First of all, increaing use of some informal estimation approaches, such as guessing and intuition, have been found to be related to increases in the number of large projects that overrun their estimates [17]. In addition, more structured bottom-up experiential approaches can potentially suffer from an optimistic bias due to estimators extrapolating from an estimate of only a portion of the system [3][9]. In one study that evaluated experiential estimates, optimism was demonstrated [10]. However, another study showed that experiential estimates are pessimistic, with the estimators estimating more than the actual [16]. In any case, both over and underestimation, as noted in [17], can have negative ramifications on a project and its staff. Furthermore, it has been shown in one study that the accuracy and variation of experiential-based estimates is affected significantly by application and estimation experience of the estimators, with more experienced estimators performing better [10]. However, in a given organization, it will seldom be possible to find available, highly experienced estimators for every new project. Given the prevalent reliance on informal approaches to cost estimation, many of these estimates would not be easily repeatable either even if the most experienced estimators were available.

A PPIAF framework and a SERVQUAL framework are adapted to assess product performance and service quality, respectively. AHP is used as weighting method. The survey results provide ideas for improving the current product service system of generator set distributors. Further studies must use detailed measure weighting methods and implement the product service system board to assess service quality.

In combination with the similarity method used (cosine), this means the scores are not valid ratings. Moreover, MyMediaLite’s recommenders outperform the rest. There is also difference between using a cross validation strategy or a ratio par- tition, along with global or per user conditions. Specifically, better values are obtained for the combination of global cross validation, and best RMSE values are found for the per user ratio partition. These results can be attributed to the amount of data available in each of these combinations: whereas global splits may leave users out of the evaluation (the training or test split), cross validation ensures that they will always appear in the test set. Performance differences across algorithms are negligible, although SVD tends to outperform others within each framework.

We reported only the steady-state performance in the above discussion; is it correct to do so? We think not. In the next experiment we recorded the throughput of Ext2, Ext3, and XFS every 10 seconds. We used a 410MB file, because it is the largest file that fits in the page cache. Figure 2 depicts the results of this experiment. In the beginning of the experiment no file blocks are cached in memory. As a result all read operations go to the disk, directly limiting the throughput of all the systems to that of the disk. At the end of the experiment, the file is completely in the page cache and all the systems run at memory speed. However, the performance of these file systems differs significantly between 4 and 13 minutes. What should the careful researcher do? It is clear that the interesting region is in the transition from disk-bound to memory-bound. Reporting results at either extreme will lead to the conclusion that the systems behave identi- cally. Depending on where in the transition range a re- searcher records performance, the results can show dif- ferences ranging anywhere from a few percentage points to nearly an order of magnitude! Only the entire graph provides a fair and accurate characterization of the file system performance across this (time) dimension. Such graphs span both memory-bound to I/O bound dimen- sions, as well as a cache warm-up period. Self-scaling benchmarks [3] can collect data for such graphs.

The set of empirical summaries to use is context-specific; for ex- ample, for single-cell RNA-sequencing, dropout profiles and dispersion-mean relationships should be compared [29]; for DNA methylation, correlation patterns among neighboring CpG sites should be investigated [58]; for comparing mapping algorithms, error profiles of the se- quencing platforms should be considered [59]. Simpli- fied simulations can also be useful, to evaluate a new method under a basic scenario, or to systematically test aspects such as scalability and stability. However, overly simplistic simulations should be avoided, since these will not provide useful information on performance. A fur- ther advantage of simulated data is that it is possible to generate as much data as required; for example, to study variability and draw statistically valid conclusions.

3.9. Keep Multilevel Caches into Consideration There are several levels at which caching is used to mitigate performance issues with the underlying storage layers. These include the file system buffer cache, disk array controller caches, and disk drive caches. The file system with its buffer cache is on the top layer of the cache hierarchy. The file system buffer cache is generally some significant amount of physical system memory that is used to hold large chunks of data from files being accessed through a file system manager. For example, when an application or benchmark program issues a read system call most file system managers will read data into the file system buffer cache and then copy the requested data into the user buffer. Similarly, for write operations, the data is copied from the user buffer into the file system buffer cache and later written to the storage media. For normal applications this is acceptable behavior but when running benchmarks it is necessary to understand when the cache is being used and when it is not. Otherwise, the results of the benchmark can be rendered meaningless. The disk array controller and disk drives have separate caches that are not connected or controlled by the file system manager or the device drivers. It is under the control of the disk array or disk drive controller and there are many different control algorithms that determine how it is used and how effective it is. The configuration and usage modes of the cache are purely vendor-dependent and model specific. It is important to understand how the cache, if present, is being used during a benchmark run so that its effects can be taken into account when setting up the benchmark runtime parameters and/or interpreting the results.
