Today’s Game: The Baysox needed to sweep Akron in Sunday’s doubleheader to secure a split in the four-game, three day series and that’s exactly what they did. In Game 1 the Baysox faced the Eastern League wins and ERA leader Shawn Morimando, who was previously undefeated. Multi-hit games courtesy of Julio Borbon, Henry Urruita and Quincy Latimore provided the offense that chased Morimando out the game after 4.2 innings pitched and five runs on 10 hits, both season-highs...Jayson Aquino was the star of the game as he threw a masterful complete game (7-innings) shutout and allowed just three hits while striking out eight RubberDucks batters in the 6-0 win... Game 2 was a much different game. The RubberDucks began the game with back-to-back home runs off of Bowie starter David Richardson, who was making his Double-A debut. Akron seemed to be in control of the game when they saw their lead evaporate due to an improbable nine-run two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning that propelled the Baysox to come back from five runs down to take the lead and eventually the victory, 12-7... The nine run sixth inning was the most runs Bowie scored in a single inning all season and it featured five hits (three extra-base), four walks and was capped off by a Glynn Davis grand slam....Throughout the day, the Baysox bats were alive and well knocking 24 hits in total, 12 each game. Bowie batted .500 (13-26) with runners in scoring position while the Baysox pitching staff held the RubberDucks to a .142 clip (1-7) when they threatened with runners in scoring position...After their day off on Monday, tonight Bowie will attempt to build on the momentum garnered from Sunday’s sweep against the Portland Sea Dogs. This will be the Baysox third encounter with an Eastern division foe and the first encounter between the two teams on the season..Last season, through six games, the Baysox won the season-series 5-1...
Starting Pitchers: RHP David Hess makes his 11th start of the season for the Baysox...In his last start he threw five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out four Flying Squirrel batters in the 2-4 loss to Richmond. Hess has hit a rough patch in the season and has lost each of his last three outings and has allowed 21 hits over his last three starts (15 innings pitched)...The strong right-hander entered the 2016 season as the No. 18 rated prospect in the Orioles organization according to Baseball America...After a slow start in 2015 Hess was dynamic down the stretch and pitched two huge playoff games for the eventual Eastern League Champions, Bowie Baysox. During his final 15 starts, plus two playoff wins, he posted a 1.61 ERA...A big second half of 2015 looks to have Hess poised to have a breakout 2016 season...He features a good fastball, a slider and a curveball as his secondary pitches...Hess, originally a 2014 draft pick was the first player of his draft class to make their Double-A debut in Bowie...
RHP Mitch Atkins is making his fourth start of the season (13th appearance) for the Portland Sea Dogs this evening. Atkins is a seasoned veteran and has pitched at all levels throughout the minors and the Major Leagues prior to this season. The North Carolina native was originally selected in the seventh round of he 2004 First_Year Player Draft by the Chicago Cubs out of Northeast Guilford (McLeansville, N.C.) High School...He made his Major League debut vs. the Houston Astros on July 29, 2009 and tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out a 12-0 Cubs victory. Next season, in 2010, Atkins was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a Minor League free agent on Nov. 15, 2010. In three games with the Orioles during the 2011 season Atkins went a combined 0-0 with a 8.44 ERA over 10.2 innings pitched. Atkins is also quite familiar with the Eastern League...During that same 2011 season Atkins played in Bowie. For the Baysox, Atkins pitched in four games and was 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA and threw 26.2 innings. In his 13-year career Atkins has jumped around to six different organizations...
Pitcher Of the Week: Award for the period of May 30th through June 5th Jayson Aquino started a pair of games and went a combined 2-0 with 15 strikeouts and an outstanding 0.00 ERA. Aquino, who is a native of the Dominican Republic, made his first start at Richmond 5/31 and threw eight shut out innings in a 10-0 win. He struck out seven batters and walked one while allowing just four hits. Aquino’s second appearance of the week came Game 1 in Sunday’s doubleheader 6/5 versus Akron and pitched a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and two walks in a 6-0 win. With the shutout the 23-year-old Aquino led all Eastern League pitchers in shutouts (1) and innings pitched (15.0) last week and tied for the lead in wins (2), ERA (0.00) and complete games (1)...Aquino was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals just before the 2016 season for cash...He is currently a member of the Orioles 40-man roster...Aquino has jumped around between a number of organizations since being designated for assignment by Colorado (the team that signed him in 2010) in January 2015...In 2015 he pitched with Dunedin, Bradenton and Lynchburg (All High-A teams)He went a combined 5-11 with a 3.80 ERA with 86 strikeouts, 30 walks over 24 starts and 137.1 innings pitched...Entering the 2016 season he made just two starts at the AA level with Tulsa in 2014 (0-0, 3.00 ERA)...
Well Deserved Rest: The day off yesterday could not have come at a more dire time for Bowie. On Sunday, the Baysox played their fifth doubleheader of the season which concluded a five day, seven game stretch for the Baysox...With the doubleheader sweep against the Eastern League leading first place Akron, the Baysox are now 7-3 in doubleheaders on the season...On the season, through seven games, the Baysox are now 3-4 in games after a day off...
