VMware Horizon 6.0 Overview

3.1

Introduction To VMware Horizon 6.0 with View

VMware Horizon 6.0 with View is a desktop virtualization solution that delivers virtual desktop services. It is available as a standalone offering-Horizon 6.0 with View Standard Edition-or as part of the VMware Horizon family in the Advanced and Enterprise editions. Where security and availability are both high priorities, you can use Horizon 6.0 with View to simplify and automate the management of desktops and securely deliver desktops as a service to users from a central location. A single administration console provides granular levels of control, allowing you to customize the end-user experience, access, and personalization to support corporate policy. End users get a familiar, personalized environment that they can access from any number of devices anywhere throughout the enterprise or from remote locations. And as an administrator, you have centralized control, efficiency, and security by having desktop data in the data center.

VMware Horizon 6.0 leverages desktop virtualization with View and builds on these capabilities, allowing IT to deliver virtualized and remoted desktop and applications through a single platform and supports users with access to all their Windows and online resources through one unified workspace. By delivering secure access to applications and data to any device, when and where the user needs it, VMware Horizon 6.0 with View provides end users with the highest levels of mobility and flexibility.

3.2

VMware Horizon 6.0 with View Infrastructure

The VMware Horizon 6.0 with View inftastructure contains a series of components, including:

 VMware vSphere 5.5.x including ESXi 5.5.x , VMware vCenter 5.5.x and vSphere Client 5.5.x;

 View Composer 6.0.0;

3.3

Challenges for Virtual Desktop Inftastructure

For Virtual Desktop Inftastructure scenarios, there are lots of challenges, including:

A boot storm is caused when a large population of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) users boot up which always causes serious pressure for servers and storage system.

A login storm is caused when a large population of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) users log into their desktop which causes serious pressure for servers and storage system.

Boot storm and login storm are always two huge challenges for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure which bring difficulties for deploying and manage

(8)

virtualization scenarios.

 -virus Scanning Storm

Scheduled anti-virus scanning can cause extremely high pressure for servers and storage system with large scale of random read IOPS.

During steady state, about ten random write IOPS would be caused for each virtual desktop, which would also cause high pressure for storage system.

4.3.2

Storage Features for HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T

Feature 1 --- Outstanding Performance

Storage performance is a complex mix of drive, interface, controller, cache, protocol, SAN, HBA, driver, and operating system considerations. The overall performance of the storage architecture is typically measured in terms of maximum throughput, maximum I/O operations per second (IOPS), and latency or response time. Although each of these performance measurements is important, IOPS and latency are the most relevant to server virtualization. Most modern SANs use a combination of high-speed disks, slower-speed disks, and large memory caches. A storage controller cache can improve performance during burst transfers or when the same data is accessed frequently by storing it in the cache memory, which is typically several orders of magnitude faster than the physical disk I/O. However, it is not a substitute for adequate disk spindles because caches are ineffective during heavy write operations.

(17)

2014-12-23 HUAWEI Technologies Co., Ltd Page17, Total24

storage feature, it is easy combining solid state disk, traditional SAS and SATA or NL-SAS disk to implement high performance using Smart Tier. Solid state disks producted by HUAWEI can be used for Tier 0 as the high performance layer, SAS disks are used as the performance layer, and the NL-SAS disks are used as capacity layer.

SmartTier Feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage System

Figure5

Using SmartTier feature, hotspot data is migrated from SAS or NL-SAS/SATA disk to solid state disk automatically, which means that the hotspot data would be on the high performance layer and it is easy to implement high IO performance.

Feature 2 --- Multiple Drive Types Supported

HUWEI OceanStor S5000T series Storage System supports SAS, NL SAS, and SATA, FC and SSD disks, fitting into various scenarios. For high performance it is recommended to choose solid state disk (SSD), for both performance and capacity it is recommended to choose SSD and SAS disks, for capacity NL-SAS and SATA disks are recommended.

Feature 3 --- Multipathing

In all cases, multipathing should be used. VMware ESXi 5.x supports three native multipathing policies, including Most Recently Used (MRU), Fixed (Fixed) and Round Robin (RR). These multipathing policies apply to VMware's Native Multipathing Path Selection Plugins (PSP).

In this solution, Round Robin is used as the default multipathing policy, and ALUA protocol is used as the default storage interconnection protocol (SATP).

The method for configuring storage interconnection protocol and multipathing policy is showing as following.

(18)

Execute the following commands:

# esxcli storage nmp satp rule add --satp=VMW_SATP_ALUA --vendor="HUAWEI" --description "HUAWEI SAN Storage"

# esxcli storage nmp satp set --default-psp=VMW_PSP_RR --satp VMW_SATP_ALUA

# reboot

Feature 4 --- Multiple Front-end Interfaces Supported

Multiple front-end interconnection interaces are supported by HUAWEI OceanStor S5500T storage system, including 1Gbps/10Gbps iSCSI, 2/4/8/16Gbps FC, 10Gbps FCoE, 10Gbps Toe, etc.

Feature 5 --- Thin Provisioning

HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T series Storage System allows on-demand allocation of storage space rather than the traditional method of pre-allocating all storage space at the initial stage. It is more efficient because the amount of resources used is close to the amount of resources allocated. In this way, the initial purchase cost and total cost of ownership are reduced.

The thin provisioning feature for HUAWEI OceanStor S5000T Storage is called SmartThin, showing as follow.

Solution Validation

4.4.1

Validation Tool --- VMware ViewPlanner

VMware ViewPlanner is a tool designed to simulate a large scale deployment of virtualized desktop systems and study its effects on an entire virtualized infrastructure. The tool is scalable from a few virtual machines running on one VMware ESX/ESXi host up to hundreds of virtual machines distributed across a cluster of ESX/ESXi hosts.

ViewPlanner assists in the setup and configuration of the testing infrastructure, runs a set of application operations selected to be representative of real-world user applications, and reports data on the latencies of those operations. The version of VMware ViewPlanner used for validating this validation is 3.0.0.

The following picture shows the test model of VMware ViewPlanner. ViewPlanner uses the application controller to push virtual desktops to simulate the real-world users’ applications.

(20)

VMware ViewPlanner Test Model

Figure8

ViewPlanner simulates application workloads for various user types, (task workers, knowledge workers, and power users) by running applications typically used in a Windows desktop environment. During the execution of a workload, applications are randomly called to perform common desktop user operations, including open, save, close, minimize and maximize windows; view an HTML page, insert text, insert words and numbers, conduct a slideshow, view a video, send and receive email, and compress files. View Planner uses a patent pending watermark technique to quantify the user experience and measure application latency on a user client/remote machine. ViewPlanner 3.0.0 workloads come from the following applications:

 Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook 2007/2010  Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.0 or higher

 Document browse  Picture album browse  Mozilla Firefox 7.x or higher  Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.x or higher  Archiving software
