Before youbegininstallingoptions inyourserver,readthefollowinginformation: v Readthesafetyinformationbeginningonpagev andtheguidelines in“Handling

v Makesure thatyou haveanadequatenumberofproperlygrounded electrical outletsforyourserver,monitor, andotherdevicesthatyouwillconnect tothe server.

Tohelpensurepropercooling andsystemreliability,makesurethat: v Eachofthedrive bayshasa driveora fillerpanelandelectromagnetic
compatibility(EMC)shieldinstalledinit.
v Iftheserverhasredundantpower,each ofthepower-supplybayshasa power supplyinstalledinit.
v Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoallow theservercoolingsystem to workproperly. Leaveapproximately50mm(2in.)of openspacearoundthefront andrearof theserver.Donotplaceobjects infrontof thefans. Forproper coolingandairflow,replacetheservercoverbeforeturningontheserver. Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsoftime (over30minutes) withthe servercoverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
Wheninstallingtheserverinarack, makesure thatspaceisavailablearound theserverto enabletheservercoolingsystem toworkproperly.Seethe documentationthatcomeswiththerack foradditionalinformation.

v Donotallowyournecktieor scarfto hanginsidetheserver.
v Removejewelry,suchasbracelets,necklaces,rings,andloose-fittingwrist watches.
v Removeitemsfromyourshirt pocket,suchaspens andpencils,thatcouldfall intotheserverasyoulean overit.

Handling
static-sensitive
devices
Attention: Staticelectricity candamageelectronicdevices,includingyourserver. Toavoiddamage,keep static-sensitivedevicesintheirstatic-protectivepackages until youarereadyto installthem.
Toreducethepossibilityofelectrostaticdischarge,observethefollowing precautions:
v Limityour movement.Movementcan causestaticelectricity tobuilduparound you.
v Handlethedevicecarefully,holdingit byitsedgesor itsframe. v Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposedcircuitry.
v Donotleavethedevice whereotherscanhandleanddamageit.
v Whilethedeviceisstillinitsstatic-protectivepackage,touchit toanunpainted metalpartof theserverfor atleast2seconds.Thisdrainsstaticelectricity from thepackageandfromyourbody.
v Removethedevice fromitspackageandinstallit directlyintotheserverwithout settingdownthedevice.Ifit isnecessary tosetdownthedevice,putitbackinto itsstatic-protectivepackage.Donotplacethedeviceonyourservercoveroron ametalsurface.
v Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcold weather.Heatingreduces indoorhumidityandincreasesstaticelectricity.
Removing
the
side
cover
Completethefollowingstepsto removetheside coverof theserver: 1. Reviewthe“Installationguidelines”onpage9.
2. Turn offtheserverandallattached devices(see“Turning ontheserver”on page 38);then, disconnectallpowercordsandexternal cables.
3. Laytheserveronitsside.
4. Unlockthesidecover;then,pull thecover-releaselatchawayfromtheserver, andpush thecovertowardtherearof theserver.Lifttheside coveroff the serverandsetitaside.

Removing
the
bezel
When workingwithsomedevices,suchasadditionalopticaldrives,youmustfirst removethebezeltoaccessthedevice.

1. Removethesidecover(see“Removingtheside cover”onpage11). 2. For hot-swapharddiskdrive models:
a. Opentheserverdoor.
b. Rotatethehot-swaplockbarforwardandremoveitfromthebezel(seethe illustration onpage 26).If thehot-swaplockbarwillnotrotate,pressthetop of thehot-swaplockbartoreleasethelockmechanism.
3. Locatethebezel-releaselever;then,pressthebezel-releaselevertowardthe frontof theserver.
4. Pullthetopofthebezelawayfromthechassis;then,pushthebezeldownto disengagethebottomtabs.
5. Removethebezelfromtheserverandstorethebezelina safeplace.
Removing
and
installing
the
support
bracket
When workingwithsomedevices,suchasharddiskdrives,adapters,andmemory modules,youmust firstremovethesupportbracketto accessthedevice.
Completethefollowingstepsto removethesupportbracket:
1. Reviewthesafetyinformationbeginningonpagevand“Installationguidelines” onpage9.
2. Removethesidecover(“Removingthesidecover”onpage11).
3. If yourservercomeswithastandard supportbracketsimiliartothesupport bracketinthefollowingillustration,completethefollowingsteps:

Your servercomeswithadapterconnectorsorslots.Thestandardvideoadapteris installedinmini-PCIslot 6(PCI6).Youcaninstall upto fiveadditionaloptional adapters inPCIslot 1(PCI1)andPCI-Xslots2through5(PCI2throughPCI5). instructions.Itmightbeeasiertoroutecables beforeyouinstalltheadapter. 4. Rotatetherearadapter-retentionbracketto theopen (unlocked)positionand
removeitfromtheserver.Rotatethefrontadapter-retentionbracketto the openposition.Ifyouareinstallingasmalleradapter, removeonly therear adapter-retentionbracket.
5. Removetheexpansion-slot cover.Fromtherearoftheserver,pressonthe slotcover.Graspitandpullit outoftheexpansionslot.Storeit ina safeplace forfutureuse.
Note: Expansion-slotcoversmust beinstalledonallvacantslots.This maintainstheelectronicemissionsstandardsof theserverandensures proper ventilationofservercomponents.
6. Setanyjumpers orswitchesontheadapteror systemboardaccordingto the documentationthatcomeswiththeadapter.
Attention: Avoidtouchingthecomponentsandgold-edgeconnectorsonthe adapter.
7. Ifyouareinstallingafull-lengthadapter,removetheblueadapterguide(ifany) fromtheendof theadapter.
Adapter guide
Attention: Becertainthattheadapteriscorrectlyseatedintheexpansion slotbeforeyou turnontheserver.Incompleteinstallationofanadaptermight damagethesystemboardor theadapter.
8. Carefullygrasptheadapterbythetopedgeor uppercorners,andalignit with theexpansionslotguides;then, presstheadapterfirmlyintotheexpansion slot.Movetheadapterdirectly fromthestatic-protectivepackagetothe adapterslot.

You caninstallanoptionalSCSIadapterinyourservertocontroltheinternalhard diskdrives.WithaSCSIadapterinstalled,youcanconfiguretheinternalharddisk drivesintodiskarrays.YoucanalsocableaSCSIadaptertoexternal harddisk drives. v Thedrivesthatarepreinstalledinyourservercomewithpowerandsignalcables attached.If youreplaceanydrives,rememberwhichcableisattachedto which drive.
v Whenyouinstalla drive,ensurethatoneofthedriveconnectors ofthesignal cableisconnectedto thedriveandthattheconnectorattheotherendofthe signalcableisconnected tothesystemboard.
v Theserverhastwo IDEbuses,primaryandsecondary. Eachofthesebuses supportsuptotwo IDEdevices.TheprimaryIDEbususesconnectorIDE1on thesystemboardandthesecondaryIDEbususesconnectorIDE2.
v Ifyouhave onlyoneIDEdeviceonacable,it mustbesetasa masterdevice. v IftwoIDEdevicesareusedonasinglecable,onemustbedesignatedasthe
masterdeviceandtheotherasthesubordinatedevice; otherwise,theserver mightnotrecognizesomeoftheIDEdevices.Themasterandsubordinate designationisdeterminedbyswitchor jumpersettingsoneachIDEdevice. Thefollowingcables areprovided:
v Powercables:Four-wire powercablesconnect thedrivestothepowersupply. Attheendofthesecablesareplasticconnectorsthatcanbeattachedto differentdrives;theseconnectors varyinsize.
v Signalcables:Signalcablesaretypicallyflatcables,also calledribboncables, thatconnectIDE,SCSI,anddiskettedrivestothesystemboard. Twoorthree typesofsignalcablecomewithyourserver:
– IDE:ThewiderIDEsignalcablehasthreeconnectors.Oneof these
connectorsisattachedto thedrive,oneisaspare,andthethirdisattached to theprimaryor secondaryIDEconnectoronthesystemboard.Thespare connectorcanbeused toconnectanadditionalIDEdriveto yourserver. TheCD-ROMdriveisattached toanATA100signalcable.ATA100signal cablesarecolor-coded.Theblue connectorisattached tothesystemboard. Theblackconnectorisattachedto themasterIDEdevice.Thegraymiddle connectorisattached tothesubordinateIDEdevice.
– Diskettedrive:Thenarrowersignalcablehastwoconnectors. Oneis attachedto thediskettedrive,andtheotherisattachedto theconnector (FDD1)onthesystemboard.
– SCSI:AroundSCSIcableconnectsSCSIdevicesto theintegratedSCSI controllerwithRAIDcapabilitiesonthesystemboard. Forhot-swapmodels, themaximumcablelengththatsupportsUltra320SCSIharddiskdrivesis16 inches.Formore informationaboutconnectingSCSIdevices,seetheSCSI documentation.
Installing
a
hot-swap
drive
Some servermodelssupporta maximumof six1-inch(26mm)slim-high,3.5-inch, hot-swapharddiskdrivesinthestandardhot-swapbays.Thehot-swapbaysare arrangedvertically inthestandardharddiskdrivecage;thebaynumbersare4 through9 (fromtopto bottom)withSCSIIDsof 0through5(frombottomtotop). Thehot-swapbaysarebelowtheremovable-mediadrivebays.
For increasedsecurity,thehot-swapdrivesandfillerpanelsarelockedintheserver bythehot-swaplockbar.Thehot-swaplockbarcannotbereleased,allowing installationandremovalof thehot-swapdrivesandfiller panels,unlessthekeylock ontheserverside coverisunlocked.
Notes:
1. Allhot-swapdrivesbeingused intheservershouldhavethesamespeed rating;mixingspeedratingswillcausealldrivesto operateatthelowerspeed. 2. You donothave toturnofftheserverto installhot-swapdrivesinthehot-swap
drive bays.However,youmustturnoff theserverwhenperforminganysteps thatinvolveinstallingorremovingcables.
3. TheSCSIIDfor eachhot-swapharddiskdrive isprintedonthehot-swaplock bar.

3. Removethehot-swaplockbar: a. Unlocktheside-coverlock.
b. Rotatethehot-swaplockbarforwardandremoveitfromthebezel.Ifthe hot-swaplockbarwillnotrotate,pressthetopof thehot-swaplockbarto releasethelockmechanism.
4. Removethefillerpanelfromoneoftheemptyhot-swapbaysbyinsertingyour finger intothedepressionattheleftside ofthefillerpanelandpullingitaway fromtheserver.
5. Installtheharddiskdriveinthehot-swapbay:
a. Ensure thatthetrayhandleisopen(thatis,perpendiculartothedrive). b. Align thedrive assemblywiththeguiderailsinthebay.
c. Gently pushthedriveassembly intothebay untilthedrivestops. d. Pushthetrayhandleto theclosed (locked)position.
e. Check theharddiskdrivestatusindicatortoverifythattheharddiskdrive is operating properly.
If theamber harddiskdrive statusLEDfora driveislitcontinuously,this indicatesthatdrive isfaultyandneedstobereplaced.Ifthegreenharddisk drive activityLED isflashing,thisindicatesthatthedrive isbeingaccessed.
Note: IfyourserverisconfiguredforRAIDoperationusingtheintegratedSCSI controllerwithRAIDcapabilitiesoranoptionalServeRAIDcontroller,you mightneedtoreconfigureyourdiskarraysafterinstallingharddisk drives.SeetheServeRAIDdocumentationontheIBMServeRAID SupportCDforadditionalinformationabout RAIDoperationand completeinstructionsfor usingServeRAIDManager.

You canincreasetheamountof memoryinyourserverbyinstallingmemory modules.Yourserverusesindustry-standardPC2100double-data-rate(DDR)dual inlinememorymodules(DIMMs).
Notes:
1. Thesystem boardcontainsfourDIMMconnectorsandsupports two-way memoryinterleaving.
2. TheDIMMoptionsavailablefor yourserverare128MB,256MB,512MB,1 GB,and2GB.Yourserversupportsa minimumof 256MBandamaximumof 8 GBofsystem memory.
3. Theamountof usablememorywillbereduceddependingonthesystem configuration.Acertainamountof memorymustbereservedfor system resources.TheBIOSwilldisplaythetotalamountofinstalledmemoryandthe amountof configuredmemory.

6. Touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontaining theDIMMto anyunpaintedmetal surfaceontheserver.Then removethenew DIMMfromthepackage.
7. Gently opentheretainingcliponeach endoftheDIMMslot.TurntheDIMMso thatthepins aligncorrectlywiththeconnector.
8. Insert theDIMMinto theconnector.FirmlypresstheDIMMstraightdowninto theconnectorbyapplyingpressure onbothends oftheDIMMsimultaneously. Theretaining clipssnap intothelockedpositionwhentheDIMMisfirmlyseated intheconnector.IfthereisagapbetweentheDIMMandtheretaining clips,the DIMMhasnotbeencorrectlyinstalled.Opentheretaining clips,removethe DIMM,andthenreinsertit.
