1.1 Curriculum Planning and Implementation

1.1.1 State the vision, mission and objectives of the institution, and describe how these are communicated to the students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders.

Vision:

“Educate to excel in Social Transformation”

To accomplish and maintain international eminence and become a model institution for higher learning through dedicated development of minds, advancement of knowledge and professional application of skills to meet the global demands.

Mission:

• To contribute to the development of human resources in the form of professional engineers and managers of international excellence and competence with high motivation and dynamism, who besides serving as ideal citizen of our country will contribute substantially to the economic development and advancement in their chosen areas of specialization.

• To build the institution with international repute in education in several areas at several levels with specific emphasis to promote higher education and research through strong institute-industry interaction and consultancy.

Objectives of the Institution:

• To provide quality education to the various sectors of society.

• To ensure that all the students admitted in this Institute are qualified in the university examinations.

• To provide placement to all the opted students.

• To improve the leadership ability of the students, thereby grooming them as successful entrepreneur.

Communication to Stakeholders

The college’s mission and vision are displayed at the College Office, Principal, Vice Principal and HODs cabins in all the departments. It is communicated to the students through College academic calendar and during the induction program.

The vision and mission statement of the college is also displayed on the college website.

1.1.2 How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum? Give details of the process and substantiate through specific example(s).

The Principal conducts meetings with all the heads of the departments to develop various strategies for effective implementation of the curriculum designed by the Anna University.

Teachers are encouraged beforehand to impart the curriculum through innovative teaching methods such as multimedia presentations, assignments, workshops, seminars, industrial visits, etc apart from the regular teaching methods.

The heads of the department conduct meetings with the teaching staff members and develop academic plans for the next semester. The syllabus which are to be covered within the given period is decided by the HoDs based on the no. of working days available.

Lesson plans and course files are maintained by each Faculty for their respective subjects allotted, which is reviewed on continuous basis by the HOD and the Principal.

The Academic Committee plans the academic schedule as per the University calendar which includes details like the portions to be taught and no. of working days allocated to the respective units, the quantum of syllabus to be completed in various classes, conducting periodic tests and end semester examinations.

The maximum attendance of the students and good performance are ensured by the class co-ordinators, student counselors and HODs. Students performance, their assessment and attendance details are regularly conveyed to the parents.

Parents of non-performing students are called for a meeting. The students are counseled in the presence of their parents. If any lacuna, is identified the corrective measures are taken with the consent of the respective parents.

1.1.3 What type of support (procedural and practical) do the teachers receive (from the University and/or institution) for effectively translating the curriculum and improving teaching practices?

The curriculum designed by the Anna University, Chennai to which the college is affiliated, is well transacted to the students after serious preparation as well as critical thought by the teachers concerned. Being an affiliated institution we are always in tune with the latest trends in education and guidelines. The Anna University regularly organizes Faculty development programmes, refresher courses, orientation programs and workshops to improve the potentials and the teaching aptitude of the teachers.

Further, the College encourages the teachers to participate in the FDPs/Orientation Courses/ Refresher Courses/ Workshops/ Seminars organized by the affiliating University to update their knowledge and to uplift the teaching practices.

The college provides sample books and other teaching and reference materials like online Journals, Magazines, Teaching Models and Multimedia, hardware and softwares to enable its teachers to ensure effective delivery of curriculum. Most of the departments organize various Faculty development workshops for the benefit of staff members to participate and update the knowledge with the latest emerging trends.

1.1.4 Specify the initiatives taken up or contribution made by the institution for effective curriculum delivery and transaction on the Curriculum provided by the affiliating University or other Statutory agency.

The college relies on the globally trusted and follows the teaching strategy, i.e., the chalk and talk method. However, initiatives have been taken for the effective delivery of the curriculum.

Well planned academic calendar with necessary instructions are given at the beginning of the semester with all norms and assessment schemes.

Providing class notes, Question banks, Lab manuals, Model question papers, transparency in assessment are the key factors. Slow learners are given special attention by conducting extra coaching for each subject.

The College faculties are trained to use the modern teaching aids such as LCD projectors, OHP’s and online library, internet, etc. to supplement their class room lectures. All the staff members are well habituated to teach using modern teaching resources like NPTEL, digital library, etc.

In addition to the regular subject classes, the college also organizes special lectures by inviting experts from various fields to share their knowledge and experiences with the students. The college also organizes special Personality Development Programs for its students.

The placement department conducts campus recruitment training programs for all students and intensive training to pre-final and final year students.

The students are also taken out for educational tours such as industries/trade fairs, exhibitions and places of technical importance to provide them a firsthand knowledge of various engineering aspects.

1.1.5 How does the institution network and interact with beneficiaries such as

industry, research bodies and the university in effective operationalisation of the curriculum?

Industry

The college has set up a Training & Placement department which bridges the professional relations with the representatives of industries. The HR managers of various companies are invited to the college campus to interact with the students on various occasions. The students of various departments of the college are taken for industrial visits from time to time to keep them abreast of the latest developments in the market. Industry sponsored projects are encouraged.

Research Bodies

To trigger research activities in the campus, research Scholars from various fields are invited to the college to motivate the students to take up research projects in their studies. The Faculty members of the college are also motivated to take up research projects initiated by the affiliating university or the UGC. Faculty members also keep on interacting with various research bodies and participate in various research projects. Some of the Faculty members are members of professional bodies like ISTE, Computer Society of India (CSI), IEEE, and IEI.

University

The Faculty members of the college regularly keep in touch with the Anna University to whicj the college is affiliated and also with the Centre for Faculty Development and get the latest information through their website.

1.1.8 How does institution anlayse/ensure that the stated objectives of curriculum are achieved in the course of implementation?

Once the academic session is in full swing and all the laid action plans are being followed, the college at various points takes stock of the effectiveness of these action plans.

Also, the college ensures that during the course of implementation, the stated objectives of the curriculum are achieved.

Various class tests, periodic exams are conducted to monitor the outcomes of the syllabus. Systematic documentation is maintained to review the outcomes of the curriculum.

College also allocates student counseling method where 20 students of each class are monitored by one Faculty member who will be responsible to give information about their attendance, marks to their parents on a periodical basis and also counseling is done for them, on various occasions.

Periodic ISO audits also help in analyzing the status quo of the achievements pertaining to the objectives of curriculum. NBA accreditation of the programs ensures the achievement of the curriculum objectives.
