Under the slogan Luna OnAir, we present a comprehensive compressed air offering comprising the brands Ferax, Luna and Abac.

We hope that this catalogue will be a helpful guide when choosing a compressor with the different options currently available. We also want to spread relevant information about the compressed air concept in its entirety in order to increase the level of knowledge. In addition to a wide range of all sorts of accessories, Luna also offers a range of services, warranties, service and spare parts in the concept. The goal is for Luna OnAir to be the best compressed air offering.

Luna focuses on compressed air

You should base your choice of compressor on what is to be driven and the pressure and flow required. To help, you can use the specifications in the tables. You should always include a degree of over capacity to be on the safe side.

The questions that are good to get answers to before choosing your compressor are: • How large is the air requirement?

• What working pressure is required? • What are the requirements on air quality? • Where will the compressor be located? • Is there enough power in the building?

When the need is identified, the following should be answered: • Max. load rate?

• Connection cable, length, cross section? • Ventilation, supply and exhaust air.

• Sound level? Depending on location, what is acceptable? • Service accessibility?

When you can answer most of these questions, your compressed air dealer will then help you to choose the right compressor.

The degree of utilization must be taken into consideration when choosing a compressor. For a screw compressor, a 70% utilization rate can be chosen, which in this case gives an appropriate compressor capacity of 1 026

For a reciprocating compressor, a 50% utilization rate can be chosen, which normally is 1 436. The number of machines that can simultaneously be in operation must also be taken into account.

In the concept of compressed air technology a range of parameters are housed that are important to know in order to select the right compressor, and to achieve optimum operation for your specifi c needs and require-ments. On the following pages we intend to go into the subject in detail. We start with size.

The size is a measure of the compressor’s ability to deliver compressed air, i.e. the combined capacity of the compressor block and the electric motor. In Europe the fl ow that we are speaking is normally stated as Free Air Delivery (FAD) in litres/minute or litres/second. In order to give the compressor a buffer with compressed air, you usually have an air reservoir next to the block, but the size of the air reservoir says nothing about the size of the compressor, which is mainly determined by the power of the electric motor and the block’s capacity.

An electric compressor comprises, among others, of: 1. Compressor block

2. Electric motor 3. Push bar switch 4. Non-return valve 5. Tank

The push bar switch controls the operation and in this is a Max/Delta pressure preset, i.e. the pressure interval in which the compressor works. The maxi-mum pressure and Delta pressure are adapted for any given compressor, its fuse protection, safety valves and should not be modifi ed by non-authorized persons.

Compressed air technology in brief

(9)

Reciprocating compressors

The models are available as Direct or Belt-driven, Oil lubricated or Oil-free, and in one or two stage designs. When compression is created, the piston pushes the air pass the valve plate in the cylinder head. This process also generates heat, which on most models is air-cooled. Two stage models also have a cooler between stages and it is exactly the cooling that increases the efficiency2 of these models. The load rate3 normally lies at about

50% on direct drive models, or at about 70% on belt-driven models. Screw compressors

The compression is created by two screw-shaped profiles with a very accurate fit. The air is com-pressed mixed with oil, where the function of the oil is to cool and lubricate. Before the process is complete, the oil is separated from the compressed air in the separator filter. The process is normal-ly monitored by electronics and the load rate3 is 100%, thanks to the oil cooling.

Cooling and ventilation

Compressors create a lot of heat. The physical laws give a rise in temperature at a specific compression. As an example of this, we can mention that at the valve plate on a reciprocating compressor with a maximum working pressure of 10 bar and at full operation, a temperature of about 200 °C is reached. It is therefore important that the compressor is placed in a well-ventilated room. The basic rule is that the ventilation area, needed to dissipate heat from the compressor room, must be at least double the size of the compressor fan’s area. (1 × the area in the room at floor level + 1 × the area out of the room at ceiling level.)

2 The degree of efficiency characterizes how efficiently a system converts energy into some form of useful work. In practice the degree of

efficiency is always less than 1, since all true systems are affected by some form of energy loss. A drop in temperature has a positive effect on efficiency and in this way can improve utilization of the supplied energy.

(10)

Air quantity

The compressor produces a specific flow (capacity), air quantity or volume/time. The capacity is usually presented in m³/min, l/min or l/s and states at what pressure it was measured. The value is called Free Air Delivery (FAD) (Example, ACB 10-270 gives 970 l/min FAD at 6.3 bar.) The measure-ment standard used is ISO 1217.

Air pressure

The compressed air is compressed to a given maximum pressure, generally from 8 to 10 bar. (Higher pres-sures can occur.) The pressure at each point of use is adjusted by means of a regulator and is determined by the application. Producers of air tools, air motors, paint sprayers and pneumatics normally state at what pressure their products should be used. Examples of required operating pressure for different applications: • Ordinary cleaning/blowgun, about 6–8 bar

• Ordinary air motors, grinding machines, impact wrenches, about 6–7 bar • Paint sprayers, about 2–4 bar

• Pneumatics, cylinders, typically 5-7 bar Air Quality

Compressed air is used in everything from workshops to laboratory environments and consequently the demands on compressed air quality differ. Typical criteria considered are: • Water/oil content • Particle content

• Sterility • Odour/taste

Large compressor installations are usually equipped with post-treatment of the compressed air to conform to the different needs.

Airflow

To get the most out of your compressor, you should always think about the airflow that you will need. Hose size, length and the type of hose to be used have a far-reaching effect on the result.

Example:a straight hose with an inside diameter of 6 mm and a length of 3 metres can give 360 l/min. The same hose in a longer design, for example 10 metres, only gives 200 l/min. If, however, you choose a straight hose with an inside diameter of 9 mm and a length of 10 metres, the flow in the hose can reach 535 l/min. When using 3”– 4” nail guns, you should therefore select a hose that has an inside diameter of at least 9 mm in order to be sure that the tool can perform the work. Large compressor installations are usually equipped with post-treatment of the compressed air to conform to the different needs.

• Extends the life of the equipment and improves the quality of the compressed air. • Increases reliability and reduces the risk of leakage from the compressed air system. • Low energy consumption, due to the energy saving function.

• Good environmental protection, no CFC gases which affect the climate. Advantages

Refrigeration dryers designed to remove water from the compressed air through a single cooling process. Cooled using Freon R 134a. The condensed water is separated in the centrifugal separator, which automatically removes the condensate through the condensation drain.
