FLY LINES &
FISH TALES
Prez Says:
What goes up must come down.
As the summer comes to an end cool long nights help cool the water temps down. I always look forward to fall fishing. Big fish eating small fish to bulk up for winter is where the angler can be rewarded.
I kept this in mind as I rode up the mountain for our Lake Alpine outing. Being the last weekend in September, the mountains are in the cool down mode, but this year summer lasted a bit longer.
After launching my float tube in the lake I found that the water temp was 67 degrees. In the trout’s world this is like beer in the desert.
Way too warm, but we must fish.
We are the Tracy Fly Fishers and we have to prove that we can
catch a fish or two, and with some luck and some deep lines, we landed a few nice fish.
Our tent cabins were nice as we needed not to raise a tent and the only set up was Mike Carlson’s super outside kitchen. He makes a mean breakfast burrito. Camp was up on a hill and one had to be careful walking at night because you could easily find yourself rolling down the hill. Real quickly one could find yourself face down in the dirt and the one guy that can help you is hugging a tree hoping he doesn’t fall. One sometimes has to be a little un-leveled to realize how good floating on water just feels right. It makes floating in a small craft on a lake feel
somewhat normal. When we catch and land a fish, going up and down the hill seams worth it.
The night time temps were comfortable as we told many
stories around the camp fire and a few lies as well. We even found ourselves down at the lodge bs- ing with the locals and having a couple of adult beverages.
Now that I’m back down the hill I can’t wait for next year to go back up!
Keep it tight!

October, 2012
September’s Guest Speaker:
“Our speaker for October is Keith Kaneko, fly fishing guide and destination travel agent.
A self-described refugee from 'corporate America,' Keith established his own fly fishing guide service
(www.norcalflyfishing.com) more than a decade ago. He guides Northern
California waters such as the Feather, American, Yuba, and other Central Valley rivers for trout, shad, stripers and steelhead. In addition, he founded Angling On The Fly Travel
(www.AnglingOnTheFly.com) about 7 years ago, and has been helping clients book fishing trips to faraway destinations, as well as constantly exploring and developing new fly fishing opportunities around the globe. One of Keith's favorite local fisheries is the Lower Yuba River, and he will be sharing his knowledge on how to maximize your success while fly fishing this
challenging fishery. This informative and educational presentation is well suited for fly anglers from novice to advanced. FISH ON!”
PROGRAM SUMMARY This in-depth presentation covers the Lower Yuba River from Englebright Dam
downriver to Daguerre Point Dam. This section of river is home to native Rainbow Trout, and receives runs of Steelhead and Salmon during certain months of the season.
This presentation will reveal the seasons of this year- round fishery. Also, a
complete hatch profile will be reviewed and how it relates to fly selection. Finally, an overview of effective
techniques and presentations will be discussed to help maximize angling success.
The Lower Yuba is a wonderful resource for fly anglers in the Central Valley.

Education:
Intro to fly fishing:
On Saturday, October 6 the Tracy Fly Fishers had their
‘Introduction to Fly Fishing’
class.
The class was held at Art Freiler Park and was attended by 11 new members- including 3 new youth members.
Students learned the basics of the sport and participated in: Knot tying, Casting, Safety, Local and State Fishing Regulations.
They also had the opportunity to learn some basic Entomology and Fly pattern identification.
All had a great time and are looking forward to putting their newly acquired knowledge to use on the Stanislaus River!
Rick Clemens, 2012 Education Chair, led the class with support from fellow TFF members: Pat Ferguson, Rudy Lazard, Dave and Kathy Herimoto.
2013Installation Dinner:
2013 Installation dinner will be January 5
th, 2013 with tickets costing $40.00 each. We will be seating 240 for this event, 20 more than last year.
Tables will seat eight. Please plan you groups accordingly.
There will be tri-tip for those who do not eat crab, along with (2) door prizes with everyone in attendance eligible.
Introduction to flies.
Intro to tying knots.
Last year was a great success and we are anticipating that you will make 2013 even better. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming event with their bib on!
(tickets go on sale this month) -Stan Elijah
Intro to fly fishing, only the
beginning!
Conservation:
I am a Preschool Special Ed teacher and the floating fly line comes in handy for many projects that preschool children make: necklaces, lacing, hanging art, fishing poles...I would be happy to collect it and give it away to other preschool teachers. Dave or I attend the meetings pretty regularly; we could have the members bring it to the meetings?
Thanks for the consideration.

Events and Outings:
Pit River :
The Pitt, down by the old
school house. As you can see, the flows in some of our old favorite places were high again this year. You just need to find new places.
One thing nice about our trip to the Pitt, it’s close to other great side trip locations
(location,location,location!).
Bob and Jeff made this day excursion to the Fall River.
Good fishing. Needed 7x tippet to keep from spooking the trout in this crystal clear water.
Must have been good fishing.
Feather River
Steelhead/Salmon outing:
Saturday, November 10
TFF will once again hit the Feather River…HARD!
The Feather River is a classic Steelhead and Salmon river in Central California and the Tracy Fly Fishers have been doing well fishing for these trophies since 1998!
As with all migratory fish, fishing can be great one day and slow the next- but some of us have been “secretly” fishing over the past month- so we feel confident that we will be there at the right time. BUT- even if the Feather River is slow, the Yuba River can sometimes work- and is only about 30 minutes away! The area we fish on the Feather River is called
‘Buck’s Island’ and is within the Oroville Wildlife area. No special permits or licenses are necessary- but you will need a 2012 California Fishing License AND a 2012 Steelhead Card- the card is only about $6/7 additional dollars and can be picked up at any local Sporting Goods location.
We will have a Pre-Outings meeting on Thursday, November 8 at 7pm at the Starbucks located inside the Safeway store located on Corral Hollow and 11
thStreet.
We will at that time discuss travel accommodations, equipment, and any other details.
Please review the Map and suggested Equipment list.
See you there!
Note: the “take season” for
salmon has ended so any
salmon caught need to be
released.
