IBM, NAS and storage networking
The new IBM TotalStorage™ Network
Attached Storage 300G series is part of the overall IBM Storage Networking offering of hardware, software and services. IBM network-attached storage (NAS) products provide you with additional building blocks to increase the flexibility, efficiency and effectiveness of your storage network-ing solutions.
High-performance, dedicated NAS appliance bridging LAN and SAN
The IBM NAS 300G series is a cost-effective, innovative appliance that connects clients and servers on an IP network to a SAN, bridging the gap between LAN and SAN. These dedicated appliances perform high-speed block and file protocol conver-sions to enable the transfer of data to clients in a distributed environment. Using standard network protocols such as CIFS and NFS makes the integration and management of information easier. Access to SAN storage is more available to IP users when using the IBM NAS 300G series. This series can reduce the require-ment for direct Fibre Channel connec-tions to servers and clients that require SAN access, resulting in significant cost savings.
Designed for flexible configurations
The IBM NAS 300G series is compatible with several SAN storage appliances, which makes it ideal for providing storage access to IP users. Depending on the amount of I/O traffic on the network, the IBM NAS 300G series can support up to 500 IP-based clients per unit.2 To provide enough storage
capacity for each user, up to 11 TB of storage can be allocated for use with the IBM NAS 300G series.3 As situations
and storage requirements change, an administrator is able to reallocate storage to fit the growing needs of the organization. When requirements for storage increases, the IBM NAS 300G series can access multiple SAN devices to provide additional storage.
Some of the compatible appliances include the IBM Enterprise Storage Server™ (ESS), Modular Storage Server,
FAStT200 and FAStT500. With such flexible configurations, the IBM NAS 300G series provides administrators with the necessary tools to manage storage resources more efficiently, creating a more cost-effective storage system, and reducing total cost of ownership. By using the IBM NAS 300G series, access to existing SAN storage is a possible solution to the increasing demands for additional storage.
The IBM NAS 300G series is well suited to the following networking tasks:
•
Providing LAN clients and servers access to SAN storage for storing, retrieving and backing up data•
File-server storage consolidation•
File-server management•
Heterogeneous file sharingHigh-reliability design
The IBM NAS 300G series high-performance engines are preloaded with an operating system and additional software tuned specifically to function as a dedicated network appliance. The IBM NAS 300G series incorporates a variety of high-reliability and availability features to support 24 x 7 operations.
The IBM NAS 300G series includes a single- and a dual-engine model. The single-engine model is a great value for those wishing to extend the reach of their SAN. Clustering and failover protection is available in the engine model. The clustered dual-engine model provides advantages in fault tolerance, performance and system availability. A high-performance level is achieved by utilizing both engines for
data delivery. Each engine provides hot-swappable, redundant power supplies to support availability.
The following features, found in IBM Advanced Systems Management, are offered in the IBM NAS 300G series to help you obtain the maximum amount of uptime from your system:
•
Hot-swappable redundant power for increased availability•
Light-Path Diagnostics (LPD) for quick determination of a failed part•
Predictive Failure Analysis® monitoringon hard disk drives, CPUs, memory, fans and power supplies
•
Optional remote connect for automated call-up and dispatch of resourcesAdvanced data protection
The IBM NAS 300G series provides up to 250 True Image views of a virtual drive's file data. The virtual images are created by Persistent Storage Manager (PSM) software. True Images allow for instant restoration of files, drives and volumes in a minimum number of steps. The software connects into the file system of the NAS 300G and monitors all file reads and writes.
Features Benefits
Windows® Powered OS Preconfigured and tuned for storage-specific tasks, designed to reduce setup time and
improve performance and reliability. Windows Powered OS helps provide compatibility when deployed in Windows environments.
Failover protection Fault-tolerant design helps protect against server failure for increased uptime, providing continuous access to data.
Affordability Low initial investment and low total cost of ownership in an existing SAN environment.
True Image Improves overall availability by providing 250 levels of concurrent True Image views of the volume, including “hot” backup of online volumes.
PSM is designed to provide excellent on-disk data protection, typically allowing deleted or corrupted files to be quickly restored by the administrator or clients with proper permissions. Instead of clicking and dragging hundreds or thousands of files from one folder to the next, PSM automates the process of restoring volumes as well, allowing the administrator to restore an entire volume in a minimum number of steps.
Multiprotocol support
By providing fast and reliable data management, the IBM NAS 300G series helps to overcome the challenges of sharing, managing and protecting data in today’s high-growth infrastructures. The IBM NAS 300G series can be used in an exclusive Windows environment or in a heterogeneous environment, such as a mixed Windows and UNIX®
situation. Its multiple protocol support of CIFS (Windows), NFS (UNIX), HTTP, FTP and NetWare makes the IBM NAS 300G series compatible with a variety of clients and servers, making it an extremely flexible network appliance. Because the IBM NAS 300G series is based on Windows Powered OS, it is designed to easily integrate into a Windows environment.
Heterogeneous file sharing
Heterogeneous access to data from both Windows and UNIX environments provides ease of use and allows seamless concurrent file sharing between the Windows and UNIX users. Because the IBM NAS 300G series supports both CIFS and NFS, it is a versatile high-speed appliance. When used in a high-traffic file-server environ-ment, the IBM NAS 300G series can offload traffic from one or more heavy I/O servers.
Investment protection
The IBM NAS 300G series supports existing storage devices such as the IBM 7133.4 When used with the IBM NAS
300G series, new storage networking configurations are possible. Properly configured, the 7133 can be used in a CIFS and NFS environment on a SAN. The result is that the 7133 enables file-server storage consolidation in a CIFS and NFS environment. Storage invest-ments are extended by using the IBM NAS 300G series and by increasing access to UNIX and Windows users in a pooled storage environment. Tape backup and other SAN accessories are also supported in this configuration.
System management support
The IBM NAS 300G series is preloaded with a base operating system and software that supports:
•
Web-based GUI and Microsoft® TerminalServices for remote administration
•
Windows NT® Backup for local backup•
IBM Advanced Appliance Configuration Utility for initial configuration•
Universal Manageability Services agent and Netfinity® Director agent for remotesystem administration
•
Tivoli Storage Manager client for storage management and backups•
Tivoli SANergy for data acceleration•
Columbia Data Products Storage Manager for True Image data views creation of files, drives and volumes (backup enablement)Using the IBM advanced configuration utility allows an administrator to manage individual or large groups of IBM NAS appliances. Multiple IBM NAS 300G series units can be used simulta-neously within the same SAN network.
Administrators can view hardware configurations of remote systems in detail, and monitor usage and perfor-mance of critical components. The IBM NAS 300G series offers a Tivoli Storage Manager backup client that can be used to backup data. File level and sub-file level backup and restore is provided.
The Universal System Management allows remote administration, monitor-ing and maintenance of IBM systems. The UM Services client is included in the IBM NAS 300G series and supports UM Services Upward Integration Modules (Aims), Common Information Model (CIM), Desktop Management Interface (DMI) and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). System management platforms that are supported include Tivoli Enterprise, CA Unicenter TNG Framework and Microsoft System Management Server.
It is important to verify a user’s identity and control his or her access to data. The IBM NAS 300G series can be integrated with a range of existing security and data protection software that provides authentication and access control on a SAN.
