From the Office of Religious Education
David M Wallace, Director| [email protected] | (540) 635-3780
Darryl & Susan Adams, Confirmation Coordinator & RE Assistant | [email protected] On June 24, the universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, our parish’s patron. According to the Handbook of Indulgences, “A plenary indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who devoutly make a visit to a parish church on its titular feast day…this visit is to include the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed.” A reminder about how to obtain a plenary indulgence: “Beside the exclusion of all attachment to sin, even venial sin, the requirements for gaining a plenary indulgence are the performance of the indulgenced work and fulfillment of three conditions: sacramental confession, eucharistic communion, and prayer for the pope’s inten-tions.”
Who is St John the Baptist? “‘There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.’ John was
‘filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb’ by Christ himself, whom the Virgin Mary had just conceived by the Holy Spirit. Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth thus became a visit from God to his people. John is ‘Elijah [who] must come.’ The fire of the Spirit dwells in him and makes him the forerunner of the coming Lord. In John, the precursor, the Holy Spirit completes the work of ‘[making] ready a people prepared for the Lord.’ John the Baptist is ‘more than a prophet.’ In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Isra-el; he is the ‘voice’ of the Consoler who is coming. As the Spirit of truth will also do, John ‘came to bear witness to the light.’ In John’s sight, the Spirit thus brings to completion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God…Behold, the Lamb of God.’ Finally, with John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit begins the restoration to man of ‘the divine likeness,’ prefiguring what he would achieve with and in Christ. John’s baptism was for repentance; baptism in water and the Spirit will be a new birth.” (CCC 717-720)
CCD 2021-2022: We are hoping to resume regular in-person catechism classes in the fall, on Tuesday afternoons/
evenings. We are looking for catechists who can help rebuild our program. Visit the parish website for online enrollment. We need students to fill our classrooms. Who’s ready to help proclaim and build the Kingdom?

FAUSTINA OF DIVINE MERCY SAID: October 3, 1936. During the rosary
today, I suddenly saw a ciborium with the Blessed Sacrament. The ciborium was uncovered and quite filled with hosts. From the ciborium came a voice: These
hosts have been received by souls con-verted through your prayer and suffer-ing. At this point, I felt God's presence as
a child would; I felt strangely like a
child.” (St. Faustina Diary 709) Used with permission of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the BVM

3:00-4:00pm. Prayers are said together with children taking
turns leading a decade . Chaplet of Divine Mercy at
3:05 and the Holy Rosary is prayed at 3:40. The
pur-pose of this hour is to give children a designated time with their parents to pray with their peers, to practice leading prayers, and to learn the importance of sacred silence. Some children may not be ready for the whole hour, so please just come for as long as you are able. Any time with Jesus is time well spent! We ask the par-ish to please pray for these children that they may devel-op a lifelong devotion to Jesus in Adoration! We also ask your pardon during this hour as the children learn the beauty of sacred silence. Any questions: Please contact: Jack & Heather Hsu at [email protected]
Thank you for your prayers!
Any name added to the Prayer List will remain there for 3 months. The request may be renewed by calling the parish office. Please let us know when a name can be removed from
either prayer list. You may also request prayers by contacting our parish prayer chain at [email protected]
