Overview

The Performance Measures Package displays counts and rates (exposure) for crashes and their severity (number of people injured or killed). These values are displayed annually for all public roadways in the State of Michigan. Some of the performance measures can be viewed at a statewide, district, or legal system grouping by selection in an option group.

Similar performance measures are grouped together in SMS. These groups or "categories" of measures are Severity, Circumstance, Crash Type, Driver/Vehicle, Location, and Miscellaneous. Not all measures include a rate calculation. If AADT data is not available for that particular measure then no rate is given.

The following formula is used to calculate a rate which is a count per 100 Million Vehicles Miles of Travel:

Rate = (Count * 10 exp 8)/(365 *(Sum of ) Length * Weighted AADT), for a given year, where,

Count = Crash count of number of people

Weighted AADT = (Sum of ) (Length * AADT) / (Sum of ) Length, for a given year. At the statewide and district level AADT information in the form of Vehicle Miles of Travel (VMT) is used to calculate rate. VMT, which is provided by the Bureau of Planning , is equal to Length * AADT.
