Third Sunday after Epiphany

Recorded on January 21, 2021

Prayer of Preparation

When God called him, Jonah at first ran away. God calls us to turn to him instead of running away. Lord, when we think we have turned as far and as often as we can, help

us turn again.

Sung Call to Worship 726 Will You Come and Follow Me (vv. 1,3,4) Mary Carson

Jesus has called us to leave our comfortable ways and venture forward with him.

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown; will you let my name be known; will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

You will be led into fields of mission and service.

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean, and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Jesus, where you lead us, we will follow you faithfully.

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide if I but call your name? Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same? Will you use the faith you’ve found to re-shape the world around, through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

We Hear God’s Word

Mindfulness Prayer Jerry Custer

Hebrew Scriptures Jonah 3:1-10 Randy Wright 3 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2 “Get up, go to

Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah set

out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an

exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4 Jonah began to go into the city,

going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and

everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth.

6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his

robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 Then he had a proclamation

made in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. 8 Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry

mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his

fierce anger, so that we do not perish.”

10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed

his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.

All that we have, All that we are, All that we hope to be: Work of our hands, fruit of our lives; All this, we offer to Thee.

Circle of Gratitude Sharon York

Prayer of Thanksgiving & The Lord’s Prayer Pam Jusino Generous God, we ask you to bless the gifts we give this morning. We ask that that you help grow the trust in us, that we might follow without looking back and that we might leave behind more of our old lives to experience more deeply new life in you. Help us to leave our nets on the shore, leave those things that seemed essential before we heard the call, so that we might travel the road you have put before us. For we ask in the name of the One who taught us how we are to live, and taught us to pray together saying...

“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.”

We Follow God’s Word into the World

Musical Selection 346 For the healing of the Nations Fred Kaan

For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord;

for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords.

To a life of love in action help us rise and pledge our word.

Lead us forward into freedom, from despair your world release, that, redeemed from war and hatred,

all may come and go in peace. Show us how, through care and goodness,

All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned: pride of status, race or schooling,

dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow life's brief span. You, Creator-God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness, bring the life of Christ to mind; that by our response and service

earth its destiny may find.
