Synopsis

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colours comes to vibrant life in this delightful parable. Joseph, his father's favourite son, is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock 'n' roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

MALE ROLES:

Joseph: Tenor (Low A to High G). Stage age – 18+

Joseph is the male lead. He needs to be able to mature from 18 to 40ish over the course of the show. Joseph begins as a cocky teenager who, through dealing with life’s adversities, becomes a humble man and a true leader. He needs to be a strong singer and actor. Joseph will be shirtless for much of the production. Likeable, enigmatic, sincere performer. Obviously his father’s favourite, Joseph early on shows a talent for interpreting dreams and telling the future. This gets him into trouble with his brothers when he predicts his future will include ruling over the other eleven. However, it saves his life when in Egypt he correctly interprets Pharaoh’s dreams. In the end he has risen to a great position of power, but he still forgives his brothers and brings his family to Egypt to partake of the bounty he has accumulated there.

Jacob: Baritone (Low A to High C). Stage age – 50+

Jacob is the father of Joseph and his 11 brothers. He clearly favours Joseph as the first son of his favourite wife, unwittingly causing the friction that exists between Joseph and his brothers. Jacob needs to be a good actor, who can sing and move reasonably well.

Potiphar: Baritone (Low D to B). Stage age 40+

Potiphar is a wealthy, self-indulgent man. He needs to be a strong actor as well as a good singer. He may double as a brother. A powerful and rich Egyptian, Potiphar purchases Joseph and puts him to work in his household, where he soon realises that Joseph is honest, hard-working, and a great addition to his pool of help. When he grows suspicious of his wife and Joseph, however, he grows angry and has Joseph thrown into prison.

Brothers: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Napthali, Issachar, Asher, Dan, Zebulon, Gad, Benjamin & Judah: Stage ages 16 – 30s.

High energy & very active. Singers/dancers/actors. Joseph’s 11 brothers, who were born of 4 different mothers (two wives and two handmaidens), are jealous of Joseph and the fact that he is clearly their father’s favourite son. Need to be able to develop strong unique characters and sing harmony. Able to portray wide range of performance styles. Although acting usually as a group, they each have their own different personalities, talents, and flaws. They sing and dance their way through many situations and places. Conniving, self-centred, and jealous of Joseph's high aspirations and their father's favouritism toward Joseph, they change their ways in the end.

Reuben: sings “One More Angel in Heaven” (Low B to High F) Simeon: sings “Those Canaan Days” (C to High Eb)

Judah: sings “Benjamin Calypso” (F to High F) Pharaoh: Tenor/Baritone (Low B to High G#) Stage age 30s/40s.

Pharaoh is the leader of Egypt and a very self-important man. He sings an Elvis-style song, “Song of the King” and is very comfortable having adoring fans. He needs to be a strong singer and actor and a good dancer/mover with good comic timing. Should be an outgoing, engaging entertainer, able to take the stage and connect with an audience. The most powerful man in Egypt, Pharaoh is considered a god on earth. When Joseph interprets his dreams, he promotes him to one of the highest positions in his government.

(3)

Baker: Tenor (Low D to High G). Stage Age 25+

Needs be a good singer and may also be one of the brothers. One of Pharaoh’s servants, the Baker is in prison with Joseph who correctly interprets his dreams and predicts that he will be put to death.

Butler: Tenor (Low C to High G). Stage Age 25+

Another of Pharaoh’s servants, the Butler is also in prison with Joseph who also correctly interprets his dreams, this time that he will be released and taken back into Pharaoh’s household. It is the Butler who tells Pharaoh about Joseph and his uncanny ability with dreams. May also be one of the brothers.

Swings: Ishmaelite’s, Potiphar’s henchmen, Prisoners, Egyptian guards. FEMALE ROLES:

Narrator: Soprano with extended mix/belt range. (Low A to High A). Stage age 18+

A woman, not of the time or place of the action, The Narrator is a storyteller who is sharing a wonderful tale with the children, their families and the wider audience. She needs to be a strong singer who can draw the audience into the saga of Joseph and his brothers, showing what shapes them into the men they were destined to become. Vibrant, energetic, charming performer, animated storyteller. Movement/dance experience needed. The narrator must be adept at both being the focal point and then “blending” into the scene. Mrs Potiphar: Alto/Mezzo (Low D to A). Stage age 30+

Mrs. Potiphar is an indulgent woman who likes to get her own way, and thinks first and foremost about her own personal gratification. She needs to be a confident mover/dancer, who is comfortable moving in a seductive manner. She will also be a part of the women’s chorus.

Women (10): Varying age, size, and ethnicity for the roles of wives, mothers, handmaidens, featured dancers, and chorus. Backup singers/dancers for the Pharaoh Strong singers, need to be able to learn and hold harmonies. Singers/dancers for “One More Angel in Heaven”. Go-go dancers/singers for “Go, Go-go, Go-go Joseph”

Soprano: Soloist for “One More Angel in Heaven” CHILDREN ENSEMBLE:

Children: Stage ages 8-15 (Double cast)

40 - 60 Chorus roles for boys and girls. Children must be age 8 or older by April 1st, 2016, in order to audition for the children’s chorus. The children’s chorus will be on stage for the majority of the show.

Stage ages: Your stage age is NOT your chronological age, but the age you appear on the stage, e.g. you may be 20 years old, but appear to be 14 years old on stage.
