Effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge and attitude regarding hepatitis among patients attending out patient department of gastroenterology at a selected hospital, Salem

Viral hepatitis is a cause for major health care burden in India and is now equated as a threat comparable to the “ big three ” communicable diseases – HIV/AIDS, Malaria and tuberculosis. Hepatitis A virus and Hepatitis E virus are predominantly enterically transmitted pathogens and are responsible to cause both sporadic infections and epidemics of acute viral hepatitis. Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus are predominantly spread via parenteral route and are notorious to cause chronic hepatitis which can lead to grave complications including cirrhosis of liver and hepatocellular carcinoma. Around 400 million people all over the world suffer from chronic hepatitis and the Asia – Pacific region constitutes the epicenter of this epidemic. However, in recent times there has been a sero – epidemiological shift in HAV infection in India, with increasing incidence of infection being noted in the adults and adolescent ’ s populations compared with children. It has been estimated a prevalence of HBV infection to be 3.07% in non-tribal population when compared to 11.85% in tribal population. The estimated prevalence of HCV infection in India is about 1 – 1.9%. (SandeepSatsangi and Yogesh K. Chawla, 2016)

The study findings revealed that the overall mean post-test score is 72.07% which is significantly higher than the pre-test score 45%. Paired’t’ test of the study sample was found to be significant at 0.05 level(t=-10.466). therefore the findings revealed that the structured teaching programme on prevention of neonatal infections was an effective teaching strategy to improve the knowledge of staff nurses. Similar findings was seen in the study done by Nissi Elizabeth(2009) [12] which showed that the structured teaching programme was the best teaching method as it enhances the knowledge of staff nurses on prevention of neonatal infections.

A Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme regarding prevention of Selected Complications among immobilized orthopaedic patients in Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai

Lengthy periods of immobilization are emotionally stressful for patients. Immobility related problems include pressure ulcers, pneumonia, constipation, loss of appetite, urinary stasis, urinary track infections and venous stasis or deep vein thrombosis. When the complications due to immobilization are prevented it helps an individual to be physically, emotionally and psychologically sound. These complications can be prevented through simple basic patient care like skincare, active-passive exercises, changing position and deep breathing exercises. Nurses have a key role in prevention of these complications by educating the patients. Hence the study was conducted “To evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding prevention of selected complications among immobilized orthopeadic patients in Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge and attitude regarding life style modification among clients with type-2 diabetes mellitus attending diabetology outpatient department at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Chennai

This study was also supported by SHRESTHA(2010) where he assessed the lifestyle changes on prevention of the risk for developing diabetic complications. Randomized intervention studies have shown that changes in diet and physical activity can protect against diabetes complications. Effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention programme on glucose tolerance in Dutch subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was undertaken. A total of 102 subjects were selected andrandomized into two groups. Subjects in the intervention group received regular dietary advice and were stimulated to lose weight and to increase their physical activity. The control group received only brief information about the beneficial effects of a healthy diet and increased physical activity. Body weight loss after 1year was higher in the intervention group. The 2h blood glucose concentration decreased 0.8 ± 0.3 mmol/l in the intervention group and increased 0.2 ± 0.3 mmol/lin the control group (P<0.05). Body weight loss and increased physical fitness were the most important determinants of improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Study suggested that lifestyle intervention programme according to general recommendations is effective and induces beneficial changes in lifestyle, which improve glucose tolerance in subjects with IGT. Body weight loss and increased physical fitness were the most important determinants of improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity.

Kirti iyengar, Sharad D Iyengar (2004), Breast problems include engorgement, sore or cracked nipples, mastitis and breast abscess. In UK 33% of women experienced breast problems in first 2 weeks of postpartum, and 28% in the weeks thereafter. Studies from developed countries (USA, UK &Australia) show that the reported incidence of mastitis varies from a few to 33% of lacting women, but it is usually under 10%. Estimates of incidence of breast abscess from developed countries show that the incidence varies between 0.04% and 8.9%. Among women from mastitis, 4.6% to 11% develop breast abscess. Most of these studies were hospital based. These problems have been cited as reasons for stopping breastfeeding. In India, 23% reported problems, and in Bangladesh nearly 50% reported symptoms 6 weeks after delivery, while in England 47% reported at least one symptom. A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Planned Teaching Programme Regarding Prevention of Cervical Cancer in Terms of Knowledge and Attitude among Women of Reproductive Age Group in Selected Rural Community of Delhi

Results: Percentage of women having adequate knowledge increased from 0% to 63.34% after giving planned teaching program. Whereas 18.33% population reported inadequate Knowledge Post test and 18.33% population have moderate knowledge post test. Post test knowledge score improved 38.46% after planned teaching program. T-ratio was statistically significant as the obtained value (32.11) is higher than the tabulated value (2.00) required for t-ratio to be significant at .05 level of confidence. Maximum of the participants got benefitted from the planned teaching programme on changing their attitude towards prevention of cervical cancer. There was a significant difference between pre test and post test knowledge and attitude regarding prevention of cervical cancer and between post test knowledge and post test attitude regarding prevention of cervical cancer among women of reproductive age group. Thus hypothesis 1 & 2 were accepted. Chi-square values of post test knowledge score with demographic variables were age 11.09 which was significant whereas chi- square values with other variables like educational qualification (4.2); occupation (1.4); income group (3.1); marital status (0.9) and number of children (7.3) were not significant. This indicates that H3 is partially accepted with age only. Chi-square values of post test attitude score with demographic variables age (4.86) educational qualification (6.3); occupation (4.6); income group (1.5); marital status (1.7) and number of children (4.4) were not significant. This indicates that H4 is rejected and null hypothesis is accepted.

A study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding knowledge on exclusive breast feeding among primi mothers attending Outpatient Department in Sudha Hospital, at Erode

frameworks. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of exclusive breastfeeding after controlling for background variables. The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in the last 24 hours preceding the survey was 71.3%. The median duration of exclusive breastfeeding was three months and mean frequency of breastfeeding was six times per day. Being unemployed [AOR: 10.4 (95% CI: 1.51, 71.50)] and age of infants of less than two months [AOR: 5.6 (95% CI: 2.28, 13.60)] were independently associated with exclusive breastfeeding. The study concluded that a large proportion of infants are not exclusively breastfed during the first 6 months, despite what is recommended in the national and global infant and young child feeding (IYCF) guidelines. Employed mothers were less likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding, implying the need for promoting workplace breastfeeding practices and creating an enabling environment for exclusive breastfeeding. Extensions of maternity leave up to the first six month of child's age to achieve optimal level of exclusive breastfeeding practices should also be looked into as an alternative solution among mothers.
