The strike may be controlled to a precision of ∼300 µ m since the resolution of the quadrature system is 150 µ m . When the currents are reversed the shaft begins decelerating and the controller enters “quad- rant 2”. The shaft is decelerated until it reaches the position where it changes direction as indicated by the quadrature counter. At this point there is no physical change to the system and the coil currents are kept the same; however this change in the shaft direction defines the point at which the controller state moves into “quadrant 3”. The shaft now accelerates upwards until it reaches the position defined by “switch-point 2”. Here the coil currents are reversed again and the shaft begins decelerating; this is accompanied by the controller state moving into “quadrant 4”. The shaft con- tinues to decelerate and at the point where its motion changes direction again the controller enters the capture state. Because the shaft will have some small downward velocity by the time the change of direction is detected, it is necessary to reverse the current flow again for a short period of time, typically a few hundred microseconds, to arrest the residual velocity. This “kickback” proved to be necessary for reliable target capture.

The optimized theoretical Gaussian filters were used for filter selection. Sand- wich absorption filters having the most similar spectral transmittance as the theoretical Gaussian filters were selected. Absorption filters were chosen over interference filters since the spectral sensitivity of interference filters varies across the image plane, leading to wavelength-dependent spatial non- uniformities. Another filter selection method was to select the sandwich filters whose peak wavelengths were equally spaced across the spectrum of inter- est. Instead of trying to calculate corresponding metric values for all possible combinations (4.3 ⇥ 10 10 ) of filters, which was not practical when non-linear optimization was applied, this method reduced the computing time by reducing the candidate filter combinations to 1.8 ⇥ 10 6 . This was a constrained “brute- force” approach. Selecting filters best matching the theoretical Gaussian filters resulted in noticeable improvement in noise and colorimetric perfor- mance. Constraining candidates to specific wavelength regions did not result in optimal performance. This novel technique provides better insight for filter selection in multi-spectral camera design.

PreVault is a pre-cast concrete pavilion completed for the Aarhus Festuge (Festival) in Denmark. The festival is among the largest cultural events in Scandinavia and showcases both local, national and international artists. The structure was designed and constructed as part of a master class lead by Dave Pigram from supermanoeuvre & the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in collaboration with Ole Egholm Pedersen and Niels Martin Larsen of Aarhus School of Architecture (AAA).�The project brings Dave Pigram's research on computational form-finding for compression-only structures; and algorithmic feedback between design conception and design realisation; together with Ole Egholm Pederson's research into concrete tectonics and the use of folded PETG moulds.�The compression-only form is computed through a digital hanging net (dynamic-relaxation) form-finding process. A second custom algorithm is then used to unroll; number and annotate; and add tabs, holes and calibrated dashed cut lines to each unique component; and to nest the resultant pieces onto sheets.�The final structure comprises 130 unique concrete components with cast-in reinforcement and an engineered demountable joint of polymer zip-ties. Lightweight Massively Parallel Suffix Array Construction

In this thesis, we design and implement a lightweight massively parallel SACA on the GPU using the prefix-doubling technique. Our prefix-doubling implementa- tion is memory-efficient and can successfully construct the suffix array for input strings as large as 640 megabytes (MB) on Tesla P100 GPU. On large datasets, our implementation achieves a speedup of 7-16x over the fastest, highly opti- mized, OpenMP-accelerated suffix array constructor, libdivsufsort, that leverages the CPU shared memory parallelism. The performance of our algorithm relies on several high-performance parallel primitives such as radix sort, conditional filtering, inclusive prefix sum, random memory scattering, and segmented sort. We evaluate the performance of our implementation over a variety of real-world datasets with respect to its runtime, throughput, memory usage, and scalability. We compare our results against libdivsufsort that we run on a Haswell compute node equipped with 24 cores. Our GPU SACA is simple and compact, consisting of less than 300 lines of readable and effective source code. Additionally, we de- sign and implement a fast and lightweight algorithm for checking the correctness of the suffix array.

Our starting point for the design of an efficient suffix array construction algorithm is Seward copy algorithm. Within this algorithm we replace the procedure used for sorting the small buckets (i.e. the groups of suffixes having the first two characters in common). Instead of using Bentley-McIlroy ternary quicksort we use a more sophisticated technique. More precisely, we sort the small buckets using Bentley-Sedgewick multikey quicksort and we stop the recursion when we reach a predefined depth L (that is, when we have to sort a group of suffixes with a length-L common prefix).
