W. ith this Sunday, the Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, the most holy time of the year begins. Each day will have its own emphasis and I strongly encourage everyone to attend what they can throughout the week, especially the three days of the Sacred Paschal Triduum On Monday night I will be joining many of my brother priests along with Bishop Tobin and Bishop Evans and others at the Chrism Mass held at the Cathedral at 5:00 PM. We will renew our priestly promises and the Oils of the Sick and of Catechumens will be blessed and Sacred Chrism will be consecrated. On Holy Thursday we will recall the institution of the Blessed Sacrament and the Priesthood with time for adoration of the Blessed Page 2. Sacrament afterwards until midnight at the altar of repose. On Good Friday, and Holy Saturday Morning, there are no Masses celebrated anywhere in the world. The Liturgy of Good Friday itself is not a Mass even though the reception of Holy Communion takes place. Communion for that liturgy will be from what has been consecrated on Holy Thursday. We will pray the Stations of the Cross at 3:00 PM as well. The Easter Vigil on Saturday night is the mother of all vigils and as the Missal says “is the most noble of all solemnities.” It will be a full celebration offering to our God our whole attention, gifts and faculties. (3) From the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Jesus’ messianic entrance into Jerusalem 559 How will Jerusalem welcome her Messiah? Although Jesus had always refused popular attempts to make him king, he chooses the time and prepares the details for his messianic entry into the city of “his father David.” Acclaimed as son of David, as the one who brings salvation (Hosanna means “Save!” or “Give salvation!”), the “King of glory” enters his City “riding on an ass.” Jesus conquers the Daughter of Zion, a figure of his Church, neither by ruse nor by violence, but by the humility that bears witness to the truth. And so the subjects of his kingdom on that day are children and God’s poor, who acclaim him as had the angels when they announced him to the shepherds. Their acclamation, “Blessed be he who comes in the name of the Lord,” is taken up by the Church in the “Sanctus” of the Eucharistic liturgy that introduces the memorial of the Lord’s Passover. 560 Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem manifested the coming of the kingdom that the King-Messiah was going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection. (4) SVdP Announcement Every week on Saturday, we are helping an average of 10-15 families in need, sometimes even more. In particular, we are looking for cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, toiletries (shampoos, toothpaste, deodorant and soap) and any special treats for children such as cookies, juice and cereals. Thank you in advance for your support.. Page 4. The second collection this Weekend of March 28 with be for Catholic Relief Services and Operation Rice Bowl.. If you have been collecting money for the Rice Bowl and did not bring it in this weekend please do so soon. We will be sending the money to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the coming weeks.. As a side note, this collection and the reporting of it is one of the things that I am responsible for as Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. (19) Calling all Catholic Men! Pope Francis has declared this to be the year of St. Joseph. It is clear that all men need to imitate St. Joseph and to be the biological and spiritual fathers that God calls them to be, ready to hand on and defend the Catholic Faith. (20) INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUBLIC MASSES EFFECTIVE MAY 30, 2020 1. Catholics will continue to be dispensed from Sunday Mass and Holy Day Masses, until further notice. 2. Access to the Mass will be limited. • In order to be sure that we have enough space between parishioners only every other pew will be available. Families and those that live together may sit in the same pew, but in other cases there will only be two people in each pew. Once the limit is reached anyone else who comes in will have to wait for the next Mass or will have to come back another day. We may implement a simple system to regulate Mass attendance at some time in the future. 3. Hand hygiene and masks are key. • Parishioners will be expected to sanitize their hands immediately upon entry to the church. Likewise, they must wear a mask at all times, with the exception of receiving Holy Communion. 4. Singing will be limited. • There will be no choirs at this time, and there will be limited singing among the congregation. 5. Parishioners will receive Holy Communion in a safe manner. • Instructions will be given by Fr. Francesco at each Mass in the following weeks. There will be no Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at this time. Also, it is not necessary to receive Holy Communion at every Mass one attends, during this time or at any other time. 6. The Church will be sanitized after every Mass and parish event. • This will take time and that is why the Mass schedule for Sundays has to be changed for now. 7. Budget envelopes will be submitted as you leave. Page 7. • Baskets will be present on both sides near the exit of the Church. 7. Avoid personal contact with anyone. • The sign of peace, which is always optional, will remain suspended. Even though it saddens me to say this, please do not congregate before or after Mass during this time. 8. Those who are sick must stay home. • Please be cautious, and when in doubt stay home. 1.
