Reading Benchmarking: Word Recognition List 2

Administration Guide

Benchmarking Assessments are modified performance tools used to provide data on selected skill areas. The Word Recognition assessment provides a baseline measurement of words read from three levels of Dolch/Fry’s high-frequency words.

Suggested Administration:

Quarterly or two times a year

Reading Benchmarking assessments provide baseline information on areas of reading that are fundamental in learning to read. These assessments are appropriate for students who are early readers.

Scoring:

Each performance assessment yields a raw score and interpretative information.

• Mastery

• Instructional

• Emerging

• Review and revise goals Directions for Administration:

Words in the List 2 Word Recognition Assessment are high-frequency words from the combined Dolch/Fry first word list. Two versions of this assessment are available. In Version A, a word is presented and the student will read the word. Responses are recorded as correct/incorrect. A choice of three words are presented in Version B. A word is named for the student to select/indicate from this choice of three words.

• Eighteen words are presented in the assessment. Each correct assessment question is scored with one point. The online assessment will automatically move to the next question/option after a response is selected. A button is on the screen for the examiner to mark as correct or incorrect in Version A. In Version B, the word choice is selected on the screen.

• Response options may NOT be presented verbally since this would alter the intent of the assessment.

• For some students, the online version may not be a reliable way to present word choices. A hard copy of the words may be needed. Both Version A and B forms are included in this document.

• The assessment will discontinue after four consecutive errors.

Using Assessment Results:

Reading Performance Assessments are scored according to the student’s response when reading words or selecting from a choice of words.

Each area yields a raw score that is interpreted in this way:

• 18 – 15 Mastery Mastery indicates that the student should apply the current skills into higher-level reading strategies.

• 14 – 10 Instructional Incorporate routine skill instruction to strengthen this reading skill area.

• 9 – 6 Emerging Emerging reading skills in this skill area may be developed through structured learning tasks.

• 5 – 0 Review/Revise Review the student’s present level and revise goals to more appropriately address learning potential.

Results from this assessment will give teachers an indication of the word lists that are applicable for the student within the Unique monthly lessons. In the Goal Setting Report View, the educational team may select word recognition skills that should be addressed as IEP goals if this will be a focus within instructional tasks. If a teacher wants to evaluate the student on all words within a list of Dolch/Fry’s words, a complete list is provided in the Instructional Tools section of the ULS Dashboard.

The instructions and screen pages for the Word Recognition List 2 Assessment may be printed for administration offline. Please enter the Word Recognition assessment information through the Unique GPS, as this enables data to be stored and saved appropriately for the student record.
