Stage Technology 1

Stage Technology introduces students to the equipment and princi- ples used in creating performances. Students will learn both the theory and practical application of theater technology, including the basics of sound and lighting equipment and scenic design using the state of the art Wando High School Performing Arts Center. Quali- fied students will provide technical support for Wando events.

Media Arts 1 - Introduction 351500CW Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

This course will acquaint students with the aesthetic and technical concepts involved in the creation of video and audio media. Stu- dents will analyze, interpret, and create media products containing images, sound, music, and language in a variety of formats including print, web sites, and moving-image. This course is the foundation for students wishing to pursue a career path in film, web or graphic design.

Photography 1 456600CW Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Visual Design or teacher recom- mendation

Requirements: A 35 mm traditional film SLR camera which has manually operated focus and exposure, a SLR Digi- tal Camera and $75 fee for all materials (film, photographic paper, developing chemicals, etc.) Financial assistance may be available to students who can demonstrate need.

Photography I is a course designed for the highly motivated student who is interested in the study of photography as an art form. The proper use of manual 35mm cameras as well as digital SLR cameras is addressed. Topics include a survey of photographic history, com- position and technical skills, traditional darkroom and computer lab

Prerequisite: Photography 1

Requirements: A 35 mm traditional film SLR camera which has manually operated focus and exposure, a SLR Digi- tal Camera and $75 fee for all materials (film, photographic paper, developing chemicals, etc.) Financial assistance may be available to students who can demonstrate need.

The Photography 2 course is a continuation of Photography 1 and is designed for advanced students who may be planning to submit an AP 2-D Design Portfolio or a career in photography. This course builds on prior black and white photographic skills as well as con- tinuing to work with digital images. The focus is on development of a photographic portfolio. Students may use their own cameras or may be issued school cameras and will be responsible for their re- placement if lost or damaged.

Media Arts 2 - Video and Audio 351600CW Production

Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Any one of the following: Drama1 or 2 , Photogra- phy 1 or 2, Media Arts 1, Stage Technology 1 or 2, Creative Writing 1 or 2, Broadcast Journalism 1 - 4, Digital Multimedia, Image Editing 1 or 2, or Founda- tions of Animation.

This course is designed to introduce students to the history and techniques of filmmaking. Students will study and gain hands-on experience with a variety of film/video media and techniques includ- ing writing, producing, directing, lighting, shooting, sound recording, and editing. Students will create storyboards, charts and narrative diagrams as well as critique the work of other filmmakers including fellow classmates.

Media Arts 3 - Advanced Production 351700CW Grades 11 and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Media Arts 2 or instructor approval

Students will use techniques learned in Media Arts 2 to create short films in a variety of formats and styles. Students will develop their skills in editing and producing along with creating lighting and sound environments that enhance meaning through image.

Stage Technology 2 TBD Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Stage Technology 1 or Media Arts 2 and instructor approval

Students with advanced skills in stage or media production will apply their skills to events and activities in the Wando Performing Arts Center and Center for Advanced Studies. Students will design and build sets, set up and run lighting and sound equipment, and work as production and technical directors for events.

Requirements: All students are required to perform in all concerts and public performances.

All students must enroll in Concert Orchestra Re- hearsal

Ninth grade students must also enroll in Health/ Arts for ½ unit credit.

This course is designed for students who have participated in or- chestra in middle school or the previous year in high school. Stu- dents continue a sequential development of skills necessary to be come proficient on a musical instrument. Students will perform music commensurate with grade level (grades IV - V). Students will learn orchestral repertoire and will develop an understanding of the concepts of music and the cultural heritage of the music studied. Emphasis is will be placed on the development of good tone, accu- rate pitch, growth in music reading and understanding of a wide variety of music. Health/Arts meets the requirements of the Com- prehensive Health Education Act.

Chamber Orchestra 355110HW Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Audition only

Requirement: All students are required to perform in all concerts and public performances and are expected to at- tend mandatory weekly rehearsals outside of school hours.

This course is designed for advanced students who have passed an audition and have demonstrated advanced technical skills. The course is organized so that students will learn music at the advanced high school level (IV - VI). Students will develop an understanding of the concepts of music and the cultural heritage of the music studied as well as music theory skills.

THEATRE

Theatre 1 452100CW (Drama 1 - Introduction to Theater) Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

This introductory course is designed to expose students to the process of creating theatre. Students explore acting techniques such as voice projection and movement, dramatic literature, mar- keting, set design and costumes. The course concludes with a showcase production that allows students to apply the skills and knowledge obtained throughout the course.

Theatre 2 452200CW (Drama 2)

Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Drama 1 or audition

This course is for students who are interested in developing their acting or production skills. Students who have experience in com- munity, school, or church theatre, have completed Drama 1 or are interested in being an active part of the Wando Theatre Depart- ment should audition for placement into Drama 2. The course will review basic acting skills and explore scene writing, advanced acting, and production jobs.

Theatre 3 452300CW (Drama 3 - Acting)

Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Drama 2 or audition

Requirement: Participation in the Wando Touring Children’s Theatre Troupe

This course is for intermediate students who have demonstrated mastery of basic acting and technical skills. Advanced acting, theatre history, and production will be emphasized. Students in this class will participate in the Wando Touring Children’s Theatre Troupe as part of the class requirement.

Theatre 3 452300CW (Drama 3 - Musical Theatre) Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit (yearlong skinny)

Prerequisite: Drama 1 or Drama 2, Chorus 1, or audition

This intermediate acting course is for students who have demon- strated mastery of basic acting and singing skills. Topics will include history of musical theatre, acting the song, movement for the stage, and production.

THEATRE

Theatre 3 Honors 452300HW (Drama 3 Honors - Honors Theatre Ensemble) Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit (yearlong skinny)

Prerequisite: Drama 1 or Drama 2 and audition

This honors level course is for advanced students who have passed a rigorous audition and plan to take Drama 4. Advanced acting, theatre history, and production will be emphasized. Students will be expected to participate as performers and crew members in co- curricular theatre activities such as plays, competitions, and attend a mandatory weekly rehearsal outside of school hours. Costs associ- ated with trips and competitions will be the responsibility of the student but fundraising opportunities will be provided.

Theatre 4 Honors 452400HW (Drama 4 Honors - Honors Theatre Ensemble) Grades 11 and 12 1 unit (yearlong skinny)

Prerequisite: Drama 3 and audition

This honors level course is for advanced students who have passed a rigorous audition and demonstrated advanced acting and technical skills. Advanced acting, theatre history, and production will be em- phasized. Drama 4 students will complete a thesis project in a thea- tre discipline of their choosing, such as directing, designing, or play- writing. Students will be expected to take leadership roles in co- curricular theatre activities such as plays, competitions, and attend a mandatory weekly rehearsal out side of school hours. Costs associ- ated with trips and competitions will be the responsibility of the student but fundraising opportunities will be provided.
