BUSINESS

Headquartered in San Diego, ScaleMatrix offers datacenter hosting, private cloud, co-location, and data protection services to local and international customers. Conceptualized in 2010, the company is experiencing rapid growth.

CHALLENGE

ScaleMatrix’s clients need exceptional data availability and service continuity. The company required a recovery management solution for physical and virtual environments and a robust platform for simple cloud management.

SOLUTION

CA ARCserve solutions form the basis of a ScaleMatrix’s managed data security service that uses cloud storage to minimize costs. The company also uses CA AppLogic to support its private cloud services.

BENEFIT

ScaleMatrix can help customers reduce costs, comply with regulations and bring new services to market faster, while maximizing its profitability and supporting business growth.

Business

Solving business challenges with innovative IT solutions

ScaleMatrix offers cutting-edge IT solutions that enable organizations to reduce costs, increase agility and safeguard compliance.

The US-based company provides datacenter hosting, co-location, private cloud and data protection services to more than 100 customers ranging from SMEs (small to medium enterprises) to large businesses and government organizations. These services are delivered from datacenters in San Diego and Texas.

Since its inception in 2010, ScaleMatrix has enjoyed rapid business growth. The company has

expanded from six to 60 employees within a year, and recently extended its San Diego datacenter from 50,000 to 96,000 square feet. ScaleMatrix plans to open more facilities in the near future to meet customer demand for its services.

Challenge

Meeting customer demand for exceptional data availability

The need for effective disaster recovery was highlighted in 2011 when Southern California suffered a series of prolonged power outages. “The incident acted as a wake-up call for many businesses, as it impacted their ability to continue operating,” explains Heller. “A few hours of downtime may be manageable, but beyond this, organizations’ operations are signifi cantly impacted.”

To ensure ScaleMatrix’s services would provide the business continuity demanded by its clients, the company needed to extend its disaster recovery capabilities. Heller comments, “As customers have differing needs, we didn’t want to offer a one-size-fi ts-all model. We needed a recovery management solution that could deliver varying levels of data protection across both traditional hosting models and the cloud.”

As well as enabling rapid recovery, ScaleMatrix also wanted to simplify the provisioning and

management of its private cloud services. The company recognized that the most important factors for customers were cost, ease of management and scalability. Heller comments, “We needed a platform for our cloud services that would enable customers to start small and incrementally grow services as required.”

Solution

Seamless recovery management

To provide comprehensive disaster recovery capabilities for both traditional hosting and private cloud customers, ScaleMatrix uses CA ARCserve Backup, D2D, Replication and High Availability. “We selected the CA Technologies solutions as they are scalable, easy to confi gure and integrate, and require minimal support,” adds Heller.

The company launched a data security managed service founded on the solutions in August 2011 based on customer demand. As Heller explains, “We have integrated the CA Technologies solutions with cloud storage offerings and an appliance-based solution to provide exceptional data availability at an affordable cost.”

The level of availability can be varied according to individual customer or system needs, from simple backup with CA ARCserve Backup to real-time replication with CA ARCserve High Availability and various options in between.

“Some customers outsource a particular critical service to us to deliver, while others rely on us to safeguard the availability of their entire IT infrastructure,” comments Heller. “The level of recovery management depends upon the criticality of the data being protected.”

As well as using the CA Technologies solutions as part of its customer offerings, ScaleMatrix replicates its own systems and data between its San Diego and Texas datacenters. “With rapid access to mirrored systems and data from a datacenter many miles away, the impact of local events such as power outages or natural disasters can be mitigated,” explains Heller.

In total the CA Technologies solutions protect more than 100 terabytes of ScaleMatrix and customer data across a wide range of systems. Recovery time varies from up to a day for those customers using basic backup services to microseconds for those with real-time replication and failover.

Rapid and scalable cloud provisioning and management

ScaleMatrix also relies on CA Technologies solutions for the basis of its private cloud services. As Heller explains, “When we fi rst established the company, we made a signifi cant investment in CA AppLogic as it offered the scalability, ease of management and rapid provisioning we needed.”

The CA Technologies solution is used to virtualize server infrastructure and manage cloud services. “Using CA AppLogic, we can establish and scale services very quickly,” asserts Heller. “The platform automatically allocates CPU, memory, storage and network connectivity so we don’t need to manually confi gure hardware on a regular basis.”

The company has ‘wrapped’ a number of applications, including the CA ARCserve solutions, to create pre-defi ned services that can be provisioned via CA AppLogic’s drag and drop interface.

ScaleMatrix’s expertise with CA AppLogic has led it to become a key training partner for CA Technologies helping other customers and partners take advantage of the solution.
