To change the views of young people about the science and technology, Dr. Dean Kamen, an inventor and entrepreneur , founded FIRST (For Innovation and Respiration of Science and Technology) in 1989 to engage high school students in science and technology activities through building sophisticated heavy-duty robots and participating in FRC. Since the technology used in FRC is quite advanced for most high school students to understand, FIRST asks high school robotic teams to work with outside professional engineers. When asked by the two high school teams for help, Professors who were in charge of the daily operations of MTC saw this was an excellent opportunity for City Tech students to learn to serve as the “outside professional engineers ”, using what they have learnt in MTC to help high school robotic teams to build the robots. Since each high school robot team was given six weeks to finish building the robot for the FRC, it put a lot of pressure for the college students to design, build, test, and program the robots in such a short time frame. This paper documented some details of these activities and demonstrated how college students benefited from this unique opportunity to practice engineering.

AbsTRACT Compulsory high school education is a process that has been developing, with different characteristics, in some Latin American countries. In Mexico, the H. Congress of the Union modified the 3rd and 31st articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States to extend compulsory education to high school from 2012. Although there is a growth of enrollment in this level of education, many young people do not attend high school or they interrupt their studies. With the purpose of describing some characteristics of this process in Mexico, I present reflections that emerged from a recently concluded research in dialogue with the current bibliography. It is a study that analyzes, from an ethnographic perspective, the accreditation of subjects in everyday life at Colegio de Bachilleres high school in Mexico City. We claim that the credit system is affected by a mandate that is present in current educational policies: to improve young people’s indexes of access to school, enrollment, and passing courses in high school. The aim of this paper is to identify challenges for the institutions that are envisioned in the future.

A bit more specifically, the project was origi- nally created in 1990 by the author at the request of the local Volusia County school system. The initial objective was to motivate `at risk' junior high school students, those who were performing poorly in spite of high scores on IQ and similar tests. A week-long summer science camp program was set up on the Embry-Riddle campus which included the design project integrated into a broad introduction to aviation. Students who were not at risk responded vigorously to announcements of the program, so more sessions were added. The project was sufficiently popular that a slightly more sophisticated project was created for two FAA-sponsored high school Aviation Career Edu- cation programs later in the summer. By January, 1994, the project has been delivered 16 times by the author, about evenly split between students and science/aerospace education teachers. And it has been presented at least nine times by other col- leagues at ERAU. It has always proven to be a great success. Students at all levels show a high level of interest and enthusiasm, and very apparent pride of ownership in the finished product. Feed- back from their teachers and parents has been frequent and highly complimentary. I also found it difficult to find help and resources that could address my issues of everyday anxiety. I was not looking for a solution to eliminate my anxiety, but rather strategies to adequately manage my anxiety while maintaining normalcy in my daily social and school life. Therefore, as the researcher in this qualitative study, I felt the need to examine the experience of living with everyday anxiety during adolescence in order to provide a vehicle for those experiencing similar situations as mine to share their stories. It is crucial for healthcare workers, teachers and families to understand the lived experience of everyday anxiety from the perspective of adolescents before it evolves into a mental health illness such as generalized anxiety or major depressive disorder in order to provide the best care to meet their needs (Brookman & Sood, 2006).

The Effects of Teacher Experience on the Workplace Readiness of High School Students

Over the last decade attention has been placed on the emergent gap between education and the workplace. In response, school systems have provided instructional opportunities such as career pathways to better prepare students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to be workplace ready. This dissertation sought to review two factors considered essential to this endeavor—teacher experience in business and industry and career and technical education (CTE). In doing so, this causal-comparative study examined 594 high school students in a northwest Georgia school district to see if there was a difference in the ACT WorkKeys® scores of students completing a career pathway taught by an instructor with two or more years of experience in business and industry and students completing a career pathway taught by an instructor without two or more years of experience in business and industry. Additionally, there was an examination to see if a difference exists between the scores of students completing a CTE career pathway and students completing a non-CTE career pathway. Students took the ACT WorkKeys® assessment in Applied Mathematics, Locating Information, and Reading for Information with their results reported as scale and level scores. Though no statistically significant differences were concluded related to the effects of teacher experience on the workplace readiness of high school students, this study serves as an indicator that workplace preparation needs to be further addressed to ensure a viable workforce in the 21 st century.
