Quick Start Guide
Before you Begin
Be sure to install RelayFax directly on the server (and not through RDP or other remote means) to ensure that the printer drivers install properly.
The RelayFax installation program will ask you a number of questions during the installation process that are required to configure your server. While it is possible to enter this information after installation, you can save time and end your installation with a fully configured server by knowing the answers to these questions before you begin.
You will need to know:
• The drive and directory in which you wish to install RelayFax (the default is C:Program Files\RelayFax)
• The registered user’s name and company
• The email address that RelayFax will monitor for outbound faxes
• The default email address that RelayFax will send all incoming faxes to (this needs to be a different address than the one RelayFax will monitor for outbound faxes)
• Which components to install:
o the Server Application and Support Files o the RelayFax SMTP/Fax Client
o the printer drivers o the OCR Engine
For the Server Installation, you need to know:
• Your Company name (Example: Alt-N Technologies)
• The Identification String that you wish to assign to your fax device (this is usually the same as your company name) - in some areas of the world, this string is required by law
• Your fax and voice numbers
• The domain name or IP address of your mail server (If you are running an internal mail server like MDaemon, you can use the Internal IP address of that machine. This could also be your ISP’s mail server).
• The logon and password for the RelayFax account on your mail server or at your ISP
Before installing the RelayFax server software, you need to install the Windows Fax Service (also known as Windows Fax and Scan) on your server. This may require the Windows CD or other installation source.
For the Client Installation, you need to know:
• The domain name or IP address of your mail server or the ISP’s mail server
• Your email address
• The email address of the RelayFax mail account

checked allows the RelayFax server to run automatically when you start the computer.

Quick Start Guide
Step 4 — Company Name and CSID String
Each fax device must have a unique Call Subscriber Identification (CSID) string. It is common practice to use either your company name or fax number as your CSID. When two fax devices are negotiating a connection, they make this information available to each other.
Step 5 — Fax and Voice Number
If you would like your fax and voice numbers to appear on your default cover page, then enter them here. Click “Next” to continue.
Enter your company name and fax CSID string, then click “Next.”

Step 6 — SMTP Server Information
Enter the domain or IP address of your SMTP server, and the port on which email messages are sent (in most cases, port 25). Inbound faxes will be sent to this server for distribution to their intended recipients.
Step 7 — Configure the RelayFax MAIL FROM value
Enter the SMTP MAIL From value that RelayFax will use when connecting to your mail server, then enter the default recipient address for messages whose recipient cannot be determined. The default recipient address must not be the same address as the RelayFax server’s email account, and should not be accessed by RelayFax when it checks for new mail to fax out. Click “Next” to continue.

Quick Start Guide
Step 8 — POP Server Information
Enter your POP server’s host name or IP address, port (port 110 in most cases), and POP account login credentials. This is the email address that RelayFax will check for faxes waiting to be sent out, and will be listed in RelayFax under “Mail Sources.” If you have MDaemon you can check the box on this screen to create a RelayFax account on your MDaemon server. Click “Next” to continue.
Step 9 — RelayFax SMTP Client & Printer Driver Setup
On the RelayFax SMTP Client / Printer Driver Setup screen, leave the upgrade box unchecked and click “Next.” This is for the client that resides on the server, and is mostly used for testing only.

Quick Start Guide
Sending a Fax via an Email Client
Most of the time, printing to the RelayFax Printer Driver from within a Windows
application will create a fax. However, it is possible, and sometimes most effective, to simply launch your email client and directly generate a message to be faxed. This is done by composing your email message and addressing it to one of the email accounts that you know RelayFax is monitoring. For example, if RelayFax is collecting all the email messages sent to [email protected] then sending your message to that address will get it faxed. Several special considerations must be observed in order to use this method of faxing.
When you address your email message you can specify just a fax number on the TO:
line like this: ‘555-1212’<[email protected]>
You can also specify the recipient’s name, company information, and fax number like this: ‘555-1212, John Brown, Altn.com’<[email protected]>
Note how each part within the quotations is separated by a comma. The format is like this: [Open Quote]FAX NUMBER[Comma]PERSONAL NAME[Comma]COMPANY NAME[Close Quote]
If you are using Outlook or another email Client that will separate addresses by
commas, you will need to disable this feature within the Email client. Some email clients will not let you place quotation marks in the To field. If this is your case you will need to address your email message like this:
TO: 555-1212, John Brown, Altn.com, [email protected] Notice the missing quotation marks ( ‘ ‘ ).

OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technology that functions much like a printer in reverse. An OCR system reads printed text and converts it to an electronic format for use in document processing applications. You can read more about OCR here:
