13/13

Directed by: James Cul-len Bressack

Starring: Trae Ireland, Erin Coker, and Jody Bartman

This movie was legiti-mately the worst I’ve ever seen, so we only lasted 17 minutes before we had to turn it off. Those 17 minutes basically explained that on the date 13/13/13 in the Mayan calendar, an-yone not born in a leap year goes insane and be-comes either irrationally angry or extremely de-pressed.

3. Big A** Spider

Directed by: Mike Men-dez

Starring: Greg Grunberg, Lin Shaye, and Ruben Pla

er deaths since the 1977 murders, but all charges have either been dropped or never considered be-cause of lack of evi-dence. She has, however, been charged with arson and fraud among other things and has spent time

in both Minnesota and Arizona prisons.

Marjorie has had three husbands during her 83 years of life, and all three have died. Her first hus-band, as you read earlier, committed suicide after he claimed to have been wrongly accused and co-erced into confessing to

the Glensheen murders. Her second husband also committed suicide, but this time it is thought and whispered that Mar-jorie was present at the time and that perhaps it wasn’t a suicide at all. Her third husband died of cancer, according to

Marjorie, but the autopsy reports show no signs of cancer anywhere in his body. She is also con-nected to the death of a neighbor who, as her daughter claims, died after eating marmalade from Marjorie.

1. The Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire, England

The definition of haunted house can be found in-side the stories of The Ancient Ram Inn, said to have hosted the practices of devil worship, child sacrifice, and evil spirits. It was built on an an-cient pagan burial ground that existed over 5,000 years ago. Those who have dared to spend a night, often leave in the middle of their stay due to being touched by un-known sources, hearing disembodied voices, and

seeing various appari-tions in their rooms. Two child skeletons have been found under the staircase of the inn as well as broken daggers.

2. Banff Springs Hotel, Alberta, Canada

Originally built as a luxury stop-off point for train travelers, the Banff Springs Hotel has proven to be one of Canada’s most haunted places, with sights of a dancing bride whose dress is in flames, who had fallen down the stairs and bro-ken her neck, caused by the panic over her dress being on fire.

More interestingly is the bricked up room 873, to which the family that

had once occupied the room was found mur-dered. The family can still be seen roaming the hall outside of the room. Also seen is a former bellman named Sam, still dressed in his 60’s uni-form, who helps custom-ers to their rooms, some-times turning lights on and off, and opening locked doors.

3. Chateau de Brissac, Maine-et-Loire, France

Standing as the tallest castle in France, Chateau de Brissac is the home of a double murder which is estimated to have oc-curred in the 15th centu-ry.

This event has result-ed in the sightings of the

“Green Lady” in the tow-er room of the chapel, wearing a green dress. The scariest part of this lady is that her face, eyes, nose, and mouth have been replaced by gaping holes -- she has been seen multiple visi-tors and is said to be heard throughout the cas-tle in the early hours of the day.

4. Island of the Dolls, Xochimilco, Mexico

drowned. This girl's ghost is said to be stuck on the island.

In 1950 a man named Julian Santan Barrera moved to the island, una-ware of its past. Shortly after moving to the is-land Julian claimed to

have begun to speak with the little girl, then began purchasing dolls for the little girl to play with. Eventually this ceased to please the girl, and Julian disclosed to his nephew his develop-ing fear of the little girl. The same day that Julian disclosed this, his neph-ew returned to the island

only to find his uncle face down in the canal, in the same spot where the little girl had drowned seventy years prior.

Visitors of the island say that the dolls’ eyes follow them and whisper to them.

5. Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland

In its time the Edin-burgh Castle has seen its fair share of torture, war, and death. It is said that its history is what has led to the sightings of an old man wearing an apron, a headless drummer boy, and a piper who died af-ter getting lost in the tun-nels below the castle, no one knows how.

Visitors report being touched and pulled, feel-ing sudden temperature changes, seeing strange lights, feeling mist and fog, hearing strange sounds, and suddenly feeling intense dread, despair and sadness.

6. Akershus Castle/ Fortress, Oslo, Norway

The Akershus For-tress or Castle, has served many purposes since being built around 1300.

It served as a defen-sive stronghold for Oslo, a prison during the late 18th-19th centuries, and was once occupied by Nazis during WWII, who A murder haunts the

surrounding community as it is still to be un-solved. Twenty-seven years ago on April 19, 1980, someone murdered a mother, daughter, wife and friend, and no one has been convicted of those crimes.

The body of Rose-mary Wermter was found near the ballpark at 5 p.m. The local Haw-thorne woman had been stabbed multiple times to the throat and her upper chest.

Her body was then dragged from the field into the surrounding woods where it was bur-ied under pine needles

and debris.

Rosemary, 27 at the time, had attended a par-ty at the local fields the night before. The police estimate that at least 60 individuals attended the party. Some participants were underage drinkers, between the ages of 14-18. These people today would be between 41-45 years of age.

A 27 year old man named Randall Luostari was originally charged with the murder. He was acquitted by the jury on August 8, 1980. Luostari is currently serving a 70-year prison sentence for an unrelated crime. The police department is asking if anyone who

attended this event in 1980 has any memories from this night to please share. Your comment may be the missing piece they need.

The Wermter case was reopened in 1982, with no leads or arrests made. But with DNA testing being as advanced as it it, evidence

from the case was sent to FBI crime lab for DNA test-ing. It’s thought that as many as six people were involved with Wermter’s death. Detec-tives who are now on the case believe

that her killer(s) still live/ roam Douglas County. Until the case is solved, it will haunt the Hawthorne ballfields. Anyone with information can contact the head de-tective on the case, Moe at (715)-395-1695 or the law enforcement tip line at (715) 395-7468.

Our modern Hallow-een is a marvelous mish-mash of Catholic and Celtic religion. Really? Now who would believe that?

The Celtic part: an an-cient festival called Sam-hain (pronounced sah-win) was placed, by the Celts, on the day when they believed the worlds of dead and living were not distinctly separated. Ghosts of humans would return to the world of the living on this night to damage crops and cause other troubles. On the bright side, the presence of spirits made it easier for Druids to use their magic to predict the future.

Part of the predicting ritual was a sacred bon-fire where crop and ani-mal sacrifices were burned for the Celtic gods and goddesses. Later all the hearth fires in the houses would be lit with flames from the bonfire so that the people would be protect-ed through the winter. Also for protection,

when- ever

Celts went outside on Samhain they would wear costumes of animal skins and heads to dis-guise themselves so real

spirits would leave them alone.

Then came the enor-mous Roman Empire, conquering all people in its path -- including the Celts. Two Roman tradi-tions were added to Sam-hain: the commemora-tion of the dead, and the honoring of the goddess of fruit and trees.

The modern tradition of bobbing for apples -- before the practice was deemed unsanitary -- probably stemmed from the honoring of the

Ro-man goddess, whose symbol was an apple. Christianity influenced Samhain several hundred years later and the Cath-olic Church (the only

Christian religion at the time) began to shape Celtic traditions into something more “holy.” The day of celebra-tion became associated with All-Hallows (celebrated on November 1st) and Samhain was renamed All-Hallows Eve.

Traditions have changed again. All-Hallows Eve has been

simplified to

“Halloween” and no longer has a strong con-nection to All-Hallows --

now called All Saints Day.

Americans have put a unique spin on Hallow-een. Starting as a harvest celebration marked by parties, Halloween was observed by very few. Those few who did cele-brate told stories and for-tunes, played games, sang, danced, and pulled pranks.

As fall festivals featur-ing the afore-mentioned activities became more common in the 1800’s, Halloween slowly gained popularity.

The flood of immi-grants who came, pri-marily from Ireland, boosted the number of participating Americans considerably. Irish and English traditions mixed with those of America, and Halloween became history.

The development of the holiday does not stop there, of course. Trick-or -treating is rather new, as far as traditions go, and predicting marriages on Halloween using yarn, apple peels, or mirrors is no longer common prac-tice.

By Cora Deadman

used it as an execution sight.

With this vast history it isn’t much of a surprise to find beings like Mal-canisen, a demon dog that guards the gates of the castles. It is said that anyone who is ap-proached by Malcanisen will die a horrible death

within the following three months.

There have also been sightings of a woman named Mantelgeisten, wearing a long robe and walking to her chamber; she has no facial fea-tures.

7. St. Augustine Light-house, Florida, United States

Built in 1974, the St.

Au-gustine Lighthouse and its surrounding buildings are believed to be haunt-ed.

The daughters of Hez-ekiah Pittee, who was in charge of construction of the lighthouse, have been seen on the tower cat-walk, as they had died during construction, a tragic accident on site. Apparitions of a woman crying for help

have been witnessed and also that of a man, Wil-liam A. Harn, a Civil War hero, and a former keeper of the lighthouse. TAPS, or Ghost Hunters, visited the lighthouse and captured voice record-ings of a woman crying for help, as well as imag-es of shadow figurimag-es, coining the location as “the Mona Lisa of para-normal sights.”

Jay’s Reviews

Oculus- 36/45 victims claimed by haunted mirrors. This was pretty good. Inter-esting, though could have been clearer. The ending was extremely unsatisfying.

13/13/13- .00013/13 Mayan calendars. Only redeeming quality it had was the 7 con-secutive painfully horrible fake slaps in which you could see the man clapping to make the slap noise. We only made it 17 minutes into the movie it was so bad.”

Big A** Spider- “2/10 big a** spiders. Sorta funny, but sexist, racist, and just overall stupid. Not highly recommended. A lot of gross spiders.”

Silence of The Lambs

-“9.89/10 death’s-head hawk

moths. I loved this movie. Only fault I had was that it was a bit long. Had great plot, character development, and suspense. They could have made it a tad scarier but overall I 100% recom-mend Silence of The Lambs.”

American Psycho-“0/10 aristocratic jerks. There was no redeeming quality, well, it was funny, but the kind of funny that is so frustrating it makes you want to rip your eyes out. I regret watching

the entire thing, it’s

‘garbage for your soul.’”

The Omen- “333/666 Satan spawn. This was so boring. It did have a decent plot and idea behind it, but the exe-cution brought it down. Al-so, unbelievable injuries from a fall from one floor.”

Big A** Spider fol-lows a lowly extermina-tor through his trying journey when he is con-vinced by a Mexican man who barely knows English to go against the wishes of the military to track and kill a spider that accidentally came into contact with a

growth hormone created from biological matter found on Mars.

Cora’s Reviews

13/13/13 was terribly introduced. The script was unclear when exposing the extent of who was affected by the 13/13/13 phenomenon. The acting was terrible. I would give this movie a zero out of five.

American Psycho could be called “disgusting,” “infuriating,” and “violent.” By the end of the movie 20-40 people are dead and a full confes-sion has been made. There are no con-sequences. No one can believe that a rich, good-looking, 27-year-old white man could be a killer. One star out of five.

Big A** Spider‘s only redeeming qual-ity was its prolific use of puns -- which weren’t even good. The humor was per-vading, cheap, and sometimes sexist and racist. The plot was predictable to an extreme and would only be interest-ing to a ten-year-old with a potty mouth. One star.

Oculus was actually a good movie. The plot made sense even with the flash-backs and hallucinations included. The actors performed admirably and the script was of good quality. I thought the story had very few plot-holes and made sense overall. The theme of being con-trolled was expressed throughout. 4 stars.

The Omen was interesting and original, but had little action. The energy of the actors was low, which made the movie a bit boring. The cliffhanger ending was a nice touch, though. The Omen earned 3 out of 5 stars.

The Silence of the Lambs had some fascinating psychological aspects, good actors, and a complex and interesting plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end and appreciated the brilliance of Hannibal Lector. The dialogue, especially that which involves Hannibal was particularly interesting. Five stars and nicely creepy.

Killer’s Reviews

13/13/13- 6th place. This was the ab-solute worst movie I have ever seen. The stage slaps that were attempted at the 17 minute mark were what really put me over the edge. Our high school fight club does better.

Big A** Spider- 5th place. This mov-ie has a very Jack Black sort of vibe to it. It has a terrible plot, no real facts, and absolutely no point to the movie. But it was very amusing and was not the worst movie I’ve had to sit through. Easily the funniest movie we watched.

The Omen- 4th place. This movie held its own with a decent plot, fairly good acting for the time it was pro-duced, but if I’m being completely honest, I didn’t get into it. The con-cept is pretty boring, but it was defi-nitely more well done than Big A** Spider.

Oculus- 3rd. I enjoyed this movie, and it was the scariest we watched, but it had very little plot and the most unsatisfactory ending I’ve ever expe-rienced and I was also annoyed with the lack of attention to detail in the history of the mirror. This movie is definitely worth watching.

American Psycho- 2nd. I personally believe American Psycho deserves this second place, though I seem to be the only one. I appreciated the 90’s music references and the irony. While watching, I was so annoyed that I couldn’t appreciate it. Looking back, however, I would see this movie again. Think Ferris Bueller mixed with Batman.

4. The Mad Biter (Richard Macek)

On August 15, 1974, the Mad Biter beat and stabbed to death Paula Cupit, a hotel maid of 24. But even after she was dead, he wasn’t done. He then chewed on and mu-tilated her corpse.

A little while later, he decided to attack and rape another maid. How-ever, she survived and informed police.

He then murdered Nancy Lossman and her 3-year old daughter Lisa. His last attack was Ju-ly 1975, in which he bat-tered and left for dead (though she survived) a young woman at a laun-dromat.

1980, Richard Macek was finally convicted he was sentenced to 230-430 years for rape and murder, but was found hanged of his own ac-cord on March 2, 1987.

3. The Milwaukee North Side Strangler (Walter Ellis)

Walter Ellis raped and strangled black women from aged 19-41. His DNA was found on six victims and on a can of pepper spray at the scene of the seventh murder. He was charged with first-degree intentional homicide for all, and was serving out multiple life sentences when he passed on December 1,

2013 of natural causes.

2. The Plainfield Ghoul (Ed Gein)

Edward Gein, other-wise known as “the Plainfield Ghoul”, only murdered two (as we can tell) people. However, he did something just, if not more, grisly.

He admitted to rob-bing nine graves, though he didn’t take jewelry. He took the bodies of women who were similar in appearance to his late mother. He also made a “woman-suit,” which was literally a suit made out of women’s skins. Also found in his home were:

 Nine masks of human skin

 Bowls made from human skulls

 Ten female heads with the tops sawed off

 Human skin covering several chair seats

 Bernice Worden’s and Mary Hogan's heads

 Skulls on his bed-posts

 Organs in the refrig-erator

 A pair of lips on a drawstring for a win-dow shade

 A belt made from human female nip-ples

 A lampshade made from the skin from a human face

Ed Gein died at age 77 July 26, 1984.

1. The Milwaukee Can-nibal (Jeffrey Dahmer)

Jeffrey Dahmer is, to me, hands down the most awful serial killer of Wisconsin. He murdered 17 men, but that’s the least gory thing he did. He would pick up his victims at gay bars then typically bludgeon them to death, or slit their throats. He kept their severed genitalia, hands, heads and limbs.

The police found his bed-room wall lined with photo-graphs of

dis-membered and mangled limbs and bodies.

He kept a barrel of ac-id that would dissolve the human body to sludge to be discarded down the toilet. He had a human heart in the freez-er, as well as human heads in the fridge. Neighbors reported strange occurrences at his home including the buzz of saws and gro-tesque smells coming from his apartment. It was Jeffrey’s goal to create someone who was sexually submissive to him, and would do what-ever he wanted whenwhat-ever he wanted.

He tried injecting acid and boiling water into the frontal lobe of his victims, usually while they were still alive. It’s believed that he ate some of his victims as well. He was sentenced to 957 years in prison, the maximum Wisconsin allowed. However, he wasn’t able to live out his sentence before Christopher Scarver, an-other inmate, fatally beat him November 28, 1994.
