August 2011
Robert Tamson - Fly Fishing South
Texas
Robert’s program at the August meeting will be on saltwater fly fishing opportunities on the flats of the Laguna Madre as well as the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas. He has extensive experience fly fishing these waters by spending the last several summers living in South
Padre Island, Texas. He will share with us hints on how to fish for Redfish, Sea Trout, Tarpon, Snook and other fun fish found in South Texas without the need of hiring a guide. He may also talk a little about the west coast of Florida’s fly fishing opportunities on a budget, also unguided.
A native Californian, Robert has been flinging flies at fish since age 11. For the last 12 years, Robert has held the position as Director of both the Wilderness Unlimited Fly fishing School and the Becoming an Outdoors Woman of California fly fishing programs. Now semi-retired from his real job as a Real Estate Broker,
He puts in over 150 days on the water annually in both fresh and salt water. Robert is also
seriously involved in completing both a fly fishing film “Redfish Summer” and working on his first book “Fly Fishing Naked”, coming soon! Don’t worry, he’s not a fly fishing nudist! …the book will be a discussion on the Zen philosophy of “less is more”
in relation to our sport!
California Coastal Cleanup Day!
Tracy Fly Fishers will be doing our part on Saturday,
September 17.
Any willing volunteers can meet us at Whiskey Slough Marina from 9 am until noon.
Bring food and drink for a post cleanup potluck BBQ!
Whiskey Slough Marina is located at 3401 s. Whiskey Slough Rd. off of Hwy 4.
More info at this month’s meeting!
The Prez Sez
I hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy family and friends this summer. August is here and school will soon be starting again, so grab your young'uns and head out for one more trip to the water. Doing so will re-enforce the bonds of family and instill a sense of responsibility in our children as they observe how we respect the outdoors.
Speaking of which, we have one or two more official Fish Outs coming up. The annual trek to the Pit River is set for the end of September so grab a fishing buddy and get signed up. This is a fee based trip and if you sign up you must pay at that time. We are indebted to the time our Fishmiesters take to plan these trips and we want everyone to be treated fairly.
Also, look for more information at the meeting on Wednesday night about this and possible other trips.
We have started talking about the Installation dinner already! It will be on 07 January 2012. If you have fly boxes or other items for the raffles and auctions, get them to the Raffle Chairs as soon as possible. This is our premiere activity and your support makes the club run throughout the year.
The TFF is planning a
"Clean Up Day" on the Delta on 17 September. Location and times will be announced at the meeting so lets join together to clean up some of our favorite fishing holes. When I go out on the delta I almost always fill a bag or two with trash. It only makes a small dent in the overall picture but it makes a
difference in how I feel when I drive home.
I will also have information on a new Fund raising opportunity to share with the club at the
meeting on Wednesday.
Looks like you better come and bring a friend to hear what is happening in the TFF.

Saturday, August 27 at 9:00am.
A great way to meet your fellow club members and maybe even hook-up for a fishing trip.
25th Tracy Dried Bean Festival
The Tracy Dried Bean Festival is coming September 10 and 11 and the Tracy Fly Fishers will have a booth at the Festival.
This will be a good opportunity for the club to present itself to the community and gain new members.
Members will be needed to assist in setup and take down of the booth as well as staffing during festival hours.
Sign up sheets will be available at this month’s meeting, please come out and present our fine club.

We stay in comfortable PG&E cabins on the Pit River and the club has the option of getting the cabins for a full week. Look for more information at the meetings and future newsletters.
Alpine Lake-Ben Byng will be the fishmeister for a weekend trip to Alpine Lake Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Alpine Lake Resort has tent cabins for rent and we can carpool and pitch in for food. Sign ups will be at the meeting.

FISHING LINE RECYCLING
Monofilament Fishing Line can entangle and kill wildlife, and cause boat damage. It's NOT biodegradable and can remain in the environment for over 600 years. Fluorocarbon is worse.
Discarded fishing line accounts for many tragic wildlife deaths due to entanglement. Wildlife may suffer from loss of limbs from line entanglement and even death from gangrenous infection, or ingestion of the line. Fishing line discarded in our waterways also fouls boat propellers which are a serious litter problem, especially around boat ramps and fishing areas.
Even when we dispose the line in trash bins it still goes to the landfill which creates the same hazards for wildlife, unless it is cut into small pieces. One solution to the problem is to have recycling containers available to boaters and fishermen to properly discard their used line.
The California Department of Boating and Waterways and the California Coastal Commission’s Boating Clean and Green program, the Keep the Delta Clean and the BoatU.S Foundation have placed containers at many locations throughout the State. Please check the list of line recycling container locations that participate in recycling monofilament line.
The complete list can be located at: http://www.coastal.ca.gov/ccbn/trashdebris.html
