As part of Energy Day’s year-long initiative to engage students in energy and STEM education, Consumer Energy Education Foundation (CEEF), Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), University of Houston and our Energy Day partners are excited to host the 5th Annual Energy Day Academic Program (EDAP).
The Energy Day Academic Program helps to amplify existing academic competitions and events through a series of nine unique, citywide, energy-related competitions aimed to motivate, challenge and inspire young minds to seek careers in science and technology. Winners from each competition receive an award and recognition at Energy Day.

Energy City of the Future is an enterprising urban planning competition for middle and high school age students that engages problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and creativity in developing a vision for Houston in the year 2050. Student teams research and ultimately present their innovative concepts for future forms of energy production and plans for transportation, recreation, education and healthcare that enhance the city’s sustainability through energy efficiency, environmental soundness, user friendliness, and fiscal responsibility. Students are exposed to real-world challenges and explore their potential for becoming industry leaders capable of envisioning the energy and urban planning solutions of tomorrow.

Science and Engineering Fair of Houston

Since 1960, the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) has promoted the “learning and applications of science and technology” for Texas junior and senior high schools students in Houston and the surrounding 23-county area. SEFH is a regional fair, associated with the INTEL International Science & Engineering Fair and is one of the largest pre-college STEM activities in the U.S.

The 2014 Houston Affiliate National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing Award

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing builds a talent pool for the growing technical workforce and helps academic and corporate organizations celebrate diversity in computing by honoring young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing; leadership ability; academic history; and plans for post-secondary education. Aspirations in Computing is a talent development pipeline initiative of the National Center for Women & IT (NCWIT) designed to increase women's meaningful participation in computing careers by providing encouragement, visibility, community, leadership opportunities, scholarships, and internships to high potential
technically inclined young women. Aspirations in Computing is the only national level talent development program for young women in computing and information technology.
The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing program engages young women interested in technology and computing. By generating visibility for these young women in their local communities, the program encourages their continued interest in computing, attracts the attention and support of educational and corporate institutions, and emphasizes at a personal level the importance of women's participation in computing and IT.

The 2015 SeaPerch Challenge

Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages students to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles. It also teaches basic science and engineering concepts and tool safety and technical procedures. Students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to all the exciting careers that are possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean, and marine engineering.
SeaPerch Is...
A hands-on educational tool Fun and challenging
A curriculum that meets national learning standards
Integrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Teaches the teachers
Builds teamwork and inspires young minds Introduces STEM career discussions
Students learn best by doing, and during the process of building SeaPerch, they follow steps to completely assemble the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), test it, and then participate in launching their vehicles.
After the SeaPerch robot is constructed, students are encouraged to test their vehicles, deploy them on missions, and compete in a culminating event, the SeaPerch Challenge. Events at the Challenge can include:
Vehicle performance - maneuvering and recovery Innovative design (optional)
Poster presentations - oral presentations to judges

The program kicks-off each fall and culminates in the spring with a competition. The 2015 CSTEM Challenge Kick-off will take place on October 25 from 10am-12pm. The 2014 CSTEM Challenge competition will take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas, April 17-18, 2015.

The International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering, and Environment Project (I-SWEEEP), is a groundbreaking science competition open to high school students. The inaugural I-SWEEEP academic competition was launched in the spring of 2008 with a goal to bring the best and brightest math and science focused students from around the world to Houston for an Olympiad of epic academic proportions. I-SWEEEP works with local, national, and international science fair organizations to bring together the top-ranking participants and qualifying projects from these competitions. The Young Inventors’ Showcase of Houston encourages the budding inventor in every child by providing a platform for children to share and celebrate their invention ideas. Throughout the year, children are invited to participate by developing a completely original invention or making improvements to an existing invention.
