Open Educational Resources (OER)
Pilot Program, Fall 2015 Final Report
Assessments Conducted by Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)
Catherine Overson, Associate Director, CETL
Daniel Pyburn, Project, Director, CETL
Assessments Targeted Four Central Areas:
1. Textbook Cost Savings
2. Student Perceptions of the OER Materials
3. Student Learning Outcomes
4. Faculty Perceptions of the OER Pilot Program
Report Prepared by:
Catherine Overson, Associate Director, CETL
February 9, 2016
Six faculty members participated in the Fall 2016 OER pilot program. We asked faculty: “If you
were to use a textbook in your course, which one would you use?”
We used faculty’s recommended text and associated cost (current as of the February 9, 2016 date
of this report) to compile the total potential cost savings for their student enrollment. The cost
savings presented below reflect the assumption that all enrolled students would have purchased a
hardcopy (hardcover, when available) of the required textbook. Given that we have no way of
tracking
1) whether students would have purchased a text at all
2) whether they would have borrowed a text
3) if purchased, the format of the text (hardcover, paperback, or online)
4) where they might have made a purchase
5) whether a selling agent negotiated a special price for a text
our cost savings is documented in terms of an estimation of the maximum amount of savings.

CETL staff met with individual faculty to tailor the student perception survey to their course, and
the OER materials they used during their course leading to the first exam. Perception surveys
were updated as needed for each subsequent exam. Some questions were constant to all, such as
accessibility and ease of navigation of materials, and other questions unique to the course were
based on particular OER materials, for example, videos, TED Talks, websites, and online book
chapters.
In order to reduce bias, students responded to the surveys prior to receiving feedback on their
exam scores either immediately after exams (paper and pencil or online surveys) or within 48
hours after taking the exam (online surveys).
Overall student response to the materials was positive: In addition to the many positive
comments about the cost savings, they generally reported that the accessibility and navigation

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Faculty ambassadors had each taught the same course as their Fall 2015 OER course using
traditional textbooks within the prior two semesters. Faculty reported that although some exam
questions necessarily differed this semester corresponding to OER content, the exam format
(with one course exception: Contemporary Conservation Issues) and rigor remained constant.
We computed descriptive statistics for student exam performance for both sections (prior section
with traditional texts and the Fall 2015 section with OER materials) for each of the courses in the
OER pilot program. Mean exam scores indicate student learning for course material leading to
each of the exams. Exam scores were generally comparable (means plus or minus 5 points) for
each of the two sections, with the exception of three courses where mean exam scores for one

Faculty Perceptions of Their OER
Experience
Faculty ambassadors used a variety of OER resources, with the majority reporting having used
videos and websites. Overwhelmingly, the faculty reported that the various support staff were
helpful in locating the many resources for their courses. In addition, faculty reported that
although the amount of associated work to develop and adapt their courses for the OER pilot
program was appreciable, the time spent was not unanticipated, was manageable, and was
viewed as an investment with generally positive returns regarding pedagogy and student
feedback. Overall, the faculty ambassadors reported that they would continue to use OER
