Q1.Read the passage given below and answer the following questions: (20 marks)
One dollar and eighty-seven cents. Della counted the contents of her piggy-bank three times- one crumpled dollar and eighty- seven cents. And the next day would be
Christmas!
There was clearly nothing to do but flop down on the shabby little couch and howl. So Della did it.
Della and her husband Jim managed to live on a very low income. Though they were always short of money, they were never short of love.
As she finished crying, she stood by the window.
Then she looked at herself in the mirror. Suddenly her sharp two eyes were bright with excitement. She unpinned her hair. It cascaded to its full length.
Now both Jim and Della had lovely two possessions they valued. Jim had one gold watch that had been his father’s and grandfather’s. Della was quite proud of her long golden hair.
She walked out of the door and stopped at one tiny shop. She ran up the flight of stairs and stood before the lady in charge.
Name:___________________________________________________ Roll No. : _______
“Will you buy my hair?” Della asked. “Let’s have a look at it,” said the lady. Down rippled the golden cascade.
“Twenty dollars,” said the lady, feeling the beautiful hair. “Give it to me, quickly,” said Della.
She spent the next two busy hours in ransacking the shop for Jim’s gift.
She found it at last. It had been made for Jim! It was a platinum fob chain. It cost her twenty-one dollars. Clutching the watch chain and the eighty-seven cents, she hurried home. Jim need not be ashamed of the leather strap.
In the evening Jim came back home. He looked thin and overburdened. He was twenty-two – too young to be burdened with a family. His overcoat was worn out and he had no gloves.
Suddenly Jim stopped short inside the door. He had a strange expression on his face. It terrified Della.
Jim awoke from his trance. He hugged Della.
Jim then took out one brown package from his pocket, and put it on the table.
Della tore the package then she screamed with joy. Quickly her joy changed to wails. There lay the combs – the set of combs Della had always dreamed of buying for her hair. Then Della gave her gift to Jim.
“Isn’t it lovely, Jim? Now give me your watch,” she said eagerly. Jim merely smiled. “Della,” said Jim, “let’s put the wonderful two presents away. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now, could I have one steaming cup of coffee, please?”
