Participants of
the World Oncology
Forum are raising
the alarm about
the increasing
devastation caused
by cancer across the
world, and calling
on governments
and policy makers
to pursue new
strategies to avoid an
impending epidemic.
The number of men, women and children who die from
cancer every year is set to double over 25 years; the worst
affected communities will be the ones least equipped to
detect and treat the disease and care for patients.
Current strategies for controlling cancer are clearly not
working: preventable cancers are not being prevented;
patients are suffering and dying unnecessarily from cancers
that are detectable and treatable; and the model for
developing effective new curative therapies is
not fit for purpose.
The World Oncology Forum, a closed meeting of 100 top
international cancer experts and leading journalists, is calling
for determined global action on a set of strategies that have
been shown to work and are achievable everywhere in the
world. Acting now is essential to ensure governments deliver
on the promise they made at the World Health Assembly
2012 to reduce premature deaths from non-communicable
diseases by 25% by 2025. Delivering on that promise
would save 1.5 million people every year from suffering
and dying unnecessarily from cancer.

the local needs

• In Israel, the second edition of our Conference on Breast Cancer in Young
Women
• On the global level, a comprehensive e-learning programme
For everybody, independently on the geographic area, we will make available
the continuation of the Master Online Advanced Oncology – in collaboration with
the University of Ulm, Germany – the Certificates of Competence in lymphoma
and in breast cancer, the network of our Clinical Training Centres where junior
and senior oncologists can spend from 3 to 6 months in the department of their
interest.
In the meantime, and as always, further collaboration with ECCO, EONS, ESMO,
ESOP, ESSO, ESTRO, OECI and UICC will be continued.

e-grandrounds®: are weekly sessions on hot-topics held every Thursday from 18.15 to 19.00 CET without commercial sponsorship and are CME and ESMO-MORA accredited.
e-oncoreviews®: are monthly sessions held on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 18.15 to 19.00 CET designed to offer a balance and comprehensive overview on a specific topic, be it a tumour type, a type of therapy, diagnostic or therapeutic approach.

This educational programme on soft-tissue sarcoma
is offered free-of-charge as an online resource with
quiz interactivity, animation and narration to provide
a dynamic experience.
Completion of the programme offers 3 CME credits.
Over the years there has been increasing acceptance of active surveillance for prostate cancer as an alternative to radical treatment for men with low risk prostate cancer. Unless the overdiagnosis of indolent prostate cancer is reduced by alternative diagnostic strategies, active surveillance will continue to play an important role. The challenge is to determine how new imaging methods and biomarkers can improve patient selection and how to incorporate drugs into active surveillance programs.
ESO 2nd Inside Track Conference “Active Surveillance for Low Risk Prostate Cancer” is aimed to be an interactive educational activity in which attendees will enjoy presentations by internationally renowned researchers on active surveillance, who have helped develop and evaluate technologies that may change the selection and monitoring of patients, and take part in workshops on multiple topics, from the different experiences on active surveillance worldwide to quality of life of patients who have accepted the observational strategy.

n ESO EducationThe Masterclass offers plenary lectures regarding state-of-the-art clinical evaluation and treatments with reference to clinical guidelines and which will conclude in take-home messages. The Clinical Sessions will be complemented by Tumour Board discussions. Furthermore, participants will deliver case presentations within small groups and discuss these with the chairmen and the faculty.
All participants will reside at the course venue and participation is compulsory throughout the course. The Masterclass will be entirely in English and fluency in English is necessary for admission. Participants of the concomitant Masterclass in Nursing Oncology will attend selected medical sessions whilst the side effects, oral therapy and palliative care sessions will be attended jointly.

The Masterclass in Oncology Nursing programme is designed for European advanced oncology nurses as a multi-professional joint event. Five intensive days of full immersion in up-to-date oncology will create a collective spirit of teaching and learning to improving clinical skills and patient care. Nursing sessions are specific nursing-oriented sessions exploring specialist practice skills such as assessment and decision making, communication skills, complex symptom management, research in nursing, psychosocial consequences of cancer therapy to mention a few.
Other sessions will provide the forum for reviewing and understanding the growing evidence base for nursing interventions and reflect on participant’s role in clinical leadership. Case studies will be presented by the participants and will explore nursing practice focusing on special aspects of care. In joint clinical sessions, nurses will, together with physicians, update their clinical knowledge about the latest issues for the management of various cancers, with an international faculty of experts. Special joint sessions will highlight and support the growing need for multidisciplinarity in chosen topics.
Practical training will be offered in smaller group optional sessions and coaching groups focusing on skills required for the management of active therapy and follow up.

n ESO EducationRecent unprecedented progress in melanoma therapies can for the first time provide hope for patients in advanced stages of the disease. However, navigating a fast-evolving treatment landscape presents a real challenge, not only for patients but also for their advocates.
With novel treatments in different stages of development, the most promising agents are often only accessible in a clinical trial setting. For this reason, access to and participation in clinical studies strongly shape the reality for stage 4 and increasingly, also stage 3 melanoma patients. The current logistical, ethical and humane challenges to melanoma patients’ enrolment in clinical trials now appeal for a change of paradigm in the design and conduct of these trials. This conference, organised jointly by m-icab and ESO, will therefore focus on patient participation in melanoma clinical research, with an update on the latest treatment developments (Session 1), how patients gain access to these (Session 2), the aspects of clinical trials that are problematic for melanoma patients (Session 3, 4) and a panel discussion involving all stakeholders on ‘the melanoma clinical trial of the future’ and on concrete steps on how patients can get involved in this process (Session 5).
In the past, m-icab has combined advisory board activites with functions of a European platform for melanoma patients. In order to stay true to our mission, to systematically address the problems faced by melanoma patients across Europe in a constructive, collaborative and result-orientated way, we need to make the step forward through a more structured organisational approach. The second day of the conference will therefore focus on the establishment of a European platform for melanoma patient advocacy (Session 6 and 7).
In addition, we will offer workshops to support capacity building in the melanoma patient advocacy community.

Within the 2013 educational offer, ESO has established a high-level course on breast cancer tailored for trained oncologists in all disciplines with the aim to provide an update on the state-of-the-art therapeutic options as well as an overview of the latest advances in the field. The programme is designed with plenary lectures as well as meet-the-professor group sessions offering balanced and blended educational contents. It furthermore presents sessions in leadership skills, which are highly relevant in consideration of the participants’ profile.
BCU will be developed as a two-level course, the first organised in 2013 and the second to be organised in 2014, with the same participants who will commit to attend a 2-year programme.
The second cohort will be developed with the first course in 2015 and the second part in 2016.

n ESO EducationThe Conference offers plenary lectures delivered by the leading experts in the field, focusing on the state-of-the-art therapies and concluding with take-home messages. Lectures will cover the current standards of modern oncology, with special attention paid to practical aspects of effective cancer treatment.
On 10 May the leading European experts, invited jointly by ESO and Medycyna Praktyczna – Onkologia, will deliver lectures on practical clinical issues, such as management on patients with neuroendocrine tumors, therapy-induced mucositis, malignant bowel obstruction and nutrition, prostate cancer, kindey cancer, etc. Fertility issues in cancer patients will be discussed, too. There will also be session on electrochemotherapy.
All lectures will be interactive. An electronic system will allow participants to answer the questions, solve the quizzes and join the speakers in clinical case discussions.
The Conference will be entirely in English (or in other languages, but simultaneously translated into English).

While many cancer patient organisations hold training initiatives for members, there are limited opportunities for highly experienced cancer patient advocacy leaders to enhance their understanding of key cancer policy issues and develop their advocacy skills. Therefore ESO, with encouragement from a number of advocacy leaders, has decided to organise a Masterclass on Cancer Patient Advocacy similar to the Masterclasses that the School runs on clinical oncology, paediatric oncology, cancer surgery, cancer nursing, oncology pharmacy and radiotherapy (in collaboration with societies such as ESMO, EONS, ESTRO, SIOPE, ESOP, ESSO etc.).

n ESO EducationThe 6th Familial Cancer Conference hosted once again at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) aims to present the advances in this field from a multidisciplinary point of view. As you know, familial cancer has become an important challenge for oncologists, geneticists, molecular biologists and other professionals, due to its implications not only at the individual but also at the familial and social level. This type of cancers affect several members of a single family, being the identification of high risk families, the knowledge of the genes responsible for specific diseases and their biological functions, the clinical follow up of mutation carriers, the development of new treatments and the discovery of tailored drugs, some of the different challenges involved. This 5-day course will take participants through the key steps in preparing a systematic review of research in cancer that they can use to guide decisions about treatment, guidelines or the design of new research. Each participant will bring a topic for a systematic review to the Masterclass, and this will form the basis of the problem-based learning approach that will be use throughout the course.
Each day of the Masterclass will include one or two formal lectures from experts in the relevant topic area, as well as group discussions relating to that topic area, drawing on the knowledge of the expert. The group discussions will be a mixture of whole-group work, and smaller discussions in which participants will be divided into small parallel groups to tackle specific issues relating to their review questions. These small groups will be facilitated by experienced systematic reviewers from the Faculty, and will conclude with feedback from one member of each small group about the specific aspect of their review.

n ESO EducationThis residential programme has been designed for medical and clinical oncologists, who wish to improve their skills or those who are preparing for the national or ESMO board exam. The programme will expose participants to a full spectrum of issues in clinical and medical oncology from a basic science to advanced knowledge of systemic therapy as well as in the multidisciplinary treatment approach. It is intended to cover all major topics of ESMO-ASCO curriculum on medical oncology.
The programme focuses on cancer pathology and molecular biology, pharmacology of anti-cancer drugs and on frequent cancers such as breast, lung, gastro-intestinal, gynaecological and head and neck cancer. Spotlight sessions will provide inside on state of the art approaches in melanoma, sarcoma, thyroid cancer and on palliative care. Furthermore, practical training will be offered in the frame of clinical case presentations, prepared and presented by the participants and faculty for an interactive discussion.
All participants will reside at the Masterclass venue and participation is mandatory throughout the course. The faculty is encouraged to stay at the venue for the entire duration of the class and interact with the students. At the end of each of the five days a learning self-assessment discussion with the chair of the course will be provided.

Although cancer is a major problem, undergraduate education on cancer medicine is still not uniform or well organized in many medical schools worldwide. It has been recognized that a complete and proper teaching portfolio should include learning on cancer control (epidemiology, prevention and screening), clinical skills, patients communications skills and palliative care.
The principle philosophy of this course is to introduce medical students to the major aspects on clinical oncology. The first day of the course is mainly dedicated to basic principles of cancer treatment, whereas the rest of the days are dealing with the diagnosis and therapeutic management of the most common tumours. The teaching is interactive with clinical case presentations and an exam every day.

A third World Oncology Forum ® - “Stop Cancer Now!: Prevent the Preventable” will be held in 2015 in Milan, Italy
Breast cancer in young women is a devastating and complex disease. Breast cancer in women under 40 strikes when these women are at the peak of their reproductive years, family life and careers and still have many years ahead of them to suffer the long-term effects of treatment or the consequences of recurrent disease. The etiology of breast cancer in this population is poorly understood and most clinical trials focus on women who are over the age of 40, thus little evidence-based data is available about the optimal management of these patients. Further research is much needed in this field. This conference is an opportunity for the latest updates on this field and a platform for generating future research concepts and collaborations. The Euro-Arab School of Oncology (EASO) is an exclusive initiative of ESO to promote and facilitate the cultural and educational exchange between Europe and the Arab world in the field of cancer medicine. This initiative is developed in collaboration with National Cancer Institute (NCI - www. nci.edu.eg), Cairo University and the Arab Medical Association Against Cancer (AMAAC - www.amaac.info).
EASO is an independent international cultural body, which operates free from any commercial influence. Its headquarters and operating centers are in Milan and Cairo (National Cancer Institute).

THE EURO-ARAB SCHOOL OF ONCOLOGY
Mission:
EASO seeks to help ensure that expertise and the most up-to-date knowledge in the field of cancer prevention and cure is rapidly spread out throughout the Arab World, by developing a web of scientific relationships and collaborations between cancer specialists in European and Arab countries.
Countries and communities vary in the prevalence of different cancers, and in their culture and their economic conditions. EASO seeks to tune its activities to the specific characteristics and priorities of each of the countries involved.
Objectives:
• Foster a process of cross-fertilization between the Arab and the European medical knowledge in the cancer field • Encourage networking among the Arab countries and original research in cancer medicine, more tailored to the local reality
• Expose European oncologists to new clinical situations and research issues.

n ESO EducationESO has started to develop dedicated educational programmes in the Balkans since 1999, right after dramatic events that have lacerated the region; the main orientation of the programme is to boost education on multidisciplinary cancer care approach and to support young oncologists training in the region.
In May 2011 ESO organised the first Balkan Masterclass in Clinical Oncology in Dubrovnik (Croatia). This clinically oriented residential educational programme is aimed at young oncologists wishing to improve their skills in the management of cancer patients.
The ESO-ESMO Eastern Europe and Balkan Region Masterclass in Medical Oncology that will be held in Kranj, Slovenia in 2014 (see also page 19), has been designed for medical and clinical oncologists, who wish to improve their skills or those who are preparing for the national or ESMO board exam.
Furthermore a Visiting Professorship programme that was launched in October 2012 will develop further in 2014. This program enables very efficient transfer of knowledge between recognized opinion leaders in the specific field of oncology and local experts and young oncologists. The two days visiting professorship includes lectures and seminars prepared by the visiting professor as well as local experts and clinical case discussions at a local staff meeting and tumor board.

The Eurasia Programme (former Caspian Region Programme launched in 2008) represents a challenging initiative from ESO that aims to create a specific program for countries of Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine and Belorussia), South Caucasus region (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), Kazakhstan, and Turkey. In these areas particular care will be given to the selection of priorities that correspond to the specific need of each of the countries and of the societies involved.
The main aim is to focus and to organise teaching educational courses on cancer types which is considered a priority issue for the population of each country, and to try to gather participants from all these countries in order to get the attention of a variety of medical communities including specialised doctors, nurses, as well as hospital managers and administrators. An investment in organising educational activities that takes into consideration epidemiology, prevention, early detection and treatment can strongly reduce mortality in cancer and cancer related diseases.
The Eurasia Programme intends to be a centre of diffusion for the expertise and latest knowledge in the field of cancer prevention and cure throughout the Eurasian countries, developing a web of scientific relationships and collaborations between cancer specialists in Europe and Asian countries.
On 16-18 May ESO will organise the first Eurasia Masterclass in Clinical Oncology in Moscow, Russia (see also page 14). This clinically oriented residential educational programme is aimed at young oncologists wishing to improve their skills in the management of cancer patients. The programme exposes participants to a full spectrum of issues in multidisciplinary cancer care and to practice-orientated training, and focuses on the most common malignancies.
The Masterclass offers plenary lectures on state-of-the-art clinical evaluation and treatments which refer to clinical guidelines and conclude take-home messages. Practical training is offered in the framework of clinical cases prepared and presented by participants for an interactive discussion with the tumor board. All participants reside onsite at the Masterclass venue and participation is compulsory throughout the event. The Masterclass is conducted entirely in English and fluency in English is necessary for admission.
