- Mae Suai Distr. 6 villages - Wiang Pa Pao Distr. 3 villages

The “Adopt a Village” program launched with the Chiang Rai Area Development Project in 2006 in partnership with 9 hill- tribe communities in Chiang Rai province.

THE GOAL:

Tackling the root causes of human

trafficking by strengthening the capacity of communities to be empowered, self

sufficient and debt free through integrated rural community development.

Adopt a Village

Adopt a Village -Phase I

Three Year Budget - 22,289,722 THB

(16)

Rationale

“Thai and hill tribe women and girls are trafficked to Japan, Malaysia, South Africa, Bahrain, Australia, Singapore, Europe, Canada and the United States for sexual and labor exploitation.

Many women and girls are trafficked by international criminal syndicates. Many Thai are lured to Taiwan, Malaysia, the

United States, and the Middle East by labor recruiting agencies and are forced into involuntary servitude because of the high debt owed to the agencies.”

(2006 US Dept. of State Human Rights Report, 2007 US Dept. of State Trafficking in Persons Report – from www.humantafficking.org)

“..As a source country, the main cause is undoubtedly poverty, which makes people in certain parts of the country an easy

target for human traffickers.”

(Bangkok Post Sunday Oct 12. 2008)

Adopt a Village

(17)

Rationale

“The internal traffic of Thai females consists mostly of 12-16 year olds from hill tribes of the North/ NorthEast. Most of the internally trafficked girls are sent to closed brothels, which operate

under prison-like conditions.”

(Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) - Asia Pacific, Trafficking in Women and Prostitution in the Asia Pacific -from www.uri.edu/artsci/wms/hughes/thailand.htm)

Adopt a Village

(18)

Rationale

ADRA Thailand is working in both the prevention and

treatment of this de-humanising and community destroying problem.

The Keep Girls Safe project provides a shelter for girls that have been abused / are at high risk of abuse and trafficking, as well as community awareness raising of the issue.

Adopt a Village aims to change attitudes and reduce cycles of debt and poverty that result in children being sold as

human traffic in the first place.

New Project 2009-2012

Adopt a Village - Phase II

Building on the success of “Adopt a Village” - Phase I, an additional selection of 15 villages were surveyed for Phase II (Mae Suai Area Development Project 2009- 2012)

These villages are in 2 sub-catchment clusters in Mae Suai district

ADRA plans to work at the catchment level as well as

village level, to build local capacity to be self-sustaining

(24)

MAP!!!

Integrated Catchments

Approach

(25)

Identified Key Needs / Issues

Adopt a Village - Phase II

Lack of citizenship

Insecure water supply and lack of sanitation

Lack of knowledge of disease prevention and hygiene

Unsustainable farming practices

Long term debt cycles due to low crop productivity

Lack of product value-adding and group marketing

Poor village infrastructure

Illiteracy among adults and difficulties for children to

access education

(26)

Partnership Opportunities

ADRA Thailand is looking for committed donors to enter into a three- way partnership of empowerment with these villages and ADRA Thailand.

For as little as between AUD$140,000 and AUD$175,000 (depending on the village / needs identified), a village can be supported for a full 3 year project cycle.

All contributions welcome regardless of the size! By

combining your modest donation with those from others, more components and villages can be funded.

Other Ways to Support

-Tell your friends and pass it on..!

Are you a corporate donor?

Other ways of supporting these hill tribe communities include:

Making this your corporate community initiative for the next financial year;

Promoting “Adopt a Village” as your workplace giving project; or even

Challenging your staff to step-up WITH you in being socially

conscious, by offering a new workplace matching donation initiative.
