MODERN AND CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

French 3 Honors 361300HW Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Recommended: Minimum of 85 in French 2

French 3 is designed for honors level language students who wish to continue their foreign language study beyond three levels in high school. The class moves at a faster pace than French 3, requiring more in-depth analysis of authentic texts and more advanced inter- personal communication skills. This first part of the Developing/ Intermediate Level of French involves practice and expansion of established speaking and listening skills, and emergent reading and writing ability. Major elements of grammar are covered and re- viewed, and the mechanics of the language are organized. Students are given the opportunity to read and discuss simple literary texts. Students also continue basic writing activities and explore contem- porary cultural topics of French-speaking countries. Much of the course is taught in French.

German 4 Honors 362400HW Grades 11 and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: German 3 Honors and teacher recommendation Recommended: Minimum of 85 in German 3 Honors

This course is the second part of the Developing/Intermediate Level of honors language study, and is conducted predominantly in Ger- man. Students apply major grammatical structures in an increasing variety of oral and written contexts; vocabulary and complexity of conversation acquires breadth and depth. Students develop critical thinking skills as they interpret more difficult authentic reading and audio/video selections. Students are exposed to more complex aspects of German cultural history and contemporary life.

This first part of the Developing/Intermediate Level of German fo- cuses on grammar review, practice and expansion of established speaking and listening skills, and emergent reading and writing ability. The pace is faster than in German 2. Grammar topics are reviewed and expanded; longer creative writing assignments provide opportu- nity to apply language mechanics and vocabulary in meaningful con- test. Reading strategies for longer authentic selections are prac- ticed. Students expand the range of contexts in which they can function orally and the complexity of their responses. Cultural in- vestigation focuses on contemporary and historical German- speaking Europe.

This course is the first part of the Beginning/Novice Level of Ger- man studies. It is designed to develop basic German language skills through activities focusing on personal communication. Beginning level students work to understand German in selected contexts, express themselves orally and in writing, and negotiate meaning from reading authentic texts. Students study and compare the cul- tures and customs of German-speaking Europe.

This course is the second part of the Developing/Intermediate Level of honors language study and focuses on the development of more advanced skills of conversation, reading, and writing. Students apply major grammatical structures in a variety of oral and written con- texts. Lessons develop students’ critical thinking skills as they inter- pret more difficult reading selections. Students discuss more ad- vanced aspects of French culture, contemporary life, and history using authentic video, audio, and Internet sites. Except for certain grammatical explanations, this course is taught in French.

French 5 Honors 361500HW Grades 11 and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: French 4 Honors and teacher recommendation Recommended: Minimum of an 85 or higher in French 4 Honors

This course enables students to expand language capacity through a broad range of interdisciplinary contexts with emphasis on refining language use appropriate to various socio-cultural contexts. Stu- dents’ proficiency is refined in the culmination of the study of a lan- guage system that involves spoken and written language, nonverbal communication, knowledge of discourse style, as well as the integra- tion of cultural understanding through its products, practices and perspectives. Students will read and discuss in greater depth au- thentic materials including poetry, stories, news reports, film, maga- zine articles and literature.

Latin 3 Honors 363300HW Grades 10, 11, and 12 1 unit

Prerequisite: Latin 2

Recommended: Minimum of an 85 in Latin 2

This course completes the introduction to basic Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary followed by an introduction to the reading of Latin literature. Students will study the classical authors Julius Cae- sar and Ovid.

Prerequisite: Latin 3 Honors and teacher recommendation Recommended: Minimum of an 85 or higher in Latin 3 Honors

Students will further their studies by reading Latin literature from a variety of classical authors. Students will examine the writings of Medieval and Neo-Latin authors. Latin 4 is designed to provide advanced high school students with a rich and rigorous Latin course, approximately equivalent to an upper-intermediate (typically fourth or fifth semester) college or university Latin course. Students who successfully complete the course are able to read, understand, translate, and analyze Latin poetry and prose.

This course is the second part of the Beginning/Novice Level of Spanish studies. Students continue to develop basic language skills through performance-based activities focusing on personal commu- nication. Major topics from Spanish 1 are reviewed and expanded, increasing the number of contexts in which students can function orally and in writing. Through listening and reading, students learn more about the daily life and culture in Spanish-speaking countries today.

This Physical Education course is a performance-based class that is mandatory for graduation in the State of South Carolina. This co- educational course is designed with a variety of activities to provide students with choice curriculum along with the skills to live a healthy lifestyle. This course is designed to focus on and help the student achieve and maintain a health enhancing lifestyle. Students will participate in three basic fitness categories: cardio respiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility on a daily basis.

This course requires students to be proficient (mastery) in two movement forms of their choice. Students will be evaluated daily on dress and participation for this performance-based class.
