Fig 1: Trend of Total Quantity and Value of Coffee Exported: December November 2020

World coffee exports amounted to 9.7 million bags in October 2020, compared with 9.4 million in October 2019. Exports for 12 months (November 2019-October 2020) decreased by 3.7% to 127.5 million bags from 132.45 million bags the previous period (November 2018-October 2019). The ICO Composite Indicator price increased by 3.6% to 109.70 US cents/lb in November 2020 from US cents/lb 105.85 in October 2020. Global coffee production for 2019/20 is estimated at 168.55 million bags versus consumption of 167.59 million bags. A delayed start of Vietnam’s harvest and concerns over the prolonged drought in Brazil and damage by hurricanes in Central America boosted the prices.

STATE RELATIONS DEPARTMENT REPORT BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING December 8, 2020 (Current Information as November 23, 2020)

No states passed a new or expanded monopoly protection (“franchise”) law in 2020. A bill in Alabama that would have replaced the patchwork of such local laws with a statewide law failed to pass. In Georgia an interim “Senate Alcohol Franchise Law Study Committee” was created with our support, although in the end the committee did not meet due to COVID-19 restrictions which prevented them from holding any in-person hearings, which would have been necessary to address their mandate. A bill in Massachusetts related to changes in the beer franchise laws that would create capacity cap exemptions has not yet passed the House, after clearing the Senate in July, but we are watching it closely due to the bad precedent such bills would set for potential wine inclusion down the line. A similar bill in Oklahoma failed to pass this year. Wholesalers continued their push for the expansion of “at rest” provisions in a number of states this year, arguing that some “paper wholesalers” are clearing wines to retail licensees without utilizing traditional wholesale models, and thereby undermining the 3-tier system. We have opposed these efforts arguing that they impede things such as “just-in-time” delivery and add unnecessary costs to the supply chain. Despite our opposition, bills were passed this year in the District of Columbia (4-hour at-rest requirement) and changes strengthening to the regulations in North Carolina were implemented. Similar bills failed to pass in both Missouri and New York this year.

One particularly interesting plant this month is Iris Foetidissima, known rather unkindly as the “stinking Iris”. In midsummer, it bears flowers of a rather dull purple, suffused with yellow. But in November, it really comes into its own. Scarlet red berries now open from the seed pods, and these are a magnificent sight. With luck, they will grace the plants throughout winter. This Iris is easy to grow, and is fond of dry sites in shade, which makes it an asset in an environment where it is normally difficult for plants to thrive.

There was considerable concern among Navy leaders that the evacuation would be vulnerable to enemy attack, with particular worry that Soviet submarines might intervene. Commander Naval Forces Far East, VADM Turner Joy reinstituted a submarine patrol of La Perouse Strait to guard against Soviet submarines getting into open water east of Japan. On 12 December an ASW hunter- killer group (TG 96.7) commenced exercises off the east coast of Honshu, formed around escort carrier Bairoko, using U.S. submarines as a target. There wasn’t much that could be done about Soviet submarines at Vladivostok getting into the Sea of Japan. Admiral Joy also directed that the SEVENTH Fleet be free to move about on short notice and not be tied down near the evacuation area. As a result, the commander of Task Force 90, RADM Doyle, was given responsibility and assets to provide air cover and surface gunfire support in the evacuation area. Fortunately, a Soviet submarine threat never materialized although there were multiple false alarms. (In the next H-Gram I’ll discuss the USS Mckean (DD- 784) 18 December 1950 incident, which some accounts claim sank a Soviet submarine).

The purpose of this study was to improve the yield of fermented Tremella polysaccharide (FTP) by optimizing the medium and to explore the effect of optimization on the structure. In this paper, the Plackett–Burman design and response surface method were used to optimize the fermentation medium of Tremella spore GT2# for FTP production. The results of the Plackett–Burman design showed that potato extract, glucose, and peptone were the main factors. The Box–Behnken experiment and regression analysis determined that the optimal concentrations of potato extract, glucose, and peptone were 22.01%, 29.38 g/L, and 2.61 g/L, respectively. After optimization, the fermentation period shortened from 5 days to 3 days, and the yield of FTP increased from 10.75 g/L to 12.50 g/L, which was in good agreement with the predicted value (12.36 g/L). Characterization of FTP obtained before and after optimization was carried out, and the results showed that medium optimization had significant effects on the primary structure of FTP, including molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, and proportion. After optimization, the content of acid polysaccharide increased, and the glycoside bonds changed from a-configuration to ß-configuration.

While we can’t wait for the warm glow of the holidays, we have an exciting few months to look forward to first. The Great Pumpkin will soon arrive to our front drive, and we’ll be kicking off a great new series of Artisan in Residence programming, this year curated with the team at Yankee magazine. Guests will get to enjoy Fondue Village private dining earlier than ever before, with a special Alpine harvest menu created to celebrate the season. The wintry aprés-ski menu will return just as the first snowflakes fall in December and will run through winter.
