GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE
ADMINISTRATOR’S CORNER
NEW MEMBERS
PRELATE
The 2012-13 Board of Officers of the Dale City Family Center #2165 was installed on April 29. Marty Rachford is our Governor. Mike Penn serves as Prelate, and Todd House (2 year) and Bodie Samples (1 year) continue as trustees. The other positions were contested and the results are not known as of this writing.
Junior Governor Nominees are James Woodbridge and Mike Pigott;
Treasurer Jay Slovic and John McCauley; 3-year Trustee Norm Catterton, Lyon Woodard, and David Gulnac.
Thank you to all nominees and their interest and commitment to volunteering their time and energy for the continued success of the lodge. Thanks to all members who came out and supported their candidates.
Marcel Bedard conducted the installation of officers as he has for the past several years. After installation ceremonies, Marcel was presented with the Governor’s Excellence for Community Service Award. For many years Marcel has provided numerous hours of community service on behalf of our lodge. He has represented us at various activities with local charities and organizations. We have received a Superior Rating for Community Service from Moose International because of Marcel’s efforts. It takes a special kind of person with dedication to serve as Marcel has.
Please join me in saluting Marcel as Dale City Family Center #2165 Volunteer Extraordinaire.

Board of Officers
Doing so maintains our rights as a private organization – and can, quite literally, save our lodge from financial ruin.
Let us pose three questions:
For those of you who play golf, say you’ve received a very nice present – 3-year membership at an exclusive golf club where your doctor plays every Wednesday. When you walk into the club house with a guest and are asked to show your card, do you roll your eyes and groan? Or do you relish the chance to pull that card out of your wallet?
Many of our members who travel are also members of the American Automobile Association (AAA) or the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) – both of which have programs enabling their members to enjoy reduced rates in roadside hotels nationwide. But when you check in you have to show your AAA or AARP card to receive that lower rate. Does this irritate you?
Finally, consider this one carefully. You’re the Jr.
Past Governor walking into your lodge’s Social Quarters on a busy Friday afternoon, the door opened for you by a polite, smiling thirtyish man you don’t quite recognize but who’s arrived at the same time. Must be a fairly new member, you think. Inside, the bartender, recognizing you (and knowing how much it irritates you) decides against asking for your card. You place two dollars on the bar, request and receive a beer. Then, not wanting to offend the young man now standing next to you, the bartender also draws a beer for him without asking for a card.
At the next month’s lodge meeting, then, this nightmare: your Administrator’s trembling hand holds an invoice for more than $90,000 in back federal income taxes, interest, penalties, and fees. The invoice has been presented to him that day by the same pleasant your man you’d stood next to at the bar that Friday afternoon! He was the regional IRS agent – and you had been right there when he witnessed the lodge operating as a public accommodation.
This scenario is not an unrealistic exaggeration. It has actually happened to more than one Moose lodge in recent years. Their officers and longtime members didn’t want to be
“bothered” with having to show their membership cards. Well, they paid a substantial price to be freed of that “bother”.
So, please think about this the next time the bartender respectfully requests to see your membership card before serving you.

LOW BACK PAIN
May Health Column by Rayma Skinner
Spring is here in full force and so is yard work and spring cleaning. A universal human experience usually follows: low back pain.
The lower back starts below the rib cage is called the lumbar region. Pain can be intense and is one of the top causes of missed work.
Low back pain, like the common cold, gets better on its own and when it does not, there are effective treatments.
! Symptoms range from a dull ache to a stabbing or shooting sensation. The pain may make it hard to move or stand up straight. Acute back pain comes on suddenly, often after an injury from sports or heaving lifting. Pain that lasts more than three months is considered chronic. If your pain is not better in 72 hours, consult a doctor.
! Symptoms that require urgent care. Severe back pain after a fall or injury should be check out by a health care professional. Other signs that require seeing a doctor include a loss of bowel or bladder control, leg weakness, fever, and pain when coughing or urinating.
! Muscle strain or sciatica? The back pain that follows heavy lifting or exercising too hard is often caused by muscle strain.
But sometimes back pain can be related to a disc that bulges or ruptures. If a bulging or ruptured disc presses on the sciatic nerve, pain may run from the buttock down one leg. This pain is called sciatica.
! There are many causes of back pain and your pain may come from a combination of factors.
" Is your job the cause of your back pain? If your job involves lifting, pulling, or anything that twists the spine, it may contribute to back pain. However, sitting at a desk all day comes with risks of its own if your chair is uncomfortable or you tend to slouch.
" Is what you are carrying causing your back pain? Although you may wear your purse, backpack, or briefcase over your shoulder, it is the lower back that supports the upper body–including any extra weight you carry. An overstuffed bag can strain the lower back, especially if you carry it day after day. If you must tote a heavy load, consider switching to a wheeled briefcase.
" Is your exercise the back pain culprit? Overdoing it at the gym, golf course, soft ball, gardening, and other recreational activities is one of the most common causes of overextended muscles leading to low back pain. You are especially vulnerable if you tend to be inactive during the work week and then spend hours in those activities on the weekend.
" Maybe your posture is the cause. Your back supports weight best when you do not slouch. The proper posture is to sit with good lumbar support for your lower back, shoulders back, and feet resting on a low stool. When standing, keep weight evenly balanced on both fee., Listen to you Mom and “Stand up straight!”
! Who is at risk? Most people first get low back pain in their 30s. The odds of additional attacks increase with age. Being overweight, having an inactive lifestyle, and jobs requiring heaving lifting can contribute to low back pain.
! How can I treat low back pain? There are several ways to treat low back pain. Some require a doctor but many are available without a physician.
" A heating pad or warm baths may provide temporary pain relief.
" Bed rest or stay active? When your back hurts, you may not feel like getting out of bed. But, if the problems is muscle strain, doctors recommend returning to your normal activities. Studies suggest that any more than a day or two of bed rest can actually make the pain worse and reduce muscle tone and flexibility.
" Yoga. If back pain does not go away in three months, there is evidence that yoga can help. A recent study found that people who took 12 weeks of yoga classes had fewer symptoms of back pain and the benefits lasted several months after the classes were finished. Conventional stretching also may work.
" Spinal manipulations. Chiropractors and some osteopathic doctors use spinal manipulation to treat low back pain by applying pressure with their hands to bones and surrounding tissues. This treatment is not for everyone.
" Massage therapy. A study funded by the government suggests that massage may help relieve chronic low back pain. After 10 weeks, people who had weekly massages had less pain and were better able to go about their daily activities than people who got traditional care. That was true no matter what type of massage they got and the benefits lasted at least six months.
" Acupuncture. The evidence is mixed. In 2009, a study of several hundred people with long-lasting back pain found that those who had simulated acupuncture (involving toothpicks tapping the skin) got the same benefits as those who had acupuncture with real needles. After eight weeks, both groups had greater relief than people who did not have acupuncture.
" Medications. Mild back pain often feels better with over the counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Pain-relieving creams may be helpful for muscle aches. For severe or chronic pain, your doctor may recommend prescription medication.
" Surgery. If long-lasting back pain is interfering with your daily life, and other treatments have not provided relief, you may be a candidate for surgery.
" Physical therapy. If back pain has left you inactive for a long time, a rehabilitation program can help you strengthen your muscles and get back to your daily activities. A physical therapist can guide you through stretches, strength exercises, and low-impact cardio that will help you be fitter without straining your back.
" Strengthening the back. Two types of strength training moves that may benefit the lower back are flexion and extension exercises. In flexion exercises, you bend forward to stretch the muscles of the back and hips. In extension exercises, you bend backward to develop muscles that support the spine.
! Prevention is worth a pound of cure. There is no way to prevent back pain as you age but there are steps that you can take to lower the risk: Stay at a healthy weight, exercise regularly, lift with your legs–not your back, and make sure your work station position is not contributing to your pain.
