Preparation of a New Planning Scheme

Proposed Community Engagement Approach

Proposed Community Engagement Approach

The preparation of a new planning scheme is a significant and complex undertaking, particularly for a dynamic and diverse area such as the Sunshine Coast.

High population growth, multi-faceted planning issues, complex environmental and development considerations and an engaged local community all contribute to the need for a comprehensive community engagement strategy to support the new planning scheme project.

Council is committed to ensuring that the community plays a meaningful role in the preparation of the new planning scheme.

Council is also keen to utilise engaging technologies and tools to build community knowledge and encourage involvement.

Sunshine Coast Council Media Release 22 December 2020

QUARRY CONTRACT BOOSTS LOCAL ECONOMY

Sunshine Coast Council awarded an $8.5 million contract to local company Black Cat Civil to support quarry services at Image Flat and Dulong.

The two-year contract starts early 2021 and provides mobile crushing and screening services.

The contract was awarded last month following a robust procurement process to achieve the best quality outcome and value-for-money for ratepayers.

Black Cat Civil is a certified member of Supply Nation. The head office is in Nambour and the company works throughout Australia.

Sunshine Coast Division 10 Councillor David Law said council supported our growing region through the operation of quarries at Image Flat Road, Image Flat and Sherwell Road, Dulong.

“I am really pleased that a local Nambour company Black Cat Civil has won this competitive contract, it shows that the council’s local procurement policy is really working,” Cr Law said.

“They will be crushing, scalping, blending and screening approximately 350,000 tonnes per annum of rhyolite and basalt shot rock for a variety of sizes and products,” he said.

Cr Law said material extracted from the quarries was available to the construction industry and the general public.

Material is used for a range of purposes including road base, landscaping, drainage material, footpaths, driveways and to prepare a base for construction.

Contact the quarry sales office on 0437 734 913 for information on products.

OUR FUTURE WASTE SURVEY

Our future waste

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedinEmail this link

Have your say on the future of waste and resource recovery on the Sunshine Coast, including a third bin to capture food and garden waste (FOGO) by completing the online survey (External link).

Around half of the material in Sunshine Coast household general waste bins could be diverted from landfill and recycled.

Sunshine Coast Council is therefore looking at how we collect waste from households to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfill and achieve recycling targets outlined in the Queensland Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy.

We are very interested in your views on the introduction of a third bin for collection of food organics and garden organics. The

frequently asked questions explain how a third bin may work for our region.

Your input will help inform council on how waste is managed across the region into the future.

(3)

We want to know what changes you’d be willing to make for a sustainable future.

Fill out the survey before 5pm, Tuesday 2 March, 2021.

Overview

To support a thriving community now and into the future it is critical that we manage our energy, waste and natural resources efficiently and sustainably, which is why council is working through actions from our Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy 2015 – 2025.

These actions require us to explore how waste and resource recovery on the Sunshine Coast will look in the future and we are seeking community input.

Though this survey, we hope to gain ideas and feedback to help guide any future changes in how council collects and processes your waste.

We are exploring options to change the current waste collection system.

Tell us your views on a third bin for food and garden waste.

MAPLETON CHOIR CONCERTS

I would like to request a Date Claimer entry for the Pop Up News for our planned Mapleton Choir Concerts for May 2021.

We are planning 3 Twilight concerts again on Friday

22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May - times yet

to be decided.

Our concerts in early December 2020 were a great success despite the Covid restrictions in numbers for attendance and we are hoping for ongoing community support this year. Attendance will possibly be limited again depending on government restrictions however I will be in touch again closer to time with final details.

Thank you again for your support and for your great

ongoing community encouragement with the Pop Up News.

Kind regards,

Robyn Gray - Secretary Mapleton Choir

The

forest kingfisher

is a species of kingfisher in the subfamily Halcyoninae. It is found in Indonesia, New Guinea and coastal eastern and northern Australia.

Scientific name: Todiramphus macleayii

A forest living kingfisher with a white belly and vibrant multitone blue wings and back. Note bright white spot in front of the eyes that does not extend over the eye.

In flight it shows diagnostic large white wing panels. Often perches prominently, including on powerlines and fence posts.

The Forest Kingfisher's diet consists of invertebrates, including beetles, bugs, spiders and grasshoppers. It also will eat insect larvae, small lizards, frogs and worms. It typically hunts from low bare branches or telegraph wires. Most prey are caught with sally -pouncing, often landing with a thud caused by the breast and legs hitting the ground while seizing prey with the bill. They also engage in sally-hunting, striking the prey from low branches or the air. On return to a perch, the prey is killed by banging it against a hard surface, often dislodging indigestible portions such as insects' wings. Hunting takes place during daylight, but with little activity during the hottest part of the day.

Grevillea ‘Golden Lyre’

is a hybrid originating from Fairhill Nursery in Queensland and is a hybrid between G.

formosa and G. ‘Honey Gem’ (a Queenslad hybrid, common in cultivation).

It was unfortunate that it was called ‘Golden Lyre’ as it cannot be registered with the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority for there is already a Grevillea ‘Poorinda Golden Lyre’ registered. Be sure of which one you are purchasing, as they are very different plants.

It is 1.5metres high by about 3metres wide and is stunning when it flowers during late summer and autumn. The many bright yellow terminal flowers can be up to 20 to 25cms long and are literally dripping with nectar.

Grevillea ‘Cooroora Cascade’

, a low growing sport of Grevillea ‘Golden Lyre’. G. ‘Cooroora Cascade’ has all the

attributes of this parent, but it only grows about half the height.

An example can be sighted behind the hairdresser at Mapleton.

There is a convenient collection point which is a wheelie bin placed at the foot of the entry stairs. This bin can be distinguished from others as it has a round hole in its roof where you can pop-in the recycle items.

From Your Local Disaster Management Sub-Group

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR A BUSHFIRE?

Because of its rural location, relatively small size, location on the crest of the Blackall Range, and extensive sur- rounding bush on 3 sides, Mapleton faces a significant risk from bushfires. At any time, the threat depends on forecast wind conditions, temperatures, and humidity, along with the nature of the surrounding topography and vegetation in terms of its inflammability and fire load.

The Bureau of Meteorology uses a 6-level Fire Danger Rating based on these factors to issue warnings of poten- tial bushfire danger for different localities on a daily ba- sis. In order of increasing severity these are Low- Moderate, High, Very High, Severe, Extreme and Cata- strophic. See -

https://www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/Pages/FDR.aspx

Each of these forecast ratings calls for a different re- sponse which will also depend on your own location rela- tive to the bush and the vulnerability of your property to fire.

All residents of Mapleton should be familiar with this sys- tem and, considering their own vulnerability, for each lev- el of Fire Danger decide -

1) What they will do if such conditions are forecast 2) What they will do if a fire is reported upwind of them.

If a Very High Fire Danger or worse is forecast, all resi- dents should make preparations to reduce the risk to their properties.

Furthermore, if you live adjacent to the bush or within 2 or 3 houses of the bush you need to be aware that under these conditions if a fire is reported upwind of you then you may need to evacuate and be prepared for this.

For more detailed information of bushfire preparedness see -
