Rainiers defeated the 51s 12-7 last night in the finale of the brief four-game road trip in the Pacific Northwest before a sellout crowd of 7,081 at Cheney Stadium.

Las Vegas offense: The 51s recorded 9 hits and

designated hitter Matt Reynolds was 2-for-4, walk, double, 3 RBI. Left fielder Alex Castellanos was 2-for-4, double, HBP, solo homer in fifth inning; first baseman Brandon Allen was 2-for-4, walk, run scored and catcher Anthony Recker (1-for-5) hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Tacoma offense: The Rainiers recorded 16 hits and broke

a 7-7 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. Right fielder

Tacoma defeats Las Vegas 8-4 in series opener (Tuesday, June 30): The Rainiers defeated the 51s 8-4 in game one of the brief four-game road trip in the Pacific Northwest before a crowd of 2,935 at Cheney Stadium.

Las Vegas offense: The 51s recorded 9 hits and center fielder Alex Castellanos was 2-for-5, double, 2 RBI. First baseman Brooks Conrad was 2-for-5, RBI, run scored and catcher Dan Rohlfing was 2-for-4, double, run scored.

Tacoma offense: The Rainiers recorded 16 hits and built an 8-1 lead after five innings. First baseman Jesus Montero

first inning on a three-run homer by center fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2-for-3, walk, SF, 4 RBI, two runs scored) and a two-run homer by left fielder Brandon Allen (2-for-4, walk, two runs scored). PACIFIC CONFERENCE SOUTHERN DIVISION CHAMPIONS (2013 & 2014) – Las Vegas has been the Pacific

Conference Southern Division Champions in back-to-back seasons (2013 & 2014)…the 51s

were in first place wire-to-wire during the 2014 campaign…Las Vegas has finished over the .500 mark in three consecutive seasons (2012-14) for the first time in franchise history (32 seasons, 1983-2014).

LAS VEGAS – TIED FOR BEST RECORD IN 16-TEAM PCL (2014 REGULAR SEASON)

51s 81-63 (.563); Reno 81-63 (.563)…the Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, had the best

record in the International League (14 teams) and all of Triple-A baseball with a 81-62 (.566) mark.

LAS VEGAS 80-WIN SEASONS – The Las Vegas franchise has won 80 or more games in a season five times: 85

(2002, franchise best 85-59 record (.590); 83 (1983 inaugural season, 83-60 (.580); 81 (81-63, .563 in 2013); 81 (81-63, .563 in 2014); 80 (1986 PCL champions with an 80-62 mark (.563)…Las Vegas recorded back-to-back 80-win seasons for the first time in franchise history (2013 & 2014).

NEW YORK METS NICKNAME: The “METS” Nickname: The name Mets was judged by club owner Mrs. Joan Payson

as the one that best met five basic criteria: 1. It met public and press acceptance; 2. It was closely related to the team’s corporate name (Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.); 3. It was descriptive of the Metropolitan area; 4. It had a brevity that delighted copy readers everywhere; 5. It had historical background, referring to the Metropolitans of the 19th century American Association….other names considered included: Rebels, Skyliners, NYBs, Burros (for the five boroughs), Continentals, Avengers...as well as Jets and Islanders, names that would eventually find their way into the New York sports scene…the Mets inaugural season was in 1962.

Blum Broadcast Booth” prior to the 2013 season to honor the 51s Special Assistant to the General Manager…“The Blummer” passed away on July 22, 2012 at the age of 91...also served as the play-by-play voice for Stars/51s baseball in selected seasons from 1985-2005 & 2008-10…his company, Robert J. Blum Productions, also produced Las Vegas Triple-A professional baseball games broadcast on radio and television for several seasons.

51s Manager Wally Backman (2014 PCL Manager of the Year): He was named the 22nd manager (January 7, 2013)

in the history of the Las Vegas franchise (1983 - present, 32 seasons). Frank Violais in his second season as the pitching coach at Triple-A Las Vegas and also his fifth season overall with the

Mets organization. Minor League Coaching Career: Spent two seasons as the pitching coach at Single-A Savannah of the South Atlantic League (2012-13)…in 2013, the Sand Gnats compiled an overall record of 77-61 (.558) and defeated Hagerstown (3-games-to-1) to capture the SAL Championship…began his coaching career in 2011 with the Mets as the pitching coach with Single-A Brooklyn of the New York-Penn League.
