Find Hidden Words (Decoding Strategy)

Finding smaller words in larger ones.

Ask your child:

2. Read to the end of the sentence.

3. What word would make sense?

4. What does that word start with?

Chunk it Out (Decoding Strategy)

Dividing the word into smaller chunks.

Ask your child:

1. Do you see “chunks” in the word?

2. Chop the word up into “chunks” then read the “chunks”

one after the other.

3. What does that word start with?

Backtracking or rereading.

Encourage your child to think:

1. Go back and reread the sentence and maybe the sentence

before.

2. What word would make sense?

3. Does that sound like you would say it?

4. Now, reread a little faster.

Looking for word patterns.

Ask your child:

1. Does that word have a word pattern that you know? (at,

ew, ake…)

2. Does it look like a word you know? (e. g. yellow looks like

fellow)

3. Are there words with the same patterns?

4. Do they rhyme?

Comment chercher des structures de mots similaires

1. Est-ce que la structure du mot te paraît familière? (-eau,-al,-on...)

2. Est-ce que cela ressemble à un mot que tu connais? (Ex.: château ressemble à chapeau)

Say the First Sound (Decoding Strategy)

Using the first sound in a word.

Encourage your child to think:

1. What is the first letter sound in the word?

2. Read it. The word may just “Pop” into your head and out

your mouth!

1. What is the first sound, the next sound and the next…

2. Stretch out the letters to sound out the word slowly.

3. Look at the sounds you know.

1. What do you think the word might be?

2. Does that word make sense in the sentence?
