“I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord!’ ”
Psalm 122 is what is called “A Song of As-cents.” Jerusalem is a city on a high hill, and the Temple was on the top of the top of it. People would travel uphill, ascending to the house of the Lord.
We’ve been in a virtual valley for 15 months. Our ascent to the house of the Lord began a few weeks ago as we prepared spiritually to return. For some it’s been a joyful journey out of dark-ness toward the light. For some it’s been uphill all the way, a strenuous march to shake the fear of socializing again. Some are near the front in the processional to the house of the Lord, others near the rear. It’s okay, friends, wherever you are.
Our English friend, the poet and priest Mal-colm Guite, says in his poem “Singing Bowl”: “Begin the song exactly where you are, / Remain
within the world of which you’re made. / Call nothing common in the earth or air, / Accept it all and let it be for good.”
We’ve been fearing earth and air for more than a year now. The challenge to us is indeed to “accept it all and let it be for good.” That doesn’t mean the virus that had spread through the air is good or that all the people of the earth have behaved well throughout these months; it means that by accepting it all we can begin to look at how it might leave good as well as ill in its wake.
“All things work together for good,” St. Paul tells us in a favorite but often misunderstood verse (Romans 8:28). Overly pious readers are thus wont to see everything as good or at least as good in disguise. But the deeper truth is simply that God is never thwarted by evil. God can bring good from bad without doing bad to bring good.
So, how do you come into the house of the Lord today? I hope you come with longing gladness, but even if it’s with lingering sadness, “begin the song exactly where you are.”

please turn off all cell phones, pagers and alarm watches.
Prelude Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow arr. Carolyn Hamlin
Call to Worship *Brethren, We Have Met to Worship arr. Jeff Brummel Brian Stinecipher, solo
Brethren, we have met to worship and adore the Lord our God; Will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down; Brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.
Sisters, will you join and help us? Moses’ sister aided him; Will you help the trembling mourners who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior, tell them that he will be found; Sisters, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around. Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other, too; Let us love and pray for sinners, till our God makes all things new.
Then he’ll call us home to heaven, at his table we’ll sit down; Christ will gird himself, and serve us with sweet manna all around.
**Come, Christians, Join to Sing arr. Stan Pethel
Sanctuary Choir
Come, Christians, join to sing Alleluia! Amen! Loud praise to Christ our King; Alleluia! Amen! Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice;
Praise is his gracious choice: Alleluia! Amen! *9:00 service / ** 11:00 service
+All congregants who are able are invited to stand.
Praise yet our Christ again; Alleluia! Amen! Life shall not end the strain; Alleluia! Amen! On heaven’s blissful shore his goodness we’ll adore,
Singing forevermore, Alleluia! Amen!

Psalm Reading — Psalm 138 Ashley Robinson / Jenna Sullivan
Leader: I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; People: I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your
steadfast love and your faithfulness; for you have exalted your name and your word above everything.
Leader: On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.
People: All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth.
Leader: They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord.
People: For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly; but the haughty he perceives from far away.
Leader: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me.
People: The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.

+Gospel Reading — Mark 3:19c–35 Becky Waterfield / Lydia Perry
Then [Jesus] went home; and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat. When his family heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebul, and by the ruler of the demons he casts out demons.” And he called them to him, and spoke to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come. But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered. “Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they
utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.” Then his mother and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are
my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.” This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Gracias a Dios.

For the third year in a row, Friday Friends has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the AWARE Foundation. The funds will be used to purchase consumable supplies and bring
in professional programs such as music and movement therapy.
Friday Friends is a ministry of Wilshire that provides four hours of respite on the second and fourth Fridays of each month for a family member caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or a similar form of dementia. The program
is fully run by volunteers from the church and the community. It is funded through grants, the church budget and donations from participants and the community.
From AWARE’s website (awaredallas.org): “AWARE conducts an annual grant review process
resulting in the selection of the most exemplary
nonprofit organizations in Dallas that are work-ing on the front lines in the fight against Alz-heimer’s disease. AWARE provides funding and
support to those leading groups which offer programs, education, and resources to caregivers and victims of Alzheimer’s disease, and to organizations doing valu-able research to find prevention and ultimately a cure.”
Friday Friends is proud to have met the criteria of the AWARE grant review committee. If you or someone you know is caring for a loved one with dementia, and would like to participate in the Friday Friends program, contact Marilyn Morgan or Martie Miller (contact info in the Wilshire directory) or Jessica Capps, Minister to Senior Adults. Friday Friends hopes to resume in-person meetings in August.

Book club welcomes Collin
Yarbrough on July 15
The Anti-Racism Book Club welcomes Wilshire’s own Collin Yarbrough to its next meeting for a discussion of his new book, Paved a Way:
Infrastructure, Policy & Racism in an American City. The
meet-ing will take place Thursday, July 15, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. In Paved a Way, Collin tells the stories of five neighborhoods in Dallas and how they were shaped by racism and economic oppression. North Dallas, Deep El-lum, Little Mexico, Tenth Street and Fair Park look nothing like they did during their prime, and Collin argues that their respective declines were intentional — that their foundations were chipped away over time. Sign up for the Zoom link and purchase the book (while supplies last) at wilshirebc.org/registration.

Meet & Greet
JUNE 27 & JULY 25
9:15 – 10:45 A.M.
Are you a guest or new Wilshire member? Perhaps you joined during the pandemic and don’t yet have a full picture of everything this faith community has to offer. Mark your calendar to attend one of our Wilshire Welcome Meet & Greet events this summer. These two informal sessions will help you learn about Wilshire, with topics ranging from Sunday morning options to volunteer and advocacy opportunities. Plus there will be a Q&A time with Senior Pastor George Mason. Join us June 27 or July 25 in Commu-nity Hall, downstairs under the Sanctuary.
Support local Black-owned businesses at this event put on by our friends at Friendship West Baptist Church. West Wall Street commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the Black Wall Street massacre of Tulsa, Oklahoma. West Wall Street will feature food, clothes, service vendors and more.
Wilshire’s Christian Advocacy Committee invites you to participate in Depolarizing Con-versations on Race, a free workshop produced and facilitated by Braver Angels. Described as a “skills workshop for difficult (and necessary) conversations between white Americans about race and public policy,” the event will be held on Zoom on Thursday, June 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sign up at wilshirebc.org/registration by Wednesday, June 16, to receive the Zoom link. While anyone is welcome, the event is de-signed for self-identified whites who want to communicate more effectively about race and public policy, who believe in the equal worth
and dignity of all persons, and who are con-cerned about our nation’s problems with race and want to see progress.
Braver Angels (braverangels.org) is a
non-profit organization aiming to unite red and blue Americans in a working alliance to depolar-ize America. They are scheduled to conduct an in-person workshop called Families & Politics for Wilshire on October 28.
