General Description

The Hous ton En gi neers, Inc. Hydra- Thrust™ tool provides con stant weight on the drill bit. This con stant weight al lows the rate of pene tra tion to be main tained and low ers the risk of stall ing the down hole mo tor. The Hydra- Thrust tool is lo cated in the lower drill ing as sem bly. As the bit weight drills off, pump force opens the tool. At the same time, as pump pres sure de creases, weight from above causes the tool to close. The com bi na tion of opening and clos ing the Hydra Thrust tool will main tain a con -stant weight on the bit.

As a re sult of ad vances in shaft seals and me chani cal im prove ments, the Hydra Thrust tool is an ex cel lent drill ing tool to coun ter act rig or ous drill -ing re quire ments such as:

• High tem pera tures

• High- drilling torque

• Long- term use

The tool parts are made from high qual ity steel with a heat treat ment pro -cess that pro vides the best high strength and fa tigue re sis tant prop er ties. Spe cial hard trim and plat ing pro cesses are used to con di tion and re con di -tion wear sur faces, to as sure long term use.

Placement

Sev eral fac tors are con sid ered when de ter min ing the place ment for the Hydra- Thrust Tool. They are:

• Pres sure avail able at the Hydra- Thrust Tool.

• Ex ten sion force of the Hydra- Thrust Tool.

• Buoyed weight of the bot tom hole as sem bly.

• De sired weight on bit.

Place ment in Ver ti cal or De vi ated Wells

The exten sion force of the tool plus the buoyed weight of the BHA be low the tool shown equal the de sired weight on bit. Place the re main ing BHA above the tool.

The buoyed weight in com pres sion above the Hydra- Thrust tool must be greater than the ex ten sion force of the tool.

Place ment in Hori zon tal Wells

Place close to the bit.

The buoyed weight in com pres sion above the Hydra- Thrust tool must be greater than the ex ten sion force of the tool.

Func tion/Drill Off Test

To in sure proper op era tion of the Hydra- Thrust tool, the fol low ing test should be per formed:

1. With the pumps off, slowly lower the BHA to con tact the bot tom of the hole.

2. Slack off to the de sired WOB, set the brake, and mark the kelly. 3. With the brake set, en gage the pumps and be gin ro ta tion. Main tain

pumps and ro ta tion at nor mal speeds for suf fi cient time to drill off no more than two feet at pre vi ously es tab lished pene tra tion rate.

4. Stop ro ta tion and dis en gage pumps, re lease brake and slack off again to de sired WOB. Mark the kelly again.

5. Pick up the string and meas ure the dis tance be tween marks. The dif fer -en tial be twe-en the marks in di cate the Hydra- Thrust Tool is op er at ing prop erly.

Hydra- Thrust™ Tool 2

(11)

Operation

Af ter tag ging bot tom; 1. Set brake.

2. En gage pumps. 3. Be gin ro ta tion.

• As the bit drills ahead, the pump will force the tool open, in or der to main tain con stant weight on bit.

4. Slack off on brake to keep the pre de ter mined weight to bit.

• As weight is ap plied, the tool will close, in or der to main tain con -stant weight on bit.

• Threads and/or shoul ders that are dirty or dam aged.

• Threads and shoul ders that are not com pletely cov ered with thread lu bri cant be fore as sem bly.

• Mis align ment of the con nec tion dur ing as sem bly or dis as sem bly.

• Ap ply ing a bend ing load when tor qu ing the con nec tion dur ing as -sem bly or dis as -sem bly.

• Leak age which would al low the con nec tion to be come dry or filled with abra sive mat ter.

Steps to pre vent gall ing:

• Po si tion the tong and vise close to the con nec tion

• Sup port and tie down the break out parts with a hold down steady rest as de scribed in dis as sem bly and as sem bly.

To Break A Stuck Con nec tion

Tap the out side sur face of the con nec tion with a ham mer while slowly un -screw ing the part. It may be help ful to back- up and un -screw the part sev eral times to work the con nec tion out, see FIG. 2.

If such meth ods fail, one part of the con nec tion can some times be ma -chined away in an at tempt to sal vage the other.

Ul ti mately, the con nec tion can be forced apart with the power tong. This may scrap both parts.

Seal De scrip tion

The HE “SU PER SEAL” has been de vel oped to with stand 20,000 PSI and up to 500°F for ac cept able pe ri ods of time. These Seals are the heart of the hy drau lic prin ci ple of jar ring. Pri mary and sec on dary seal sys tems have been de signed into the tools to guard against pre ma ture fail ure in the de tent oil sys tems.

The HE “SU PER SEAL” is a com pos ite type of Seal with each sepa rate ele ment per form ing a spe cific func tion. The split bronze\ SNE Ring is forced down the gland ta per to close the shaft to gland clear ance as pres -sure is ap plied to the Ma jor Seal. Clo -sure of the SNE Ring pre vents ex tru -sion of the SSR Ring and Ma jor Seal. The Shaft Seal Re tainer is made of glass filled Tef lon and not only acts as a spacer be tween the Ma jor Seal and SNE Ring, but pol ishes and con di tions the chrome and/or col monoy shaft as it re cip ro cates un der pres sure. The Ma jor Seal is the re sil ient seal mem ber and must hold both low and high pres sure. The Ma jor Seal is double acting when a ta pered seal groove is pro vided as shown in the il -lus tra tion be low. A Rod Wiper is po si tioned for ward of the SU PER SEALS to pre vent grease, mud and de bris from en ter ing.

Seal In spec tion

All seals (O- rings, SNE’s, SSR’s, Ma jor Seals and Rod Wip ers) should be in spected af ter steam clean ing. If any seal ap pears worn or cracked, it should auto mati cally be re placed. Oth er wise, if any seal is to be re used, it must be ab so lutely clean.

Step 1. As sem ble two SSR Rings into the deep est seal groove first. SSR Rings may be come de formed and bent, but do not break or cut. Straighten out in groove af ter in ser tion.

Step 2. Push both SSR Rings to ei ther the up or down side of the groove. Rings should fit snug and stay in se lected po si tion when pushed to one side of the groove.

Step 3. As sem ble SNE Ring (three sec tions) and hold to gether against the bevel of the groove with the SSR Rings. SNE Ring may be held in po si tion with a heavy grease.

Step 4. As sem ble sec ond SNE Ring (three sec tions) against the op po site side of the groove and hold in place with the SSR Ring. This will leave a space be -tween the SSR Rings. All Rings should stay in place. If not, re move all Rings and slightly stretch all the SSR Rings, but do not break. Re as sem ble as in Steps 1, 2 and 3.

Step 5. As sem ble the Ma jor Seal in be tween the sepa rated SSR Rings. Fold the Ma jor Seal in a U shape and in sert into the seal groove. Re lax the Seal into place.

Step 6. As sem ble the Rod Wiper into the outer most seal groove. Fold the Rod Wiper into a U shape and snap the seal into place.

Step 7. As sem ble one Hy car O- ring over the pin threaded con nec tion of the Cyl -in der and -into the O- r-ing groove, where re quired.
