What is UDL?
(Universal Design for
Learning)
Universal Design for Learning
Defined as a set of principles for
curriculum development that give
all individuals equal opportunities to
learn.
Architecture & Product Development
Universal Design in architecture and product
development illustrates that designing for
variability from the beginning is a more
practical, elegant and effective approach than
adding on.
Systematic Learner Variability
“We’ve identified
three dimensions of
systematic variability that will exist in
every learning environment at every age
.
And those are differences in terms of the
way that people
represent information
,
differences in the way that they
engage
with material
, and differences in the way
they can
act upon material and show what
they know
.” – Dr. Todd Rose
Provide Multiple Means of
Representation
Recognition Networks
• The “What” of Learning
How we gather facts and
categorize what we see,
hear, and read. Identifying
letters, words, or an
author's style are
recognition tasks.
Present information and
content in different ways.
Provide Multiple Means of
Action and Expression
Strategic Networks
• The “How” of Learning
Planning and performing
tasks. How we organize
and express our ideas.
Writing an essay or solving
a math problem are
strategic tasks.
Differentiate the way
that students can express
what they know.
Provide Multiple Means of
Engagement
Affective Networks
•
The “Why” of Learning
How learners get
engaged and stay
motivated. How they are
challenged, excited, or
interested. These are
affective dimensions.
Stimulate interest and
motivation for learning.
The Power of Digital Media
Digital Media are:
–
Versatile
–
Transformable

What is Kagan Cooperative Learning and how is it used in the UDL classroom? -Kagan offers multiple means of engagement, representation and action & expression, which mirrors the UDL framework
-Increase academic achievement through engagement
-Kagan Structures engage every student – no one is left out (or falls through the cracks) -Most structures develop and engage a range of intelligences
-Basics of Kagan – How do I start? Student grouping and then your are ready to begin practicing your structures.

Presentation Audience:
The presentation will be given to the School Advisory Council and the Parent Teacher Organization Meeting on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 6 PM.
The Goal:
The stakeholders at the presentation will understand how Edmodo can be utilized to improve student achievement and prolong the learning day through utilizing this
educational social network. Stake holders will understand Edmodo provides a student the ability to communicate, be creative , collaborate with others and become aware of their world.
The Action:
Parents will insure their child has a signed permission slip to utilize Edmodo at school under the guidance of their teacher. Parents will ask their child about their Edmodo account to see the importance of educational networking.
