FLY LINES &

FISH TALES

This month's meeting will feature guest speaker Mark Wong and Surf Perch

Fishing. Mark took up the saltwater angling sport not long after graduating from one of Ken Hanley's Surf Zone clinics in the early 1990's. Mark brings a wealth of experience and

knowledge to the fly fishing community. In his years of plying the surf along the Bay Area's sandy coastline, he has caught and released a variety of saltwater game fish species using a wide assortment of fly fishing gear and techniques.

Mark will cover the following subject areas:

 Personal observations made on the sport of fly fishing in the Bay Area surf

 Important characteristics of the marine

environment, including

shore terrain, hydrology, tides & weather patterns

 Information about the various game fish species commonly encountered in the local surf

 Recommendations on what equipment &

apparel to use for fly fishing the beaches

 Understanding the latest beach & surf conditions before heading out to the coast

 Strategies, tactics &

concepts for fly fishing the surf from the beaches

 On-line references to help guide the surf angler

The Prez Sez

September is here and the weather has started to change, days are getting shorter and the kids are back in school. And the Tracy Fly Fishers have been busier than ever!!

First of all, I want to thank Rick Clemens for all the work he did in setting us up at the Tracy Bean Festival and for the members how helped out at the booth; Steve Potter, Steve Perriera, Mark McLean, Bob Kiffen, Nancy Champagne, Rod Buchanan, Jeff Fadden, Pat Ferguson, Bruce Germolus and Stan Elijah. It is because of your enthusiasm and dedication that we were able to add ten new memberships to the club!! I myself am a product of the Bean Festival so it is exciting to see that it is still productive. So when you come out to the meeting this

Wednesday be on the lookout for the following New Members and their families.

*Eric and Noah Denoyer, *Daniel Lord, Steffen Masters, *Bien Doan, Jeff Nunes, David Okamoto, Don and Bertha Hobler, Carl Sanchez, Mark Minten, Bob Gallegos

To those who have just joined let me Welcome you into the club and invite you to become involved in all of its activities. The TFF is a great group of people who share their talents and interests with everyone from 8 to 80,

whether it’s on the water or off.

I look forward to getting to know you and seeing the talents that you bring to the club!

Many thanks also to Mike Tidwell for organizing the Clean Up Day at Whiskey Slough this morning. This was a fun activity and there was, unfortunately, no shortage of trash to be found as we filled the dumpster in a couple of hours. Thanks to Corey Cate, Bruce Germolus, Steve Holtzclaw, Chuck Robbins, Mike Tidwell and Stan Elijah for your help.

There are already thoughts and ideas about how the next Clean up can be improved upon. Look for pictures on the Facebook page and the newsletter.

It was an enjoyable time and

afterward we enjoyed some great food and conversation at the bar and grill at Whiskey Slough Marina.

The Pit River Fish out started this weekend and I hope that all who are there or going have a great time and bring back another chapter of great stories to add to the archives. Don't forget the pictures!! Thanks to Dan Freeman for getting the cabins and helping to arrange the trip.

So as you can see, the club has been busy this month! The holidays are coming and that means the Installation Dinner and Crab feed is not far away. January 7th is the date and we will definitely be looking for assistance in getting everything ready for a great night of fellowship and fundraising. Contact me at

[email protected] if you would like to help out.

Enjoy the Fall fishing,

Stan

Tracy Bean Festival

Rick Clemens did a bang up job organizing the Tracy Flyfishers booth at the 25th Tracy Dried Bean Festival. Over the two days of the festival, dozens of people were exposed to the Tracy Flyfishers and learned about our club. The club gained 10 new members and their families and hopefully more new folks will come check out our meetings in the coming months. Rick and crew sold whirly gigs, neck coolers and raffle tickets for a fly rod.

Great job Rick!

Conservation News

Tracy Flyfishers participated in the National Coastal Cleanup Saturday, September 17 by

organizing a cleanup around Whiskey Slough Marina. Mike Tidwell did the footwork to organize the cleanup and it was a very successful event. Bruce Germolus, Corey Cate, Chuck Robbins, Stan Elijah, Stephen Holtzclaw and Mike Tidwell met at the Marina at 9:00 am and armed with garbage bags and a rolling trashcan we made quite a dent in the trash around Whiskey Slough as you can see from the before and after photos of the trash dumpster. No real treasures were found but Stan did retrieve a spare tire that looked almost new. After the cleanup we retreated to the Whiskey Slough Marina Bar and Grill where cold beers and lunches were consumed with gusto!

Great job on organizing the cleanup, Mike!

CSPA, Coalition Oppose Efforts to Weaken Timber Harvest Rules

Posted on September 14, 2011 by Bill Jennings

CSPA and a coalition of environmental organizations, including Sierra Club, Battle Creek Alliance, Center for Biological Diversity, Central Coast Forest Watch, Ebbetts Pass Forest Watch, Klamath Forest Alliance, Center for Sierra Nevada Conservation, Environment Now, Pelican Network, Foothills Conservancy,

Cascade Action Now, Forests Forever and Lassen Forest Preservation Group have requested that the State Water Resources Control Board pull a controversial proposal to weaken requirements in the timber

harvesting waiver from the Board’s September 19,20 meeting agenda. Runoff from timber harvesting activities has great potential to harm fisheries and water quality.

The proposed modifications would eliminate requirements for timber companies to submit reports of waste

discharge and associated enrollment fees for some 667 timber harvest plans that represent serious threats

to water quality. The proposed modifications have not received a public hearing before the Central Valley Regional Board and have not benefited from a public comment period before the State Board. The letter requests that the State Board postpone consideration until a future Board meeting and reopen the public comment period so the proposed order may receive the careful, informed consideration that is needed to protect the public trust resources. CSPA, Winnemem Wintu sue Westlands over contract renewals

Submitted by Dan Bacher on Tue, 09/13/2011 - 4:38pm by Dan Bacher

The California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA), Friends of the River, North Coast River Alliance, Save the American River Association and Winnemem Wintu Tribe have filed a lawsuit against Westlands Water District and its two water distribution districts over the renewal of six interim water service contracts.

The action, filed 25 August 2011, concerns six Central Valley Project (CVP) contracts providing up to over one million acre feet of water annually from the Delta. The groups and Tribe say water exports out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta are a principle reason for the decline of Central Valley salmon and Delta fish populations.

Westlands, et al, claims the contracts are exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). A call to a spokesperson for Westlands regarding their rationale for claiming a CEQA exemption had not been returned at press time.

The coalition disagrees strongly with the CEQA exemption for the contracts. The lawsuit asks for: injunctive relief, restraining the defendant from carrying out the project; a writ of

mandate, setting aside contract approval; and declaratory relief, declaring the contracts to be unlawful, according to Bill Jennings, Executive Director/Chairman of CSPA.

TheTracy Fly Fishers’ Board of Directors meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Safeway grocery store’s Community Room at 1801 W. 11th Street. The next board meeting will be held on April 6, 2011. The Board meetings are open to all TFF members. Board Meetings begin at 7 p.m. Stop by and see what goes on “behind the scenes” of your club!
