Substantial data supports our Federal Government’s perspective that Canada is lagging behind the rest of the developed world in commercializing its health research to create economic and social value for Canadians. This year’s forum will focus on the current status of commercializing health research in Canada and it will identify some of the key opportunities for enhancing commercialization and also some of the barriers, challenges and concerns in the academic community. Peter Nicholson, who has global insights to share with us, will present the keynote address and we will hear from a variety of Canadian experts sharing their wisdom on what they have done, what they are doing and what they believe should be done to accelerate Canada’s progress, with evidence, in this area. Every participant will have a chance to have their opinions heard in breakout sessions before the end of the forum and every participant will leave with some ideas for action that can be adopted by our members and by the community to enhance commercialization of health research in Canada over the next few years. We strongly believe that knowledge gained at this forum and its follow-up actions can enhance the commercialization of health research with health, social and economic benefits for Canada and beyond.

The overall objective of the Forum is to support and extend evidence-informed discussion of commercialization of health research in Canada. More evidence is required regarding current barriers to, and concerns associated with,

commercialization of health research. These will be explored by examining learnings from successes, delineating needs and gaps, and seeking potential solutions that address diverse issues at the core of Canadian efforts to benefit from

commercialization of health research. Beneficiaries of evidence-informed assessment of these commercialization issues would include: academia, faculties of health sciences (FHS), academic health organizations (AHO), their researchers and trainees, industry, government, and the ‘clients’ (patients, families and the population they serve) nationally and internationally. Themes to be addressed during the Forum (in plenary and breakouts):

 The current status of commercializing health research in Canada

 The current challenges, barriers, and concerns related to commercialization of health research in Canada - from various perspectives

 Needs and gaps in the supporting evidence

 Some potential directions to address the diverse issues of commercialization Thank you for participating in the2014 CAHS Forum.

Sincerely,

UTCOMES FOR THE

F

UTURE JANEGREENBSC,MSC(UBC),PHD(MEMORIAL),ONL.

Memorial University of Newfoundland

Dr. Jane Green has been at the fore-front of genetic research of hereditary cancers and hereditary eye diseases for 35 years. Her studies led to the discovery of novel genes in Newfoundland and Labrador families and a new understanding of pathways to development of cancer and blindness. Green pioneered the development of screening programs for earlier and more successful treatment of hereditary tumours. Her work has saved lives and profoundly improved health and quality of life for hundreds of

Newfoundlanders. She is an honorary member of the Canadian College of Medical

Geneticists (CCMG). In 2008 she received a CIHR-KT award, in 2012 she received the CCMG Founders Award and in 2014 she was named a Member of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador.
