When you write a story, you usually use the past tense, because you are writing about something that hap-pened in the past.

This paragraph has many mistakes. The verbs should be past tense. Rewrite this paragraph, and change the verbs to past tense.

Yesterday, I walk to school and I see a dog and a cat. The dog run after the cat, and the cat look scared. The dog is very fast, and it catch the cat. The cat make a loud noise, but the dog don’t hurt the cat. The dog just lick the cat and play with the cat. Finally, the cat stand up and hit the dog in the face. The cat ran away and the dog look very surprised. The dog then go to raccoon. The raccoon is eat ice cream and it enjoy the fla-vor, which is chocolate. The dog try to eat the ice cream but the raccoon bite him. The dog yelp.

The dog then decided to go to a skunk. It think the skunk is nicer than the raccoon, but it is not. After be-ing ask many stupid questions about its background, the skunk spray the dog with its terrible scent. The dog learn its lesson. Don’t be too friendly with strange strangers. It is really funny

Assignment #3 Exercise on Adverbs

You know that adjectives are words that modify nouns. Adverbs are words that can modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. In this section, we will focus on adverbs that modify verbs.

I run slowly. (“slowly” modifies “run.”) He writes neatly. (“neatly” modifies “writes.”)

Please drive carefully. (“carefully” modifies “drive.”)

*Most (but not all) adverbs end in “-ly.”

Part 1. Look at the sentences below. Can you find the adverbs? Circle the adverbs, and draw an arrow to the verbs that they modify.

1. Derek rides his bicycle very quickly.

2. Monica talks too quietly, so I can’t hear what she is saying. 3. I accidentally hit James, so I said I was sorry.

Comparative Adjectives

1. You can also add –er to adjectives. “-er” means “more.” (If you use “adjective + -er, you have to use “than,” too.)

Assignment #6 Exercise on Verbs

(Present Continuous)

We use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about things that are happening right now.

To talk about right now, you have to use a “Be verb” (am, is, are) and a verb+ing: I am going to the city

reading books playing baseball. talking too loudly. watching a movie. jumping and singing. walking slowly.

We use the Past Continuous Tense to talk about something that was happening at a specific time in the past. To use the Past Continuous Tense, you need a [Past Tense Be Verb] + [Verb+ing]:

We often use the Past Continuos Tense with the word “when,” to talk about two things that happened at the same time:

I [past continuous] when [past tense]:

I was talking on the phone when the doorbell rang. He was eating dinner when the phone rang. She was writing her homework when she fell asleep. It was raining when I went to school.

You were running while it rained.

They were playing baseball when I saw them.

We were fighting when my mother came home.

To use the Past Continuous Tense, you need a [Past Tense Be Verb] + [Verb+ing]:

We also use the Past Continuos Tense with the words “while” or “as,” to talk about two things that were happening at the same time:
