- Your display will include key information about the factor that shapes personality development.

- You can design it any way your group decides. ( : - Write at the bottom of the poster if this represents a Nurture or Nature factor

Now Let’s Talk Genetics!

Article: How your Genes affect Addiction

Finish reading the following sections of the article –

 Future Treatments

 What Affects the Risk for Addiction?

 Risk and Protective Factors for Addiction

(5)

Answer the 3 questions in the packet – write answers on the back.

Then, ANSWER QUESTION #4 – MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU… ( :

1. Explain the difference between a protective factor and a risk factor for addiction. Give one example of each.

2. Suppose a person has no family history of drug

addiction and has strong bonds with his or her parents.

Is it guaranteed that the person will not become

addicted to drugs or alcohol themselves? Support your answer with evidence from the texts.

3. Suppose a person has uncontrollable risk factors for addiction, such as a genetic history of the disease. How can the person reduce his or her own risk? Explain at least two specific actions that can be taken.

4. MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU:

Go through the risk factors and the protective factors in the packet and circle ALL that apply to you.

a. If experts say it’s “50% genetic and 50%

environmental”, what does this mean for you

personally? Like reflect on your genetics and your environment – what do you think your personal percentages are?

(for me, it was more like 25% genetic (mom, but not dad exhibits some addictive behaviors), and 75% environmental (I was very much around alcohol during and after college, and peer pressure/FOMO factored in big-time)

b. Do an honest reflection – are your behaviors or

choices setting you up for success or could they

potentially be setting you up on a path toward

addiction?

(6)

c. And say you do “flip the addict switch” in your

brain at a young age… you may then have to fight

this, for the rest of your life. What could be some

healthy things to be addicted to, instead of drugs

and/or alcohol?

(7)

and how she was affected, both short and long term. You may compare her to Anna and Isabelle from the textbook.

In the second part of the analysis, tell whether Nurture or Nature played a more significant role in shaping her personality. Use specific examples from your notes.

In the third part of the analysis, provide your own emotional response to viewing this film. How did observing the way she was studied make you feel?

What left you unnerved? Did it have a happy ending? Have you heard other examples of feral children?

For a five, do extra research into other cases of feral children or children raised in isolation and draw some deeper conclusions about human nature.

Examples)

Marina Chapman, Oxana Malaya, Kamala & Amala, John Ssebunya, Shamdeo, Prava the Bird Boy, Leopard Boy, The Wild Girl of Champagne, The Syran Gazelle Boy, The Bear Girl, Wild Peter, Jaycee Dugard, David/Louise Turpin &

their 13 children
