JUSTICE

There are four Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, and Temperance. A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do what is morally good. It allows people to perform good acts and give the best of themselves. Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), paragraph (para) 1803

& 1805. Today’s subject is Justice.

Justice is the Cardinal moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neigh- bor (CCC para 1807). Justice is the moderation between selfishness and selflessness – between having more or having less than one’s fair share.

As virtues goes, justice isn’t the most popular…we would much rather hear about mercy or pardon, at least in regard to ourselves. Yet, justice is one of the most important virtues we can possess. There is no such thing as holiness or righteousness without justice.

Justice is a virtue that is first and foremost a positive thing. In our relationship with God, we render Him His due in the form of love, service, and gratitude as our Creator. Living justly toward God is to render Him these things perfectly.

In relation to our neighbor, “Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due” (Romans 13:7. When we respect law enforcement or pay our taxes, we are living justly.

But justice is not inherently a matter of laws and rules. Rather, our laws exist to serve justice (they should, any- way), and the justice system should serve to enforce just laws.

In scripture, we are told to “do justly” and walk humbly with God” (Micah 6:8). Justice isn’t just negative, a matter of dealing out judgment, but also a positive thing in that we render whatever is owed to God and others.

Justice is the virtue that seeks to promote fair play. It's the desire and resolve to give everyone their due. It de- mands that you reward goodness and punish evil.

THE ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON GIVING TREE IS HERE!

The Giving Trees are now set up and full of tags with gift requests from children and families in our community. By taking tags and returning the gifts, you’ll help us to keep this wonderful and generous tradition alive.

This year we have tags with gift requests for children 12 and younger; and tags with gift-card requests for children over 12. There are also tags with family gifts or gift- card requests. Gifts should be wrapped (no bows) or bagged with the tag attached.

Gift cards should be placed inside an envelope with the tag attached and the amount of the gift card noted on the front of the envelope.

Tags for items needed for the Mission are also included on the trees. Mission items should not be wrapped when returned.

Returned gifts should be placed under the trees. All gifts must be returned by December 12th so they can be distributed to the families. We cannot accept gifts after December 12th.

If you’d like to make a monetary donation, write a check to SEAS with “Giving Tree” on the memo line and drop it in the Sunday offering basket or drop it off at the office. Donations will be used to purchase missing gifts and supplies.

Thank you for your generosity!

If you have questions about the Giving Tree,

please contact Sharon Chilson at 970-391-1191 or [email protected].
